What does SLBOE mean? November 9, 2006 12:39 PM   Subscribe

Well, if Matt hadn't closed the thread, I wouldn't have to post this one to ask: What does SLBOE mean? I checked the FAQ, Google, and Acronym Finder.

Yes exactly. That's not too much to ask, is it? It's bad enough linking real journalists and analysts opinions...

A FPP that is a single link to an op-ed-ish post on a blog, especially if it's about the same topics we rehash here again and again, is usually a bad post. The reason is an extension of SLOE which is single-link op ed which are also usually lousy. There are all sorts of great single link posts, but political issue type posts often benefit from more links, backstory, explanation or just time and attention on the part of the poster.

The word is the progenitor of the idea in the same way that the egg is the progenitor of the chicken. Which is to say, in a way, but in a way that is also true if you turn it over and look up its butt instead.

Somewhat late; below other entries...

What (if anything specific) does "machines of loving grace" refer to? Google only turns up the band, and a book of poetry.
posted by blenderfish at 1:18 AM on November 10, 2006

It's from a poem from Richard Brautigan.

Scan of the poem here.

Richard Brautigan is loosely affiliated with The Diggers in San Francisco (whom you may have heard about via Berkely Free Park and other such stuff from the era.)

The poem specifically refers to (specifically) personal or hands-on computing. It's an embodiment of the Hacker Ethic; Tools now, please!

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace was published many times. My first exposure to it was in Steve Levy's Hackers: Hereos of the Computer Revolution.

It's a rather odd - if easily identifiable - source of inspiration for the personal microcomputer revolution. That tiny little poem probably did more to put computers in each of our hands than Wozniak, Jobs and Gates - combined.

(I see by your profile you list "game programmer" as occupation. READ HACKERS! You'll love it. Gaming runs through the whole book as a thread, and even as a major section for the post-Apple heyday of startup gaming, Sierra in particular. Gaming is basically what lit the fire under personal, hands on computing. And people wonder why I'm always harping on about play leading to innovation.)

patricio - no shit. I didn't ask where it appeared, I asked what the relationship between the anagram and the poem was. Hmmm... actually I said "connection", but I meant relationship.

So - when OP said "hey I saw you said 'SLBOE', I'm commenting by saying 'Machines of Loving Grace' ", what point was he making? What is the relationship between those two things?
