It's purty small right (if yummy). But won't jonmc need liquor?

jonmc is allowing himself the occasional beer, but wont need liqour no. But the other MeFite's might enjoy some libations. Plus it only stays open till 10.

I'm in. When we decide on a date, place and time, I'll make the invitation. Send an e mail to mefiparty AT evanizer DAWT com (replacing, of course, those capitalized words with the standard characters for electronique mail) to get on the list for the invite, should this all work out.

"A Salt and Battery" was just a tip of the hat to jonmc, it's based on a #mefi conversation. I am game to any subway accessible location.

I think we should have a dimsum brunch or dinner, as suggested by crunchland. Anyone else like this kind of thing? And if you need to drink, you can drink beforehand.

Also, should the gathering be after New Year's day?

and yes, you have to fly in, EBK

posted by goneill at 5:10 PM on December 21, 2002

I am a veggie (no eggs, no fish, no meat), so if we do dinner and the place we pick isn't veggie friendly, I'll just drop by and say hi or something.
posted by riffola at 5:37 PM on December 21, 2002

I'm in. I don't think A Salt & Battery is large enough, and Odessa is pretty small as well. Maybe Jack Dempsey's on 2nd Ave and 4th St, or Grassroots on St. Marks b/t 2nd and 3rd? Maybe Panchito's on MacDougal near Bleecker, which has yummy Mexican and lots of good drinks to boot? I think after New Year's is the best bet (I can't come before the 30th); how 'bout Friday after New Year's (the 3rd)?
posted by The Michael The at 7:25 PM on December 21, 2002

Friday, absolutely -- no commuting problems that way for this bridge and tunnel girlie. And I'm up for anything, but a spot with an alcohol license would make me happier. :)

Will this be after the holidays? I'm in out of town until Dec 30th. I'd like to be there but can this wait until January?

Somewhere where you can eat (vegetarian - i've been one for a long time and never have a problem finding something. but we should make sure the place is riffola approved too.) but don't have to, and somewhere where you can drink but don't have to and on a friday. perhaps friday the third. afterwards we can all go to menhata, aka the bulgarian bar.

(grassroots is my 'local' but i don't think it's a good idea.)
posted by goneill at 10:18 PM on December 21, 2002

mmmm...dim sum. Not sure it'd work that great for our purposes. Fridays and Saturdays are good for me -- but will be crazy-busy with family stuff for a little while. Might the following Friday, the 10th, work for anyone?

(sorry to even raise the subject, given that a consensus seems to be emerging.)

I don't know NYC *that* well yet (have only lived here for a few months and haven't had as many chances to explore as I'd like), but a conveniently-located place is Tir Na Nog, an Irish-esque pub with decent food on 8th between 33rd and 34th (catercorner from Penn Station/MSG and across the street from the big post office.)

Hama7: you're absolutely right, as usual. As is riffola. A few of us have been enjoying Evanizer on the MeFi chat line and trying to convince him to return. I've been there almost every night and the level of conversation there, both fun-wise and stun-wise, has been at least the equal of MetaFilter at its best. Join us there and help restore the beloved evanizer to its natural habitat! ;)

Join us there and help restore the beloved evanizer to its natural habitat!

I'd would love to, but is there are certain mysteries which surround #mefi, and which may be intentional for all I know. The most obvious mystery is: What is it? An instant messenger service extention? Any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated.

I am hopelessly ill adept at keeping up with the latest, sadly. I only found this zany free-for-all three days ago.

We should definitely pick a place with beer. Otherwise I'll be forced to just show up drunk already.
posted by Samsonov14 at 7:12 AM on December 23, 2002

A couple of things to think about:

1. We need a place that is crowd friendly. Last time there were about 25 total, I think. This may be difficult on a Friday night in NYC. Anyone know a large place that we can take over? The difficulty with Friday nights is you get the after work crowd running right into the going out crowd. A Saturday might be better because we could meet earlier and skip the after work crowd. Although at this point, it may be too late to change the date.

2. A place with more lighting this time, please. Last time I could barely see outlines of figures, let alone faces. This works for crack whores past the first flush of youth; not so great for a meet-up.

posted by amberglow at 9:20 AM on December 23, 2002

please, not in midtown? (i work there and i hate it so.) do you know any downtown management, amberglow?

the aforementioned 'grassroots' is well-lit, but again does not have food, except popcorn. (i also really hate well-lit bars, perhaps because i resemble a crack whore...)

Here are the requirements, so far:

Food
Alchohol
Well-lit
Big Space
I think we should settle on Friday the 10th.

posted by dong_resin at 9:49 AM on December 23, 2002

we need somewhere relatively inexpensive, too.

a diner with alchohol? what about around the clock, or 7A? (in the interest of full disclosure, i'm being really selfish as all of these places are in stumbling home distance to my house). I'm done now. If we want to be fancier than maybe b-bar.

I agree with jonmc, no clubbing.
posted by goneill at 10:02 AM on December 23, 2002

B Bar is a (not-huge) step up from 7A (though the wings there are pretty damned alright), and it is a little bigger, which might work to our advantage, especially on a Friday night.

And, for those who do, it's monkey-friendly. Or so I have read.
posted by chicobangs at 10:09 AM on December 23, 2002

sorry, goneill, the only downtown-ish management i know is the Eagle's, and somehow I don't think that would work out. : >

B Bar is total madness on a Friday night. 7A is kind of ... eeesh (I'm allowed to say that, I eat there once a month). What about Chez Es Saada? Tiny upstairs, giant basement bar, cocktail central.
posted by RJ Reynolds at 10:42 AM on December 23, 2002

i was going to suggest chez es saada. that's so funny. then i thought 'no - they won't like it...' so i'm totally down with that. it's well-lit enough. there's food (albeit more pricy than a salt and battery...) if we go to a salt and battery and eat then it's just a trip around the corner to chez es saada...

But I am the after-work crowd!

I have the sneaky suspicion that Around-the-Clock would be too small, and their wait-stuff are notoriously crowd un-friendly. B Bar is often brought up, but alas and alack, that on a Friday night would be a near-impossibility.

Whereever we go, please let it be within short distance of public transportation. Please?

Pioneer Bar sounds great.

So...before this thread totally peters out -- have we achieved any sort of consensus on a date? The 10th and the 24th are what I hear the most. Anyone else who hasn't weighed in, please do so.

(I'm not trying to hijack the process here...just figure that if we have a semi-solid date in hand, it'll be easier to pick a venue.)

Jesus bloody Christ, how long are you all gonna dither on this? I came back looking for a date, time and place, and find even the *date* hasn't been settled yet.

And the Pioneer Bar's been done already. Like, two meetings ago.

So, here are two proposals:

A. January 10
7 o'clock in the evening
The Edge
95 East Third Street at First Avenue

My mini-review: darts, pool, couches, benches, stools and a convenient location. Small enough to never get too loud, big enough to hold 60 or 70 people. Ronnie who runs the joint is friendly. Many hardcore pool players to try yourself against; be careful: they follow the rules, run the signup sheet like military roll call, and sometimes cheat just to get slowpokes and bad players off the table. Home of the hypereducated slacker, such as NYU associate professors who are likely to get you into conversations about neural pathway reinforcement or containing superheated gases using magnetic fields or open-door prison management or...

OR

B. January 10
8 o'clock in the evening
Ace Bar
531 East 5th Street Between Avenues A and B

My mini-review: Pool, pinball and huge booths. In a pre-boom city, Ace Bar was a logical place to go when your Upper East Side losers decided to go slumming but didn't want to feel to vulnerable. Now often crowded, it's still a good place for a good time, but you've got to dominate or be dominated. Highly recommended for large, loud groups. There are no close or precious philosophical conversations taking place here. It's about drinking, self-obliteration and scoping. Also a good striking point for many of the newer and newish East-East Village joints along Avenue C and the East-Lower East side dives and joints below Houston.

Vidiot, that did come out wrong, but it gave me the one good laugh I've had today. Thank ye, kindly.

(A) sounds good to me.

Triple-A, babes. :) I can't play pool for shit, but I *can* talk. And talk. * Ahem. *

I'll see y'all on the 10th.

I'll vote for (A) as it's closer to my subway. Excellent... (wrings hands Burns-style)

I probably won't be able to make it but I vote (A) just to support Mo Nickels, who saved the event from itself. I hope you're all reading World New York again.

Even though I object to Mo Nickles' patriarchal intrusion on what was supposed to be MY EVENT, I will concur with choice A on the 10th. I will send you all the official invite.

I hereby bequeath all glory and proceeds of the pending Metafilter rendezvous to the everlasting Evanizer, to be accrued and held by him, his heirs or his estate, in perpetuity.

Evan, my son, this one's for you.

A.

Because benches may be good, but couches are even better.

A.

Why the hell not.

(is anyone else reminded of that Sopranos episode where the two guys in Christopher's acting class were arguing with each other, saying "A!" "B!")

Metafilter: A! B!

Hmm, well, since I've actually managed to get a shout out, I guess I'll have to put in an appearance. Either place is good, I like 'em both.

Will it be too geeky to wear my shirt at a MeFi event?

I'm down with A. So it's a plan? Ms_Vader: I'm coming in from Verona. Gen: Yes.

gen- If you wear yours, I'll wear mine.

So, it's (A) the Edge? Jeez, I was just in there last night! I'm one of the hardcore pool players Mo mentioned...

gen, mkultura, there'll be at least three of us.

("But ... but I thought you said it was gonna be a costume party!")

Thought I'd chime in late. I'll be there, and I would have voted for A, if I'd've voted. Warning: I'm a very, very softcore pool player.

Ms_Vader and condour75: I'm coming in from Montclair, which you and I are neighbors. Is anyone else nearby?

gen et al: four of us.
posted by Songdog at 9:16 AM on January 6, 2003

OK, Songdog and condour75 - any interest in meeting up before and heading in together? (I'm always so lost in the city.)
posted by MsVader at 9:43 AM on January 7, 2003

how late are people planning on staying? I think I'm going to a show early in the eve but could swing by later...

I bet we could assemble a crack team of crack whores from this list.

I'll close the place, if no-one sends me home. Hope you come by, mdn!

Just as a sidenote, isn't this the Hells Angel's bar? I seem to recall they're right next door. (Although it does make it one of the safest blocks in the city.)

Here's the official invitation.

MsVader - I'll already be in the city for work, but I look forward to meeting my neighbors!

Raise a glass to Oolong for us, please?

Better yet, hold a good old-fashioned Irish wake for our beloved pancake bunny!

(Aw, darn...Ricky and I can't make this one. If anybody still wants to get together on Jan 24th, let's start a new thread on it, okay? We miss you guys!)

After getting all excited about the benches, I am sad to now say I can't be there. My tears fall like a rain, mingling, somehow, with those of UncleFes.
