Hey Matt, how much did you pay for that plug on the Ben Brown Show? "It makes me smarter, and more angry about THINGS."

Does this mean I'll look like this if I read too much MeFi?

"It makes me smarter, and more angry about THINGS."
I think that line should be on the new MeFi tee :)

hey, that was pretty cool. maybe I don't really hate ben brown after all.

Oy. That was painful.

I long for the days when that level of talent and energy was relegated to 10 year-old kids with a Panasonic cassette tape recorder and Partridge Family music playing in the background. And no, I'm not going to let you hear that.

Yeah. Damn that guy for producing something at his own expense, and providing it to you for free, in the hope that you may find it amusing. It's much more useful to sit in the back of the class and throw spitballs at the people who actually attempt something creative.

Odd Opyamystic.. perhaps

Maybe Assfleck should have hired William Goldman to "polish" (read: ghostwrite) his presentation speech, much in the same way that Goldman "polished" the Good Will Hunting script.

only people you like who "attempt something creative" are exempt from your rules? Apparently you can critique whatever you want, but others can't.

Yes you do. Trust me.

I love Ben Brown.

No really. I do.

So, because he did that by himself he's immunized from criticism? Sorry. He's an adult. The segment is artistically lame; something impressive for a 10, maybe 12 year-old. Above all, it's an insult to Metafilter.

Jeez, it's just a guy goofing around with a camera and an ibook, he's not putting a friggin' gun to your head or asking for $8 admission to see it. His cooking episode (ep 6 or 7) was pretty funny.

If you didn't like it, fine, I think people are wondering why you're being hard on him, it just seems like a pointless attack on someone that isn't hurting or bothering you.

Ben Affleck = Rich guy who charges people to bear witness to his "talent".

Ben Brown = Non-rich guy who provides his product for free. Also, though I have no proof, I do not believe that Mr. Brown has enlisted the ghostwriting talents of William Goldman to polish his daily internet show. If he has, God help us all.

Ben Brown doesn't have capped teeth either. That's something.

Well, it was brought to my attention, and that was my gut reaction. He put it on the Web for people to see, and I saw it. He's not a morally bad person; I just found it bad, even on its own terms, especially since I've seen similar feeling things; and made some--in 1970. And I haven't watched his other episodes. At least not yet. But if I do and like them, I will be sure to say so.

I was sure his head was going to explode... As always, we're left wanting more. It's called star power, baby!

Funny, PP, I feel the same way about most of your posts here.

Or I probably would if I noticed them more often, I guess.

That was mean. Sorry. But you deserved it, you bad man.

starvos: you may be right on some level, except that what works in text needs a lot more to work as a multi-minute video with sound . And the video wouldn't be so painful, and might even be funny if it was 15 seconds instead of two minutes. And if it had no sound, it might have even been funny at its full length.

Then again, I'm not sure the piece was any more painful than most of the shows on television (which I don't watch because they seem so horrible from their promos).

Hey... Ben Brown is cool. He's created more than his share of good stuff, and just keeps sharing. Can't blame him for wanting to be unemployed, either. It sucks to dedicate yourself personally to something you care about, only to have it die on you. Been there... it sucks. He needs to find his path, and if that involves writing, web design, and quirky little home movies, then great! It makes more sense than you might think.

Living proof that it's what you do while unemployed that makes all the difference. ;->
