Of course, on this particular day, they might have their attention elsewhere.

No can do. I get this:
D'oh!

According to our records, there's a problem. It is one of either two things:

* You've posted something here in the past four days. There is a limit of one new MetaTalk post per four days, which you've used up. Make them count, because you'll only get one every 4 days.
* You're new here. You have to be a member of MetaFilter for a week before you can post anything to MetaTalk.
I have officially flunked the internet.

DNAB, I'm fairly new here, but I think the flameout etiquette also includes saying that you're leaving at least three times in quick succession while coming back every time with responses to show you're still following the thread. Then, we all get to have marshmallows, popcorn, smores or more eggnog. And torches. Somebody has to bring torches. (And then there's being banned. I wouldn't want you to be really banned, of course.)

There hasn't been a good flameout since a long time before I joined, so what do I know really.
posted by lilywing13 at 8:12 PM on December 25, 2006

Bravo dnab. I was going to take a stab at the faux flame-out, but there is no way I can top that. The lack of punctuation and random capitalizations really sells it.

Though I gotta admit, I'm digging on lilywing13's idea of repeatedly quitting us and continued returning to further dig your hole.

Excellent work all around, I'd say.

As someone who spent $5 to join, I question the sincerity and dedication of anyone who joined for free. WTF? At least the modest fee acts as a barrier of sorts to keep out the freeloading riff-raff--those of us who were/are willing to pony up a Lincoln quite obviously are willing to put our money where our mouth is. That there are over 17,000 people for who that isn't true is, frankly, saddening and robs me of what little holiday joie de vivre I was enjoying.

The pre-17,578? Not only are their user numbers old and tired, they're so set in their freeloading ways that any appearance by one of them in a thread is an embarrassment to the newer, livelier members who have joined since--a group I'm proud to be a member of.

Now that I know the freeloader constant (17,578) I can filter future threads for relevance. Thank you.
