Gosh, I was going to say, now that I'm using Mozilla, I can see how nice Metafilter really looks and how hard you've been working on its design, Matt! BTW, I just now got on MeTa after trying for about 1 hour. So thanks for all your hard work.

matt, sorry it didn't go smoothly. i just tried to post to the front page and i got a cfml error. (sorry i didn't notice what it was. sorry sorry.) when i went back and then hit post again it told me the url was already posted. so i opened in a new browser and saw that the thread did get posted right the first time. it just told me that it didn't.

i think i have just been not helpful in the slightest.

the feature were it looks for your url in the db is grand. great idea!

Matt - it seems OK now. It's just extremely difficult, that's all. TestFilter worked well before MetaFilter started working.

A little patience and gratitude is to be recommended. It's very, very fast. Does it fly!

Psshttt... Is this like the olden days? I love it!

That's one example of what is wrong with the new server. The default is "no" don't apply url variables to redirects, but with the new server you have to force the attribute to no, even though it is supposed to be the default.

Try as I might, I can find no fault with it now. I even did a reckless "since day one" search for "Matt" and got 5K+ results in just under 30 seconds[No need to check; take my word for it]. This is soooo fast and gorgeously clickety-clicky!

May I be the first to say Zippity-BopÂ®?

OK, on preview I do see a small bug. Should it disappear upon posting, you will see the R in a circle (registered) symbol. Should it not disappear, you will see a capital A with a caret over it (international symbols aren't my forte, OK?)

I repreviewed before I posted, and it added another two characters. One more capital A caret, and a square.

Matt, looks like a problem with extended ASCII?

A very small but significant bug I found, when commenting on vacapinta's tripe thread, is that acute and grave accents are no longer faithfully reproduced, so to speak.

Since cfmx is all java based, the db connector is now JDBC, which has all sorts of problems with high-ascii characters. It's one thing I'm working on fixing in the next few days. With the old ODBC drivers, we could submit any old text and the db would take it.

We had the exact problem at Blogger.com when we switched to a Java-based framework.

Wow, macromedia made an entire forum for these problems. This does not bode well.

Mefi doesn't seem any faster in IE for Mac, but it does in Mozilla. Explanation?

MetaTalk comment preview doesn't appear to be working in Moz1.0 on Win2K. Just get "Comment preview" then nothing - no comment, no form. Ok in IE6 (hence this post).

and heres an explanation:

ie for mac renders everything slowly anyway, so it doesn't matter if the server is fast

mozilla renders very fast, and now that the server kicks ass, you can see the difference

Just noticed the unicode problem myself. Use HTML special characters (e.g. &é for é) as an interim fix; that works.

Previewing it multiple times turns é to é to Ã©, though.

Woohoo! I'm so glad MetaFilter is back! I had to use Me3diaFilter all day, and it's damn slow.

(No complaints from me using HTML special characters. I usually do anyway. < Ã¨ Ã¡ -- see?)

Any suggested how to render Mefi Blue on Mozilla as deep as it is on IE? And the grey on Metatalk that deeper grey? And the font? There seems to be a lack of contrast...

You would send & as the character entity and it would come back to you as the same, but the entity would be rendered in the textarea as the character itself, and then the browser submits that (possibly multi-byte) character for preview. Whenever you submit a multi-byte character for preview it breaks... so I guess it's the preview bug from 1973 in cahoots with the unicode bug.

Not so much a big, perhaps, but : having written a comment, hit preview, and then had the IE error page show up (because the firewall at work here is a piece of crap, and it happens a lot), hitting the back button on my browser used to bring me back with the text still in the textbox.

This time, it was gone daddy gone, and my pearls of wisdom went unscattered.

No biggie, but I'm guessing that's something new serverside?

I like the search "bug" the way it is. I always click on "Go to the detail view..." anyway. Maybe it saves on CPU load? There's got to be a reason not to fix it.

I have no bugs to report, Matt, but just wanted to share in and affirm your MX hate. At my job, we're upgrading all our CMS servers to MX this week---or we're trying, with limited success. All I ask is a little bit of stinkin' backwards compatibility, but noooooooo.

I can imagine your own MX travails all too vividly---and you're not even getting a paycheck to deal with the headaches, all the worse. DONATE, PEOPLE! heh.

In IE 5.0 for windows, the front page loads fine, and then I click to read a thread, which is fine, but when I hit the back button to go back to the front page, I get the "dead" page. Hitting refresh still gives me the dead page. I have to go forward to the thread and click on "home" to get the front page back again. This also happens when I click on the posted link and then try to go back to the front page. If, however, I manually type in www.metafilter.com, I get the front page. Is the dead page just stuck in my browser, haunting it in some strange way?

The fonts are totally whacked in NN4.x for Unix. I'm sure this is an urgent concern. By "whacked" I mean they're too big, everywhere except the MeFi front page. Make it stop! Ahh!

Succa, really? On blogroots, the fonts are fixed at I think, 12px. On MetaFilter, everything is in points, and should be set to your prefs (the front page should be the same as the subpages).

But yeah, not really an urgent concern (you haven't upgraded to mozilla 1.1 yet?)

I hate to echo Paris on any matter, but I must concur that the 'dead' page loads on IE5.0 when using 'back' or 'forward' commands. Using IP address or URL works fine.

Yep. The front page of MeFi looks fine, all other pages (comment pages, all of MetaTalk, Blogroots) have a HUGE font, looking like Arial. This didn't happen before the server move.

It's Netscape 4.78 for Solaris, I believe.

But yeah, not really an urgent concern (you haven't upgraded to mozilla 1.1 yet?)

This is on the lab computers on campus, and the network admins are hellbent on keeping everyone five years behind the curve at all times. I've tried to get them to upgrade, but they're lazy.

Matt, just got a "remote procedure call failed" error message when trying to go to the comments on a thread. Sounds browser independent, but it was IE 4.5 on Mac OS 8.6.

Intermitient disconnects. IE5.5 and mozilla. Will be browsing along one second, then I'll click a link to a comments page and "connection refused" error. When that happens, i notice blogroots won't load either. I'll wait 2 mins, then everything's fine.

Hmm, just got a "document contains no data", too when trying to preview.

When I click on the "...and 4 threads and 249 comments to MetaTalk" links on my user page, I get this message. But I can still visit metatalk by clicking the normal Metatalk link, and clicking on the "...has posted 1 link and 509 comments to MetaFilter" links produces the normal list of threads/comments I've posted.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but when logging in/out of Metafilter there's a stall. It gives me the cookies but there's no HTML following.

(this isn't a problem with stale cookies, it happens from any browser, and it does it consistantly)
