MetaFilter IRC is back November 24, 2002 8:09 PM Subscribe
MetaFilter IRC is back (in full effect, YO!). Visit: irc://irc.metafilter.com:6667/mefi. If your DNS server is caching the old address, use: irc://irc.turlyming.com:6667/mefi.
Good deal! Weird thing...when I try to use m e-mail (_deso_@yahoo.com), i get a weird error message that user name: [~_deso_] is not known, but when i change my e-mail on mIRC to just _deso_, everthing proceeds as expected. My user name, jmd82, is used when I join #mefi...any ideas on the e-mail addy problem (I never had this problem before the server went down)

it might be unrelated, jmd. when you log in with a tilde username, it's because the irc server couldn't contact your identd server to confirm your username is what you claim it is. (mirc runs identd within itself, so it normally wouldn't matter what username you choose. it's only a concern for users on unix machines.) the message is still curious, because it might point to something else... most irc servers request that you send it a username and password to connect, but the mechanics of that is mostly that anyone still can. maybe it wouldn't accept ~deso with the tilde, due to the identd failure, but would accept deso by itself because it lacks that tilde character.
i couldn't make it to irc last night, but i'll try to get there more often (somewhat early in the evening).

See thats the curious thing...When i use _deso_@yahoo.com as my e-mail, there is NO tilde, it just magically appears there as i have an error w/ user name [~_deso_], but the error goes away when take off the @yahoo.com part.
Also, maybe we could get the Wen night thing going again (thought with school winding down, I doubt I'de be able to make it on a consistent basis).

what client are you using? mirc, right? mirc should be able to pull the username from your email address and use that for the USER command (which is a part of the protocol for login). it sounds like your version of mirc, or other client, isn't doing that. it sounds to me like it's passing the whole email field as your username, which involves an illegal username character ("@") and is thus getting turned into the ~_deso_@etc. this could be fixed by upgrading your irc client (maybe), or if chris were to turn off the configuration on his irc server that dictates only those with valid idents connect. sounds like the easiest thing to do, however, is just not to use a full email.
(disclaimer: the reason i know a lot about the irc protocol is because i used to write software for irc.)

Thanks for the tips...I'll just take the easy route and not use @yahoo.com, though it is interesting that my full e-mail addy works for other irc servers, just not metafilter's.

What is a good time to go on the channel? I remember in its previous incarnation there was a problem keeping the room occupado, which in a community of 17000+ people who like nothing better than yapping about nothing, really should be easy.

for me, the evening is generally best. you really would think mefi's irc channel would be more popular.

The server just went down, (temporarily, I hope,) but there were quite a few who were there today. Here's hoping it wasn't a one time thing.

It would be nice to talk about Mefi threads on that channel rather than, exclusively, vulgarities, disgusting things, and the like. Sheeez.

This amounts to complaining about bad posts without posting anything yourself, Paris.

Hey, it works beautifully. I had a good conversation about wind patterns, Formula 1 racing. Pepsi and related topics with Riffola, Janetland and Bethbeth. No vulgarities at all, Paris! ;)
