I don't want to post as my spouse March 2, 2002 11:21 PM   Subscribe

Hi! I'm MiguelCardoso's wife. My name is Maria João. I use the same computer as my husband does and have just registered under the name Schweppes Girl; using a well-known roundabout way. My username shows up fine on MetaFilter but, when I came to MetaTalk to comment, I find my username is automatically - and annoyingly - changed to MiguelCardoso.

Although I agree with what he says most of the time, I'd like, as do Catch/Holloway and the Acheson couple, to make comments of my own. Why is this? Or should I just order Miguel( ;) to take dictation?
I should add that I don't really mind; but I read MetaFilter and MetaTalk regularly and feel that women are severely under-represented. Does this mean I can be myself on MetaFilter(Schweppes Girl shows up as my login)but must bow to my husband on the perhaps more important MetaTalk? I guess it's just a bug. Am I right? Could it be fixed?

in the interim, i would say dictation.

Miguel, you've been hacked.

No, no, no! I just made a first stupid test-comment on MetaFilter - what a waste of an initiation! - just to show how my username is mine there; but is my husband's here on MetaTalk. Talk about multiple personalities. We are very close but this is ridiculous. ;)

I think you need to logout and log back in MetaTalk and MetaFilter. if Miguel and you use the same PC.

Riffola: It doesn't work. There's definitely a glitch. Mathowie: you should thank me for depriving you of him!

Thanks, Stavros! It worked! Note my signature. Cool or what? Did anyone say Tonic Water? Miguel told me you were impeccable. Like Matt! And he was right. Now my only fear is - when he wakes up -will he find he's turned into...oh my God... into his wife? Talk about Bunnyfire! This is much worse!

Hmm I got this error when I clicked logout
An error occurred while evaluating the expression:

That's when I logout and reload MetaTalk's frontpage.
Here's the rest of the error message.

You get the drift. Just thought I'd check in and say hello.

I'm happy now. MetaFilter and MetaTalk no longer seem as restrictive as I thought. ;)

hey there -- I've had to change user names in MeTa occasionally and basically you just have to logout twice [yes, twice] the second time you get the error but then you can login under a new user name. You don't have to delete your cookies every time. You'll get the hang of it, welcome!

An easy way to avoid this in the future would be for each user to use a different browser--and thus separate cookies--when using MeFi. If you have problems, that is.

Oh, and welcome Schweppes Grrl. Your MeFi boot camp beings a 04:30 sharp. :-)

Here's a different kind of suggestion: Use Netscape 6.2. Both of you can set up separate profiles. When opening Netscape, simply select your profile. Then you won't have to worry about logging in and out of individual sites.

Here's what I'm confused about. When will find time to post Scheweppes Grrl? I just imagine that Miguel eats, drinks and sleeps at the computer right here on this very page.

Does this bring husband and wife together (so much to talk about all day long, looking over each others shoulder, shared experiences, late night conversations...I wont go on) or does it pull them apart (disagreements, fights over the one terminal, pilfered links, intellectual jealousy). So curious to hear how it all works out. I can just see it ,after a long hard day pounding away at Metafilter - how about one of these dear?

Voyageman: Apparently, Jacob Schweppe invented carbonated drinks! His tonic water first appeared in 1783. I'd love to have been there on the hot summer's day when Jake looked at his bottle of Gordon's Gin(established 1769)and went "Hmmmm....."

mlang's S.O. here to spell out to Voyageman how it all works. I'm at the computer here and mlang is lying on the bed. I wanted to comment on this thread, saying that I too loved the book Bee Season, by Myla Goldberg. I read my post aloud to him, and he told me that I wouldn't be adding to the discussion with what I said. I then proceeded to this thread, while he was still lying on the bed, pretending to read. As I was getting to your post Voyageman, mlang put his book down and said, "I think that you should post something about Bee Season, just don't go cheerleading."

Evan is my gay American alter ego. I'm his straight European alter ego. So he may be cooler - but I accept that. We're both cute and that's all that matters. Believe me, obiwanwasabi, it's all been very well thought out. ;)

And now for a completely private joke: that piri-piri I'm holding for you is improving no end. Piquant, non?

I want to know if Miguel is really the Portguese Maurice Chevalier.
posted by rodii at 3:37 PM on March 3, 2002

Is he one of the three Europeans who rock? If so, yes. Otherwise, please explain why nobody on MetaFilter, "Reveal Typos" function notwithstanding, can write the word Portuguese without missing a U. Although your spelling is better than the usual Portugese.
posted by MiguelCardoso at 3:45 PM on March 3, 2002

BTW , speaking of rocking (and ancient) Europeans, I have remained amazed how Maurice Chevalier got away with singing Thank Heaven for Little Girls for so long without ever getting into hot water.
posted by Voyageman at 4:03 PM on March 3, 2002

Please, this is my wife's first post, rodii and voyageman, and she's only 34, so please keep it clean.

Besides, there was no such thing as paedophilia back then. Alan Jay Lerner? Gigi? He's God-like. Are you kidding? Have you forgotten, dear Voyageman, that the rationale was "They grow up in the most delightful ways"? Did this not happen too with your legendary Oakland cutie friend? Little girls are like investments. You want to wait till they're at least 28. Before you're quite rightly rejected as a dirty old man you are. ;)

BlueTrain - for the very first(well, second) time, I agree with you entirely.
posted by MiguelCardoso at 4:40 PM on March 3, 2002

Although that song is not, as I remember, sung about Gigi the character per se, I think it's a setup for our introduction to her, and to the ongoing theme of her naivete/precociousness coupled with the hero's cynical sophistication. And although they make her look like jailbait in the beginning, she turns out to (apparently) be old enough to marry, or at least to be a socially acceptable kept woman. So yes, it is a bit creepy when you first hear it, but by the end it's more or less justified. Perhaps you are intended to still be a bit creeped out for most of the movie, as Gigi wrestles with the issue of whether her first relationship is going to be as what is arguably a prostitute.

I picture Miguel more like Anthony Quinn. Of course, he's not Portuguese, but neither is Maurice Chevalier.

Do you actually agree, or do you just enjoy the effects that come with saying that? If you actually agreed, you would stop playing host to this "let's all circle around Miguel/SO and give them a group hug" BS. This thread should've died 20 comments ago, yet here were are, still stroking your ego. You want to agree with me for the first or second time, go away from this thread. Let it die.

BlueTrain, you are an absolute shmuck. The vast majority of your comments are vindictive, counterproductive attacks on the legitimacy of other users' posts and comments. You seem obsessively concerned with regulating the quality of content, yet most of your so-called contributions are themselves worthless trolls. What's it to you if Miguel wants to post a couple more comments to a MetaTalk thread that has spawned at least one interesting discussion and apparently hasn't bothered anybody else? Compared to the amount of space you've wasted, it's nothing.
