there is currently a vertical gap on the front page September 11, 2002 11:10 AM Subscribe
With the sideblog open, there is currently a vertical gap on the front page running the entire vertical distance between the last line of the description in the "Today some of us thought it..." post, and the line with Miguel Cardoso line. The gap disappears in the sideblog is closed. This is in my Mozilla for PC.
I had the same thing happen today when I was accessing the site with a Netscape 7 browser. (I normally run IE6) From what I could tell it only happened when I tried to enlarge the font under the view menu of Netscape. I have no idea why it is happening only in Netscape, but when I went to original size all was good. Guess I should think about getting glasses or a bigger monitor instead of increasing the font size like that! All seems to work using IE though.
Good Luck!

There seems to be a "sweet spot" where Mozilla doesn't think there's enough room for the "posted by" line, but still doesn't break it up into two separate lines, so you get a gap between the post text and the bottom of the sidebar. It mainly seems to come up when you have font sizes set pretty big and/or with posts from users with long names. Steve_at_Linwood's current post on the FP gaps out this way when I zoom text to 150%, but at 200% all the "posted by" lines break normally.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but some of the text-ads have unbroken single lines in the 'headline' that don't wrap, and push the sidebar out the the left at any resolution, leaving whitespace along the righthand edge of the window. Not that it matters, but just FYI. (IE 6, XP)

I've also had this problem for a while (running Mozilla 1.0 on Win XP). I recently re-bookmarked the site with the toolbar collapsed to get around it. It doesn't seem to involve textads, though I never investigated it that thoroughly. My font-size is set pretty large, though I don't usually have it higher than 100% on mefi.
