I want to thank taz for continuing to maintain the Best Of Metafilter posts and sidebars, and specifically call out the November music round-up. It's splendid, thank you!
For the sake of our tender political psyches as well as the mods' I propose either: A )Dem primary candidates' posts are not included on the current US politics side bar or B) there be a separate Demprimary side bar, with the same opt in/out button. [more inside]
Over the last several years, the "Best Of" section seems to have become more of a "news" section, promoting podcast episodes as well as community and limited time events. There used to be much more of a focus on highlighting fantastic comments and interesting under-the-radar threads, across all the subsites, and I miss that. [more inside]
May I just take a moment to say that whoever has been doing the sidebar on the front page of the Blue has been just fuckin' KNOCKING IT OUT OF THE PARK lately? I love the grouping of similar posts, I love the themes that have been played with, I just love how creative and how engaging it has been lately. Today's Women's Work grouping was so great that it brought me here to make this post. This is just a shoutout and a thank you for what you're doing!
With all the latest political thread links pinned to the MeFi sidebar, it would be helpful to have a (## new) after each sidebar link (just as on regular MeFi posts) which take users to his/her earliest unread comment in each post. [more inside]
This is a grim, dispiriting pony, but would it be useful to have a sidebar listing most recent threads for various ongoing issues? We have that for US politics but things being as they are of late, should we open that up and also point to the most recent sexual harassment/assault threads, the most recent mass shooting threads, etc.? [more inside]
Based on a lot of discussion over the last year and especially the last couple months about how the site handles the visibility and organization of posts about contemporary US politics, we've put together a new sidebar tool that you can test out starting today. [more inside]
Just wanted to give a shoutout to whoever has been keeping the "New & Noteworthy" well-stocked with excellent bits and bobs from across the MeFi world. With horrid ongoing world events and super-bad news seemingly daily, taking a moment to check out something awesome means a lot. Plus it's easy to miss cool items from across the evolving MeFiverse. [more inside]
Can we have comments/fpps that have been sidebarred noted on the fpp page itself or, if it is a comment, in-thread? Also - can we have auto-notification to people when their comments or posts have been sidebarred? [more inside]
Can I just say thank you to whoever is responsible for keeping up the sidebar on the Blue? I have loved seeing it come to life in the past month or two and really appreciate being able to rely on it for awesome posts or comments I have missed. I'm sure I'm not alone in this (ahem).
I have noticed the most excellent regular updates to the front page sidebar (and bestof subsite) and just wanted to say GREAT JOB! Those posts really help me better enjoy all the cool stuff on MeFi that I might otherwise be missing. Thank you so much for keeping that thing full of fun new tidbits to read. It's like the best of the best of the web!
I always visit AskMeFi via My Ask. I have three categories turned off that don't interest me: Human Relations, Pets & Animals, and Work & Money. However, several of the 14 questions listed as "recommended" for me in the right-hand sidebar at the present moment fall into categories I don't want to see (three are in HR, one in W&M). I realize this list is, of course, machine-generated, but it would seem to make sense that if I've excluded a category in My Ask, a question in one of those categories should not get recommended for me. Mods, how exactly is the recommended list created, and any thoughts on tweaking how it works?
In the sidebar of the main Metafilter site, there's a Feb 21st entry* reading, in total: brainmouse reminds us: "Check out deezil's and samsara's profiles as really fantastic starting points." Say what now? That blurb would benefit from a few more words, like "Concerned about malware on your computer? brainmouse reminds us ..." (* yes, I'm slow)
Could we have a permanent sidebar to guide people towards previous threads or comments about class/race/sex/gender/identity issues, to foster better discussions without having to repeat meta-discussions? [more inside]
I was quite surprised when I realized that this absolutely brilliant comment hadn't been sidebarred. [more inside]
Can we have sidebar items link directly to the post or comment rather than Best Of? [more inside]
I enjoy the sidebar and the Best of Metafilter subsite that draws from it. I can't help but notice, though, that arguably the most popular posts are not well-represented there. [more inside]
I like the sidebar on the front page, and how it shows nifty stuff and contact activity. When I'm on my phone, I don't have that, and it makes me feel sad inside. Would the powers that be consider adding a line to the menu on the mobile site that would link to the sidebar content? In my head, this looks exactly like what we have on the front page, except tinier and by itself.
There hasn't been a sidebar post of a non-administrative nature in over a month. Are we flagging fewer posts? Are the moderators occupied with something more urgent? Is the sidebar deprecated in favor of the best-of blog? Has the content quality gone down? Something else? I look at the sidebar regularly and would appreciate seeing new content there.
Thank you so much for showing the love on the sidebar. Beyond deep appreciation, I would also like to offer this token of gratitude. [more inside]
Given the existence of the BestOf blog (which is lovely) what is the current role of the (also lovely, of course!) Sidebar? Is the Sidebar now like the Best Of BestOf? Or are they for featuring different sorts of things?
Pony Request: Indicate in a thread which comment(s) have been sidebarred. [more inside]
Pony request: music.mefi's 'most favorited this week' widget on sidebar (or at least this week's most favorited track). [more inside]
Whether it's by happenstance or by design, the increasing sidebarring of fantastic posts is greatly appreciated. [more inside]
I'd like to thank peagood for writing two sidebar-worthy treatises on completely different topics in the space of eight days. [more inside]
The sidebar (see Apr 12) featured this post, in which someone's seemingly obscure question was answered in just six minutes. I think MY experience was even more amazing (as my question was more obscure), though it did take Gator an hour and ten minutes to cough up an answer. What are some other AskMe Astounding Stories of Snappy Answers to Obscure Questions?
Lately I've been noticing strange behavior in my contact activity on the sidebar. Older posts are showing up as "So and So had an answer with 12 favorites!" but the comments linked are old and have hundreds of favorites. [more inside]
Is that the first time a comment from a deleted thread was sidebarred?
Small mobile site pony request: Sidebar and new post on the bottom menu? [more inside]
Perhaps sidebarable, Bwithh's comment on the Simpsons Banksy thread offers a fascinating look into animation in both Koreas, with several great links on N. Korea's relationship with the industry. [more inside]
Is it possible to make the Mefi Sideblog Updates (mefi) Twitter account link to the actual thread, rather than the sidebar archive? [more inside]
My front page contact sidebar is no longer showing posts by contacts that have received the threshold of 12+ favorites, plus other odd behavior. [more inside]
If a contact's account is closed, either because they chose to disable it or they got banned, can (should?) that show up in the "Contact Activity" sidebar?
I would like to submit this thread on ADD/ADHD for sidebarring. It contains some of the most honest, vulnerable, relatable descriptions of the effects on one's daily life that I have ever heard. Since ADD comes up a lot in AskMe, I think it would be valuable to highlight it.
Pony request: What about highlighting fantastic Metatalk comments in the MeTa sidebar? [more inside]
Lacking confidence, I will not call this a pony. It's just a suggestion: how about setting that optionally removes moderators from the "contact activity" sidebar? I adore jessamyn, and many of her answers deserve to be favorites/best answers, but due to her high-profile here, my list has become a digest of jessamyn's activity, which crowds out all my other contacts. (This only affects people who have moderators as contacts.)
A couple months ago, someone asked about the history of Gold Bond powder. As occasionally happens 'round these parts, the daughter of a 2nd-generation exec popped in to drop some knowledge. [more inside]
A tiny mobile pony: the sidebar of each subsite as an option in the menu? [more inside]
Sidebar nomination: Author of Salmon fMRI paper (MeFi's own prefrontal) pops in to MetaFilter thread to answer questions. Awesome!
I can see the favorites this comment has, and it shows up in my side bar because it was made by a contact, but the comment has been deleted.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong with regard to sidebar nominations, but this thread is nothing but amazing and accessible tips on kicking ass at cooking and it is making me exceptionally hungry.
Mefi's own mike mongo, one of the creators of the 'Andre the Giant has a posse' and 'OBEY' memes , reflects on his experience and critiques the obama/joker montage in this post [more inside]
For obvious reasons the "upcoming meetups" sidebar is starting to look empty and lonely. May we have the confirmed meetups posted to the sidebar? [more inside]
The date format of the sidebar is a bit confusing to non-US readers 4.06.2009 reads as the 4th June to me. Could it be formatted in a less ambiguous way: 4 Jun 2009 or 2009.06.04
Pony request: Can we have contact activity on the green? [more inside]
My AskMe from this morning was answered beautifully, with depth and consideration. As it is right now, at 20:07 EST, it is a beautiful little anthology on How to Read. I would shamelessly nominate it for the sidebar.
A bit of sidebar wigginess appears to be happening on the Recently Listened Tracks by MeFites via Last.fm page.
What system decides what gets sidebarred? While most are fantastic, sometimes an entry doesn't seem so amazing.
