Do we really need a new thread every time a new Star Wars trailer comes out?

What I want is an animated gif of Darth Vader saying D'oh! for each such post.

I hope not.

Everyone who posts a Star Wars link gets a free Ewok.

Or a free Jar Jar Binks tongue sucker.

Jesus mkn, as a poster of one of the offending SW posts, I take offense (lightly) that you would take offense.

A) How many trailers could there possibly be - maybe 5 at most.

B) A lot of people seem to like SW, and are excited about such things - and the threads generate a fair amount of discussion

C) What on God's green earth is wrong with such posts - other than being related to something you are unintersted in?

Yes we do need a new thread every time a new trailer comes out. *Especially* when it involves great bodily harm to Jar Jar.

I still don't understand what the problem is.. Seems like if you don't like the post, you just wouldn't click it, and the only harm done to you would be the extra .5kB of page size you have to download.

Part of the charm of MetaFilter is using MetaTalk to kill disturbing new trends. There was an ugly period on MetaFilter when every new episode of Survivor was getting its own post. I'd put the Star Wars trailers in the same category -- let Slashdot be the site that hangs on every word from George Lucas with adolescent adoration.

Point taken rcade, but I think it's the democracy of the masses (and/or Matt) that gets to decide whether rabid Star Wars fans postings are a "disturbing new trend" or not. (I think it's funny as well to be put in a position of defending feeling good about a piece of entertainment)

It just seems like a measure of degrees here - if it were on the level of every new episode of Survivor, yeah that would be overboard, but 3 SW trailer posts is barely a trend, not really overboard IMHO.

Also, I agree - it is great to have MetaTalk to clarify things and put across arguments/defenses.

:o( though a lot of people won't like it when someone posts it, i'm waiting for the harry potter thread.. i mean, really. did anyone see the monsteres inc. psuedo-trailer?

Ah man! I missed my only MeTa thread (at least in memory).

Damn. I always miss the fun stuff.

(I still want my Yoda doll, though)

As for Episode II trailers becoming some sort of meme. I don't see why they would: the first trailer was linkable because it's STAR WARS, and it was the first... not to mention how bad it was -- which is reason enough to post just for the belly-aching that would ensue; the second trailer... well, I can't defend posting the second trailer. It was almost as vapid as the first... so there was nothing particularly linkable about it; the third (and I'm biased, of course) was linkable because it was the _first_ trailer with any meat to it.

Now if someone posts a link to the fourth -- unless it has some explicit JarJar death imagery -- then we'll have something to complain about.

As long as it's something new... and of interest to the MeFi masses, why not post it. I mean, it's not the high link-art of an SDB post. But it's not exactly flame bait either.
