Regardles of the merits of the FPP, shouldn't a new user go ahead and sign up, post a few comments, get a feel for the place, and earn the right to post to FP?

Sorry, wrong category. Dammit!

Not really, the (former) front page post was about web bugs.

Wait, the post was deleted at 7:30am PST. What is Matt doing up this early? Or are there other mods?
posted by remlapm at 7:28 AM on January 21, 2002

why the post got deleted:

- the link described web bugs on "porno" sites, but the destination URL was a general page describing what web bugs were, having nothing to say about porn sites.

- several sentences explaining the past week of metafilter and her situation wasn't what I want to see on posts. Why didn't the person with the account edit/rewrite it to fit in with metafilter (since they are more experienced with the site)?

No, Matt, I was just wondering why you were up so early when everyone has the day off ( except me obviously ). Deleting the post made perfect sense. Just curious.

Wait, nevermind, that's none of my business. I just thought there might be another Eastern time zone mod.

Matt, get back to writing... : )

We need metametatalk so I can be taken to task for cluttering the front page. I promise to have my coffee before posting from now on.

The problem I had was the fact that she used her husband's id rather than getting her own, but that thread was doomed from the getgo for the reasons Matt pointed out.

...shouldn't a new user go ahead and sign up, post a few comments...

This is kind of besides the point, but new user sign up is currently closed. There also seems to be quite a bit of account sharing between husbands/wives/friends/pets/neightbors/etc, which I have no problem with (currently, anyway), but I could see it becoming an issue shortly....

In fact I think posting under someone else's id should get your butt kickd....but i am surprised my husband hasn't tried it before now....not that I would approve AT ALL.....

Didn't know new signups were closed. Damn, I'm out of touch. No, wait. My wife posted that! Yeah...

Now you can blame that double post on your spouse/children instead!

I can see it now -- a flamewar, seemingly between bunnyfire and herself, but, unbeknownst to others, in fact between herself and hubby....

(just to willfully misinterpret, y'know.)

*this is Mrs. twf again*

Sorry, didn't realise it would get everyone's panties in a bunch for me to use my husband's account, but as skwm pointed out, new signups are closed and have been for some time, from what was explained t me. My husband doesn't edit my posts because he's my HUSBAND, not my editor, but if it's such a horriffic sin, no problem, it'll never happen again. However, if one had read the entire site, one might have spotted the line referring to porn sites specifically, although the entire was rather generalistic. Sorry, there's no way to link to specific lines in a sites, that I know of. However, you may now return to your regularly scheduled MeFi. I got nuthin' more to say.

Everyone? So far, only bunnyfire has said anything against it, and she hardly counts as 'everyone'.

I only mentioned it because he has posted a couple times in the past, and would have a good idea of what posts typically look like.

one might have spotted the line referring to porn sites specifically, although the entire was rather generalistic.

If the entire point of a post is to point out a very specific way a hack is being exploited and how it may be used against users, I would expect the page linked to fully describe it, not be one line in a general page. People expect to see supporting evidence for a claim, especially if the original post is stating an opinion one way or the other.

If you look around at similar posts, often people will comment with things like "but username, how can that be, the page you linked to doesn't support that."

If you had found a better source site explaining the use of web bugs in this specific way, I probably would have left the link up and removed all the childish banter on the comments.

Matt, that sounds so English!

I keep imagining our more American and less charitable posters, at their pre-caffeinated worst, reacting to some linkless post in the same 1930's drawing-room comedy way:

"Oh but Username, how can that be, pray tell? I'm terribly sorry but the page you linked to simply doesn't support that, old fruit."

"hey username, you dumb fuck! Are you allergic to links or were you just born that way?" would be more like it. ;)

fallen pillars, broken aqueducts, large parts of South Med crushed, sown with salt

by the way - our baby was born 10:18 eastern time 01-22-02

7.5lbs, female, and beautiful

Congrats to you both! I sent you an e-mail the other day, btw, to offer mrs. twf the use of a user-id I created a few months back as a goof (only used in 1 MeTa thread, so no embarrassing history). Given the circumstances, the name is pretty appropriate, though Matt might be able to change the name for you if you ask. E-mail for the password if you want it. Just to set the record straight, I wouldn't have had a problem with her using your account if I had known new signups were closed.
