Whatever happened to this?
Based partially on Matt's "best of the threads" idea from recently and my own slavering addiction to all things ziney... Basically, everyone seems to agree that there are some great threads, and some great pieces of writing here, and we all see some of them and we all miss some.
Right now the SideBlog helps, and it's still possible to find everything, but we need a definite system so that we don't miss this stuff.
There are a few options -
1) Moderation base -- You can't see how comments are modded, but you can mod, and only Matt (or some sort of cult) can see what the most people think is good.
2)Submission page -- Again, Matt or an elite gets the opportunity to peruse the submissions (could take awhile..).
And all those options I've intentionally left out to encourge discussion.

Ack! Matt's response comes swiftly. (It's looking more and more to me like for extensive pseudo-moderation there needs to be some sort of elect group....)

Hey j.edwards - that would make an interesting discussion all of itself. You know, when you're drafting this really long and well-thought out pile of junk, prettifying an adverb here, a semi-colon there; and finally hit the "post" button to discover someone has posted exactly the same comment one measly minute before; only pithier, more concise and much, much more to the point.
The only defense is the old "more inside", though some bastards enjoy jumping even that gun, grrr. (I particularly loathe that time-traveller guy who's posted the same gag to all future threads till 2029). Personally I'd go for "More inside for bandwidth-saving purposes; please fucking wait for me to make a fool of myself all on my own". :-)
I remember the MetaFocus idea, btw! It looks even better today. And difficult, given the enormous difference between the two media. Live and printed page are uneasy partners. I'm going back to re-read the thread to find out who exactly said these very same things before...

just as an fyi, I don't have any problem with people running with the things I propose. If a bunch of metafilter people got together to starting writing stuff, I'd point to it and give it the mefi stamp of approval.

I still support the idea. I just read through the older thread, and the crap I said before still stands. I won't regurgitate myself here. You're welcome. =)
I understand and empathize about the unemployment thing, dealing with it myself. Whether Matt's ever able to spearhead it himself or a group of devotees wanna take a crack at it, I'd be willing to participate, but doing whatever will pay my bills does have to come first before playtime.

About the "more inside" issue, where people jump the gun on you, I've found one possible way to resolve that. Recently when I know ahead of time I'm gonna have to put more inside to keep the "teaser" short, I compose and edit it in notepad before I save the teaser. Then when I'm ready, I save the originating link post and then copypaste the "more" as fast as I can. Doesn't keep it from happening, but it cuts on the time someone has to sneak in under the yellow ribbon before it gets cut.

Heh. Yeah, I had the stuff composed in Notepad (having thought to myself when I had seen it happen before, "That won't be me") but my faithful Windows ME chose that moment to freeze up... It's a darn shame. Anyhow, like owillis and Matt said, something could be done, if we could get the verve together and do it -- although I'm not sure I'd be the man for that job (my qualifications are a little lacking). But we should still see what we can pull off -- there are a lot of smart and capable people here et cetera et cetera.

Actually now that I think of it, Stavros, my input here in MetaFilter was exacerbated by my having worked at my previous job. I used to go in here all the time when things were slow at work. Some other employees would explore IRC chat servers, and download mpeg movies or porn images, but I preferred textbased stuff like this. Less risky. Less of a chance of getting in trouble.
For all I know that could have been a factor in why they let me go. I wasn't as productive as some and didn't take advantage of free time to kiss butt and create busy work for myself while on the clock. But they were just looking for reasons to let people go so they wouldn't have to officially lay us off and pay us compensatory packages. *shrug* but I'm not bitter. =)

Oh well -- doesn't look like it's going anywhere. Once I've got the space and time (or the Calabi-Yau manifold, whichever comes first) to try and start something up... But that won't be for awhile.
