consensus on multiple-topic posts? January 28, 2002 1:31 PM   Subscribe

Do we have a general consensus on multiple-topic posts? While there is a relation in that Beast was mentioned in the Casciano essay, I really wonder if one or the other should have have been linked, as the space for discussion ends up too open.

While the order of discovery was probably the reverse, as far as I can tell, the post was about Beast and whether there were other such publications, with an incidental comment that the essay mentioned it was happening more and more. Instead, the comments have latched onto the essay and content v. presentation, etc.
I almost thought at first that this was an attempt to sneak two posts in one day, since I'd already been to Beast, and Casciano has his visited links set to display at the same color as regular text(I was scanning).
I don't think this calls for the "letting a conversation wander naturally" statement that seems to be the standard when someone asks about topic drift, but frankly, I just woke up and am not feeling to erudite right now, so would anyone care to add their thoughts?

Not trying to defeat the 1 post a day rule. I don't post enough links to worry about that.

In fact, I'd seen the essay linked on a bunch of different design sites and didn't think it met the not everyone has seen it criteria. I didn't anticipate that people would want to take issue with the premise of the editorial, or if they did, then I assumed it would be along the lines of well this use of CSS is cool (hence the first comment I added). I really just linked it as support for the idea that PDF zines are a growing trend.

Not very many people have come forward with other PDF zines, so perhaps the trend was overstated or the group they're big with is not the group that frequents MeFi. Too bad, it seems like an interesting idea.

Sorry about that. I swear I'd copied the post address over. Odd. Anyway, I'm awake now. My point was that instead of the art/visual design discussion I thought this was supposed to be, people are discussing Actionscript and the source code of jodi.org, for example, and I mainly see it as a result of a less-than-optimal post and follow-up comment from Willnot.
Was the FPP about the essay or Beast? Besides a link from one to the second, they have near nothing to do with each other, and the discussion has sort of ended up on a third topic altogether.

(steps out of lurk mode)

It looked to me like it it was supposed to be about Beast. While I'd love to be part of yet another discussion of my article I attempted to be brief with my reply and perhaps address everything people had mentioned in hopes to finish that part of the thread off. Hope in the long run it won't derail the thread more.
