Stan, you missed your opportunity - the proper line was:

What's up, Doc?

Posting "What's Up Doc" is worth a shot, I'd better get in while this thread's still hot.

Yep, your thread has been hit with an episode of "Yo MeFi Raps!"

Why is there a MetaTalk post about this? Not to be a literalist, but the human clock was begun in March 2001 and the letter project was begun in April 2001, which it says clearly on both sites. Both sites have been widely seen, and I think a sort of creative outpouring of interesting links is the best possible response you could expect from this post.
posted by RJ Reynolds at 12:47 PM on December 10, 2002

I never heard of the Letter Project, did several searches on MeFi on it, and thought it would be a clever way to frame the post. As you can see, I was originally confused on Jesse Helms' posts, but I just said to hell with it and went along with the fun.

But it's rollin' now, baby. Only the hand of Mathowie can stop it before it gets to the bottom of the hill and crushes the peaceful village below.

I think mine and the Cheney thread are neck and neck racing to set an all-time new low for Metafilter.

"On second thought, he is dumb"

How rude. I was under the impression that you thought I was a really smart guy jmd82. Why are we having this falling out? Did I do something to hurt you? Is there anything I can do to make you like me again?

On second thought, I guess I am kind of an idiot. I've been very stupid. Do I have to start a new Metatalk thread taking myself to task for being dumb, or can we just can we just get some duel use out of this one?

It's not worth starting another thread about, nor am I really willing to write up all the links to support this observation, but god, what a weird day at the "filter." People seem to be alternating between bitching and silliness. Are days like today the reason Matt might feel tired of it all? Everybody needs to take a breath and chill out.

Why visit www.metafilter.com when you can go take a walk in the sunshine instead?

I love this site, but please people, try and control yourselves.

If your idea of kindness is applauding when people move in to piss all over a new post in a pointless and juvenile manner, crunchland, then I'll gladly pass on the honor. Of all things that Matt (and most of the rest of us, for that matter) have made clear that he objects to, that is near the top of the list. So what's your point?
posted by rushmc at 9:03 PM on December 10, 2002

I would say that Matt isn't even watching. There has been a lot of nonsense, such as this thread, the clock thread and the one you pointed to, rushmc, that would usually be deleted. I think this is a case of "while the cat's away..."

Anyway, g'nite all.

I don't think he was applauding, I think he just couldn't resist the temptation to reverse the words in "kind of getting old." I almost posted (nearly) the same thing myself.

If the kindness of your idea is piss

I'll gladly honor the pointless juvenile

to pass in gladly.

move on, applauding.

(No, I didn't mean anything by that. It's meaningless, in fact.)

I'm stumped on both. Damn, I suck at rebuses. (rebi?)
posted by dgaicun at 6:35 PM on December 11, 2002

Ed's is "What we have here is a failure to communicate". Mine was "You're welcome, taz". (ewer, whelk, m, taz). Ed wins - his is an actual hyperlinked rebus.

Besides the rebus, which is really grand, this thread sucks. The "Matt isn't here so I can act like an ass" mentality I see so often when I come to MetaTalk is sort of baffling, along with the "this thread is crap and is going to be deleted anyway, so while it's still here I shall regale you all with my oh-so-clever wit" attitude I see here so much lately. I know. Why don't we show Matt that we are big boys who wear big boy underpants**, and just not say anything if we don't have anything worthwhile to add to a thread? No? Maybe we could take a pledge - "I promise I will only contribute completely meaningless drivel just for the sake of clicking the post button 9 times today instead of my usual 10". Whatever works for you.

MetaTalk: we're big boys and we wear big boy underpants.

**You guys hopefully wear big boy underpants. Or maybe you wear nothing at all - doesn't matter, as long as you're potty trained. Me, I wear really cute lace panties. Maybe you do too.

Thank you iconomy. It seems as if the majority of threads in Metatalk degenerate into chortling, masturbatory in-joke one-upmanship these days, and it's beginning to annoy me a bit, too.

Ummm, I guess I am guilty of this to some extent lately - that secret place which cannot be mentioned has got to me, I guess. I will try to stop - I promise :-)
