Adam Savage (asavage) answered an question about a Mythbusters episode in AskMe! December 13, 2006 2:17 PM   Subscribe

Well, that's about as canonical an answer as you're likely to get for that question, eh?

Ummmm, yes, yes it is... why do you ask?

I heart Metafilter. It's what makes the internet so rock.

Ask and ye shall receive. I thought we already knew that party frequented askme?
posted by lilithim at 2:37 PM on December 13, 2006

Yeah, but usually he answers typical tech questions. I have to admit that's pretty impressive to have someone from a show answer a question about a show on a random website like this.

Adam, how come you and Jamie never got aroung to the pink sweater from the hitchhiking girl? Was Mr. Johnson's apple tree really cursed? And what's the deal with Old Hookhand?

Adam Savage is so cool he can even bust myths while dead.

And juanmc can stand alongside our other babelfishy members:

and, of course,

Yeah, pretty neat. Thanks for posting the MeTa. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

I would have missed this too had it not been MeTa'd. Rather cool, really.

No respect for nerd history anymore.

I wouldn't say it's cooler than an arguably historic person posting in a thread about himself; but it's definitely a lot cooler than those MeTa threads where everybody tries to name celebrities who post on MetaFilter and I don't recognize any of the names because, come to find out, they're just random bloggers.

So - what is the etiquette on this sorta thing?

Is it be ok to direct to a specific MeFi member, if you knew/know they are the perfect person to answer?

I think it would be a little rude myself, but am just curious to see what MeTa has to say.

I agree. Let Derek Jeter eat his meal; if he wants to sign an autograph, he'll come over to your table.

I thought we had established that the proper way to refer to Mr. Savage was "Metafilter's own Adam Savage".
posted by quin at 4:51 PM on December 13, 2006

What? We're just gonna let him slide on signing his post?

It seems a little self-linky to me. Somehow. Ban the fucker.

Adam Savage showing up to AskMe: very cool.

But you have to admit that Dan Savage answering the sex questions on AskMe would be pretty fucking awesome.

Matt, can I change my username to Σταύρος το κοτόπουλο κατάπληξης?

(Er, presuming it's correct. My Greek's limited to mild insults, celebratory exclamations, and ordering Ouzo, not necessarily in that order.)
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 9:50 PM on December 13, 2006

Also, Dave Gorman. Kinda hit and run, though (unlike Adam, who has hit and stuck, which is cool), so I don't think we can call him 'Metafilter's own' quite yet.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 9:54 PM on December 13, 2006

I've nothing to contribute but fanboy nonsense. I only recently learned of asavage's Metaparticipation - right around the time I became a dedicated Mythbusters viewer. Too awesome to share a board with someone who's work you admire.

The other difference between Adam Savage and Dave Gorman is that Dave came here in reference to a link in the blue to project of his own. He came with the specific intent to discuss it. Adam, on the other hand, from his posting history, appears to be a truly organic Mefite. And I mean that figuratively more than literally: he started using Metafilter because it's cool. He posted answers about the Landmark Forum and karaoke before he posted questions about his digital camera or Val Kilmer or commented on solar death rays. Let alone discussions about his show.

Adam's a Mefite who happens to have a television show. Dave's a comedian who happened to swing by Mefi once.

Yeah, like I said, hit and run.

I just had to chime in to thank smackfu for posting that link that I had missed. Not only useful information, but I can't wait to go to the beach with some canned soda and gasoline next summer.

presuming it's correct

Well, literally it means 'Stavros the chicken of amazement/astonishment/stupefaction'; myself, I think I would have gone with a more classical Σταύρος το θαυμασιορνίθιον or δεινορνίθιον (or, of course, Σταύροςτοθαυμασιορνίθιον or Σταύροςτοδεινορνίθιον), where θαυμασιο- is 'wonderful' as in 'wonder-working' and δεινο- is more 'awesome, terrible' (as in Ivan the Terrible), the latter being the dino- in dinosaur, which might appeal to you: stavrosthedinornithion. (Ornithio(n) is the katharevousa, or classicizing, equivalent of the demotic kotopoulo.) But it's all good.

From what I hear, there's a MeFite who works on the THOMAS website who often answers legislation-related questions. Tends to self-link a bit much, though.

Matt, Because this thread exists, you just closed this post down on The Deej, but I'm pretty sure he was talking about this answer, not this one.

Just FYI.

[Though I don't necessarly think we need two MeFi's Own Adam Savage threads...]

Yeah, I didn't see any link to the LifeHacker page? Did I miss it? Thanks, quin. Toldya you are my new best friend. :)

[At least not at the same time]

Is it against ettiquette to post a call-out of Matt? Maybe he would flame out! Wow that's be something!

Errrrr... just kidding. Don't want to waste $5.
posted by The Deej at 5:59 PM on December 16, 2006

What are you two talking about? It's another MeTa post about one MetaFilter user in less than a week's time. Give the guy a bit of a break, eh?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 7:04 PM on December 16, 2006

No no no... the point is not that it's about Adam. The point is it is "MetaFilter Related" where AskMe gets a nice mention in another popular website. I am no Adam-worshipper. I only worship MetFilter.

But... it's your call. That's why you get the big bucks. :)
posted by The Deej at 7:13 PM on December 16, 2006

What you may not have noticed is that lifehacker constantly links to AskMe. They do an "Ask MetaFilter Roundup" that cherry-picks the most interesting questions.
posted by smackfu at 7:41 PM on December 16, 2006

I'm on the fence about whether I am glad that at least the post is still up, even tho comments are kicked here, or whether I would prefer to have it deleted with a trademark funny/snarky deletion reason.
