Yay-- MeFi's back! What happened?

Matt's page says it was an IIS problem.

It's good to know it wasn't just me who couldn't access the site, and you guys had to suffer too.

Alls I gots to say is -- if that nogoodnik Anil had gotten in touch with me to get keys for such contingencies as restarting the MF server, this woulda never happened...

so who's going to be the first brave soul to dirty up the nice clean front page?
posted by Apoch at 12:32 PM on May 19, 2002

I heard a there was a small explosion on the east coast. Might have been jonmc.

I wonder if the front page is ready to be dirtied up. Looks like Matt's working with the database.
posted by eyeballkid at 12:32 PM on May 19, 2002

Heh. I just know when it first came up and I saw absolutely no posts I was like, "Crap!! The whole database is gone!" Then I remembered that I only see 24 hours worth of posts.. and uh.. there were no posts in the last 24.

Just for future reference, at least in the past 2 times Metafilter has been more than just briefly offline, you could get the scoop on Kottke's site.
posted by crunchland at 12:54 PM on May 19, 2002

Ok it's back but does everyone have to begin posting immediately after it's up? Come on.
posted by geoff. at 12:55 PM on May 19, 2002

Aww, crap. It's back. Now I'm never going to get any work done.

I was beginning to get the jitters...thank goodness it's back. :)

Man I stopped using the web because of this. I mean really; there's MetaFilter and then everything else. Welcome back.

I propose a move from IIS to Apache.

What a weekend, all kidding aside. I went without MeFi and quit smoking simultaneously. I've also gained 7 pounds and my hit count went through the ceiling.

To reward myself, I got the new Paul Westerberg and Wilco CD's. They kick ass. You will not be disappointed.

I propose a move from IIS to Apache

I've been proposing that for a while, and want to do it, but over the last three years I've been hosting a few friends, some of which use ASP pages in their sites, and moving to apache (which I love, love, love and my feelings for IIS are nothing but hate) would require them to re-engineer their sites and programming, or find a new host.

apache-asp is a project that, using perl, processes ASP over apache. your other option is to ask those people to consider php (for if the sites are merely db-driven, porting should not take long).

It wouldn't be fair to everyone else not to post the Best. MetFilter withdrawal comment. Ever. (As nominated by Iconomy, and voted on by acclimation). From jonmc's blog:

Hello, this is Dr. Fluggenhuffer of the Center for Mental Insanity in Bridgeport, CT. Mr McNally(who is the jonmc of which you speak) is under our care. He has been confined ever since he came upon a building with blue walls and began writing on them. When asked, he said "I'm posting" then began pounding the sidewalk with his fist saying "Refresh, Refresh" and "c'mon comment you bastards". As he was hauled away, he screamed for beings named Eyeballkid, iconomy, riffola and unclefes, who we believe to be his delusionary voices. Since he's been locked up he's been quiet except for repeated requests for pancakes. If you can alleviate the man's suffering some how, please let us know. Thank you.

Good to see all you people again!

Not that it is cheap, but there is always ChiliSoft ASP, which allows you to operate ASP pages on Apache servers.

mathowie, have you thought about slowly converting your stuff to PHP ? I know I have PHP running on my IIS servers (it's available as a CGI or an ISAPI filter), so far everything seems to be kosher. This might ease the transition to apache, if that's what you're after.
posted by patrickje at 6:46 PM on May 19, 2002

patrickje, coldfusion code ports fine to apache, I run a dev server with coldfusion and apache, and it runs great; it's just that other people on the server are using the MSXML parser and doing a lot of stuff with ASP. My real problem is with all the security problems that IIS requires, leaving the site open to hacks while also being an administration nightmare.

Side topic...

Did you get both the new Westerberg CDs? Or just the one he released under his name?

And I love the new Wilco album, too-- of course, I downloaded it about seven months ago, preordered it a month before it was going to be released... I'm a big fan.

I'd been meaning to post something about the whole saga surrounding the new album, with the delays and the switch of label and all the other stuff, and the results.

Both, nath. They include the Grandpaboy one with the solo record.

Rather than doing away with IIS altogether, it'd be easy to run both Apache and IIS on the box. Configure them both to use the same directories for the sites you want to serve. Set up IIS to listen on some weird port number and tell it to bind only to localhost. Use Apache's mod_proxy and mod_rewrite to pass requests for .asp pages to IIS. Some modification of Windows' HOSTS file may be necessary to get this to work right.

I'll be running a similar setup on my Wintel box once I get around to colocating it somewhere.

I just checked Amazon U.K to see if you get both discs here as well, though not having thought much of Suicane Gratification I had no intention of buying it.
Then I saw others who had bought it had also bought Tom Waits, Studio One d.j's and Wilco. Bang went another 12 quid. So good to see Mefi back and costing me time and money.

He hasn't posted since the 17th. Maybe he forgot about this place... Miguel, Miguel, where are you?

Miguel, Miguel, where are you?

On vacation until June 3 is what it looks like, but someone with a little more command of Portuguese than me (by which I mean, "understands it at all") may want to confirm that.

Thanks, EBK, for the tip.

Did anyone besides me see Attack of the Clones during the MeFi hiatus? And if you did, {spoiler alert} were you startled by the resemblance between the creatures on the rain planet and the aliens in A.I.?
posted by Lynsey at 6:16 PM on May 20, 2002

I did notice that. Figured it was a bit of an hommage.

posted by jragon at 9:19 PM on May 20, 2002

Well, hommage is too strong a word for a movie like AI. Howabout "inside joke between pals"?
posted by jragon at 9:20 PM on May 20, 2002

Word, jragon. And how about {another spoiler alert} the battle between the Jedi and the droids in the coliseum? Did it evoke thoughts of Gladiator just a wee bit?
posted by Lynsey at 10:07 PM on May 20, 2002

The colliseum sequance wasn't really Gladiator, for me although from what I could see Gladiator was Ben Hur without the racing. :-)

Although the two locations were the same the pacign and scale of events were totally different. So reminiscent yes but not blatent. I thought a far more blatent visual homage were the constant allusions to earlier (or later chronologically) star wars movies such as the smoke and lightsabers during the Obi Wan duel with Dooku. I think it was the fight scene in the empire strikes back with the 'impressive', 'most impressive' bit.

I found the visual jokes throughout very effective, althgough some of the dialogue was a little stilted the camera had a wit and eye that betrayed the script. It played to cinema's strengths.
posted by nedrichards at 2:37 PM on May 21, 2002

Speaking of visual jokes, there is also Hayden Christensen, whose nuanced woodenness also added greatly to Life As A House, which I'm surprised we're not discussing.
