Anyone up for a Manhattan MeFi gathering in late April? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?...

Sure I'm up for it. Just gimme some notice so I can arrange my work schedule around it.

Me too. I'm in.

suggestions for venues?

does 8PMish work for people? do we need to do it earlier? later?

Can we talk about trolls, double posts and how much cooler MeFi used to be?

Sounds lovely. I'm game.
posted by FunkyHelix at 10:27 AM on March 30, 2002

Me too! Someone nail down a date and time to work with here. What day of the week should we do. I'm free always, since I'm self employed, so others might be better at suggesting good days/times/dates.

I'm game.

Tell me when and where. I have a metrocard.

And I shall be making my usual phone call!
posted by MiguelCardoso at 12:39 PM on March 30, 2002

I'm in. I suggest Pioneer on the Bowery between Prince and Spring. It's large, cheap, unpretentious, and if it's not a weekend, not very crowded. Walking distance from the F, 6, J and N/R trains. Run by a couple of British blokes. Puts rugby on the large screen sometimes. Good mix of young New Yorkers in attendance of all races, sexualities and incomes.
posted by Mo Nickels at 1:47 PM on March 30, 2002

Oh, yeah: Once we set a date, I'm interested in making this the largest Metafilter get-together ever, anywhere. There's a whole backlog of old-timers who didn't go last time (including myself) that it'd be great to mix-in with all the newcomers. (I mean, how can you have a get-together without Anil Dash? You can't; you can only pretend).

Count me in.
posted by muckster at 1:52 PM on March 30, 2002

I should be able to make it as long as it's not too early. Downtown is preferrable too...

Count me in too.

Mo Nickels- Pioneer sounds good. I've never been, but I trust your description. So I second the motion for Pioneer. Now- A date and time. Weekday or weekend? I vote weekday.
posted by evanizer at 3:26 PM on March 30, 2002

How about Thursday, April 25th? 8PM? (totally arbitrary date and time, but hey, somebody's got be specific....)

While I missed the Brooklyn get-together, one in Manhattan sounds great. And I like the sound of Pioneer. (Also like that it's about three blocks away from my office!)
posted by nstop at 9:31 PM on March 30, 2002

Sure, count me in. But how is there a bar I don't know about on that block?!

We'll miss you, Fes!

lisz: Thurs, Apr 25th, 8 pm. Gotcha. Say where and we'll do our damndest to be there. (We missed the Brooklyn meet 'cause I was sick as a dog and I didn't want to inflict whatever I had on whoever was there.) I will bring cameras.

I'd sure like to go too, though I'm i L.A., just cuz the NY MeFi contingent includes such a high concentration of interesting people. And I'm still riding on the good experience of our gathering here last night. Maybe I'll find a way to swing it somehow.

Is that date definite? Lemme know so I can request my schedule...

I'll sure try to make it if I'm in the country.

Let's cement that date: Thurs, April 25th, 8 pm. All in favor?

I say aye.

Grant tipped me off to this. I should be able to make it (probably with a contingent and traveling orchestra).

Free t-shirts to all attendees who email me and request one (I need to know how many to bring).

Sure, count me in. But how is there a bar I don't know about on that block?!

Heh. Not the first time that question's been asked of me...

Additionally, I just got off the phone with the manager of the Pioneer. They have drink specials on Thursdays, though he didn't know what the specific specials would be yet. I asked for Metafilter group discount beyond that but he seemed hesitant to commit. However, he did take our group name down, so we're in the books. Not a reservation, really, just a notation, so there won't be a surprise when 27 pasty-faced geniuses show up asking for Pimms Cups. I also verified there wasn't some sort of private party there that night that we might be barging into. There isn't.

An indicator of the type of bar: The manager's Irish but there're no fucking shamrocks on the windows.

I would just like to say that, although my strict "super-coolness" policy has prohibited me from attending any but the first MeFi get-together, I may, indeed, try to make an appearance at this one.

No word yet from Jason "Dr. J" Levine yet, though, which is the true test, as he is, of course, The Keeper of the Server.

See yous theres.
posted by anildash at 10:49 PM on March 31, 2002

Wow, do you think the MetaFilter server could come by the bar and have a drink with us? Or, since it's a 'server', perhaps it could help out around the bar. I mean, it already serves coffee with the ease of a seasoned cocktail waitress, so how 'bout Cosmopolitans?

the aaron dickey transportation fund is now accepting donations if you'd like to contribute towards the cost of flying aaron to manhattan.

your small donation could change a life. or something like that. all the proceeds guaranteed; blah blah blah.

total cost is $229. that shouldn't be too hard to raise; after all, it's for aaron.

i think that this is probably the most appropriate place for the following announcement:

joe maller, who we all met and loved at the brooklyn mefi party, has just had a baby! and it's a cute one, too. i wish more people had cute babies instead of ugly ones.

oh, and, i guess that it was actually joe maller's wife, michelle marks, who had the baby, not joe himself. so she gets some credit. but i'm sure it was hard for joe to be in the waiting room smoking cigars with his father-in-law.

in any case:

I just found this thread, after it was mentioned in that one about the LA boy's bash, and you guys already happened to have picked a place around the corner from where I live. So I'll be there - assuming i don't forget. Anyone suitably organizational who's in need of a procrastination project could compile our addresses and send a reminder email that week...

Then again, I can't seem to find my birth certificate and my passport has expired.

but i won't tell, as long as you let me buy you a drink. that's the least i can do, considering that bit of unjustified nastiness from a while back.

Well, *I* won't tell, but it's going to cost you, jonmc. I will expect a near-mint copy of Answer Me! #4 in a mylar jacket as assurance that it's just between the two of us.
posted by cowboy_sally at 7:17 AM on April 3, 2002

Matt never emailed me back about putting the Manhattan party in the sidebar/special events page (does he hate us or is he really busy? I think he mentioned moving, which must be a total bitch. Although he did have time to put together that unsettling kuro5hin hoax, so...), so I will do a mass email to everybody in a week or so to remind them. Is that kosher? And keep yer hands off jonmc, cowboy_sally! He's mine! (that is, if he ever switches teams. And judging by his obsession with boobies, that's not likely. But I'm standing guard anyway!)
posted by evanizer at 10:11 AM on April 3, 2002

Great, Evanizer, on the email reminder. Also, you might want to politely notify any New York bloggers who may not be regular Metafilter readers but who it'd be great to have there.

Well, this thread kind of went stupid. let's get it back on track.

Who thinks that we should migrate the group from Pioneer bar to the RemoteLounge? The RemoteLounge is a revolutionary new bar with 60+ webcams and consoles set up that allows the patrons to check each other out. The monitors on the walls can be programmed to display random weblogs or pictures from the webcams and video cameras.

http://www.remotelounge.com/

There is an upstairs and a downstairs. My old boss is one of the sysadmins and is checking to see if 4/25 is available for a group.

The Pioneer bar and the ReomteLounge are only a few blocks from each other.

Who thinks this is a better idea?
posted by camworld at 8:33 AM on April 5, 2002

I vote NO for the remote lounge. Sounds too hip and complicated. And expensive. We need a low key place.
posted by evanizer at 8:55 AM on April 5, 2002

mr. barrett: i hardly think any thread in which evanizer flirts with me is stupid, but i do think that a move to the remote lounge is a great idea. therefore, i'm going to take the liberty of reposting this to the front page (voila), with the hope of drawing in more people who have long forgotten this thread.

posted by mlang at 9:07 AM on April 5, 2002
