insomnyuk: you need to grow up and take a time out.

MetaFilter should be, above all else, fun. You're both taking things too personally, and then attacking people in a manner that is out of proportion to the prevailing tone.

And, you're trolling. Please leave or stop.

Maybe an addition to the "comments" section of the "About" page would be helpful... encouraging people to avoid name calling and ask intelligent questions. And say "pike!"

I know, some of you want to throw things at me for adding that last bit. I've never been one to harp on the weird little self-emergent behaviors that I find fascinating in an online community, but lately, sometimes I've felt like the playful self-emergent stuff can often threaten to encroach on the charter... this place is supposed to have observations of interesting things and interesting discussion as one of its central tenets.

I also know I'm not the first person to point that out, so I don't know exactly what good comes of it... maybe the next 10 people who hurl a personal insult in a thread need a time out?
posted by namespan at 5:56 PM on July 24, 2003

i didn't contribute to that particular thread but i have noticed a hulk-like change come over me while being on mefi: at first i was content to discuss/argue topics [fairly] civlized. in time though, my hulkamanian ego got the best of me when i discovered that the only way to be heard was to... well... act like a complete asshole with a big loud stupid mouth, and that's exactly what i ended up being.

it's weird 'cause IRL, i'm an utter wimp, but online personas have a way of getting way the fuck outta control (especially in males IMO) and destroying any sense of decency and respect for others.

I would also make my usual remark about "perfectly reasonable" posts about cutting off my right hand, a la the last supremely fascinating metatalk thread, but I won't. Instead, I'm going to try to derail this one by saying:

Am I the only one who misses Son_of_Minya? I know we all hate trolls - sort of - but I really like reading comments from people whose viewpoint I truly can't understand.

I don't mean this in the thomcatspike-manner (where the grammar sense does make not), and I don't mean it in the Steve_at_Linwood manner (where the politics are different from mine).

Son_of_Minya - though I don't think I ever agreed with him - had a very strange (and sometimes offensive or crazy) point of view. I enjoyed reading his comments. I really liiked to see how he stitched his political and moral viewpoints together. Does anyone else think he got unfairly alienated?

Interrobang's got a point. Too many trolls around here remind me of abusive bullies, who just keep saying "I know you are, but what am I? I know you are, but what am I?". The most frustrating part is knowing that their ignorance and immaturity acts as their greatest defence. It's nice finding people with a bit of complexity and depth to their ideals.

Yes, exactly. Insomnyuk's behavior in the linked thread is like this. At first, he makes a statement about something. Then, everyone asks him to define the words he's using. He does not. Later, he resorts to using the word "fuck" too many times in a single sentence.

People like Son_of_Minya make extremely unpopular statements, but at least when someone would call him out on what he'd said, he'd define terms, directly respond to questions, and make a definite attempt to flesh out his perspective.

Like I've already said, I never agreed with him, but I liked having him here. I really don't like it when everyone's just agreeing with each other around here, and I like posters who I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT AGREE WITH as a matter of principle who are willing to take some time to try to explain to the rest of us why they think the way they do.

Plus, even though he's the millionaire owner of a major financial research group (those leftists and their international stock services organizations!) who ran on the Republican Party ticket with the endorsement of every conservative paper in New York, he's a liberal "in your book" for doing what George Bush did.

insomnyuk has definitely lost his marbles, but skallas, in the past week, has made some absurdly offensive remarks regarding prayer and the War in Iraq. I'm not at all excusing insomnyuk's behavior, but claiming, for instance, that "prayer doesn't work" is incredibly rude and tactless. Beliefs are beliefs, but in a public forum that's read by thousands, some taste and respect is required. Perhaps insomnyuk is not alone with his anger.

I remember reading the "prayer does not work" thread. I *think* you're talking about this one, but my "search" function is not working right now on this electronic abacus I use.

Skallas (of course) could provide no empirical evidence that prayer does not work.

However, in the thread you're talking about, I remember a number of people calling him out about it, and he didn't use abject (and hilarioiusly original!) profanity as his sole defense. Unlike Insomnyuk, he posted very long defences of what he was saying. There weren't any "douchebags" - whatever those are, no matter their physical mass - in there.

That is a slight exaggeration, don't you think? I saw it as more of a personal observation and while many may disagree with the statement, it was hardly offensive. To me, anyway. It may be so to someone who has a very thin skin, in which case MeFi is not the ideal place to hang out.

Only in that, when you have a large group of strangers listening in on your conversation, it may be better to keep in mind that they are there and consider their sensibilities.

On second thoughts, you are right. Provided you are speaking honestly, on topic and not attacking others personally (too much), you should be free to speak your mind, regardless of the circumstances.

If everyone elevates their discourse then fewer incidents like this ought to happen. If you avoid insulting people then fewer insults get thrown your way (which explains, incidentally, my complaint a week or so ago against a member of our community that was met with a lot of "grow a thicker skin" comments -- I don't insult (much. anymore.) so I am taken aback when people do it to me.)

My advocacy is just to start banning everyone who is a dick. Give some advance warning, maybe have a temporary system, but the mean-spirited "loco" comments really drag down MeFi.

The Streets- The Irony Of It All

Hello, Hello. My names Terry and I'm a law abider
There's nothing I like more than getting fired up on beer
And when the weekends here I to exercise my right to get paralytic and fight
Good bloke fairly
But I get well leery when geezers look at me funny
Bounce 'em round like bunnies
I'm likely to cause mischief
Good clean grief you must believe and I ain't no thief.
Law abiding and all, all legal.
And who cares about my liver when it feels good
Wwhat you need is some real manhood.
Rasher Rasher Barney and Kasha putting peoples backs up.
Public disorder, I'll give you public disorder.
I down eight pints and run all over the place
Spit in the face of an officer
See if that bothers you cause I never broke a law in my life
Someday I'm gonna settle down with a wife
Come on lads lets have another fight

Eh hello. My names Tim and I'm a criminal,
In the eyes of society I need to be in jail
For the choice of herbs I inhale.
This ain't no wholesale operation
Just a few eighths and some Playstations my's vocation
I pose a threat to the nation
And down the station the police hold no patients
Let's talk space and time
I like to get deep sometimes and think about Einstein
And Carl Young And old Kung Fu movies I like to see
Pass the hydrator please
Yeah I'm floating on thin air.
Going to Amsterdam in the New Year - top gear there
Cause I taker pride in my hobby
Home made bongs using my engineering degree
Dear Leaders, please legalise weed for these reasons.

Like I was saying to him.
I told him: "Top with me and you won't leave."
So I smacked him in the head and downed another Carling
Bada Bada Bing for the lad's night.
Mad fight, his face's a sad sight.
Vodka and Snake Bite.
Going on like a right geez, he's a twat,
Shouldn't have looked at me like that.
Anyway I'm an upstanding citizen
If a war came along I'd be on the front line with em.
Can't stand crime either them hooligans on heroin.
Drugs and criminals those thugs on the penny coloured will be the downfall of society
I've got all the anger pent up inside of me.

You know I don't see why I should be the criminal
How can something with no recorded fatalities be illegal
And how many deaths are there per year from alcohol
I just completed Gran Tourismo on the hardest setting
We pose no threat on my settee
Ooh the pizza's here will someone let him in please
"We didn't order chicken, Not a problem we'll pick it out
I doubt they meant to mess us about
After all we're all adults not louts."
As I was saying, we're friendly peaceful people
We're not the ones out there causing trouble.
We just sit in this hazy bubble with our quarters
Discussing how beautiful Gail Porter is.
MTV, BBC 2, Channel 4 is on until six in the morning.
Then at six in the morning the sun dawns and it's my bedtime.

Causing trouble, your stinking rabble
Boys saying I'm the lad who's spoiling it
You're on drugs it really bugs me when people try and tell me I'm a thug
Just for getting drunk
I like getting drunk
Cause I'm an upstanding citizen
If a war came along I'd be on the front line with em.

Now Terry you're repeating yourself
But that's okay drunk people can't help that.
A chemical reaction inside your brain causes you to forget what you're saying.

What. I know exactly what I'm saying
I'm perfectly sane
You stinking student lameo
Go get a job and stop robbing us of our taxes.

Err, well actually according to research
Government funding for further education pales in insignificance
When compared to how much they spend on repairing
Leery drunk people at the weekend
In casualty wards all over the land.

Why you cheeky little swine come here
I'm gonna batter you. Come here.

You see, insomnyuk is a kid. That's what everyone keeps forgetting. He's immensely hyperactive, and can't be expected to have any reasoned beliefs until he's got a little more life experience under his belt. What's to be gained from demanding that he define his terms and explain his position? He can't. That's been conclusively proven. He'd like to think he's earned a place among the thoughtful, respected conservatives in this forum, but as soon as he's pressed to clarify anything he says, he resorts to the online equivalent of drawing offensive pictures and labeling them with the names of the people who've challenged him.

Don't engage him. He is not going to calm down and shut up, and he's not going to get banned from the site, either. Let's just leave the poor little dear alone, now. Maybe when he's had some time to grow up a bit, he'll be able to offer some kind of contribution to the site? Stranger things have happened.

Bizarrely (or fittingly), this metatalk thread has a parallel with the City Hall story that started it all.

For instance, this comment by crunchland I thought at first was referring to Mr. Askew. Before he left his house that day he "put his affairs in order" (NY Times link) and left a note for his brother, which implies that he planned on not coming back, which it turn implies that he thought he might get shot and killed in return for killing Mr. Davis.

Then I realized that crunchland was probably referring to insomnyuk's behavior and the mefi police.

I have a question -- is there a way to read the "alt" text for insomnyuk's image files without having to go into the HTML source code?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! three years ago you'd have been run out of here by a band of howling web designers for asking such an ignorant, um, uninformed question. fortunately, mefi has become a nicer place since then. hover your cursor over the photo. use the force, rather than view the source, luke! a whole new realm of the web is about to open for you.

I agree. I would prefer no crapping at all but if one must crap I hope they do it in here rather than in a Mefi thread. It takes time before a new Metafilter user finds Metatalk so hopefully they can discover the rich treasures to be found in Metafilter posts before they are exposed to cyber-suicides like the one we just witnessed here.

After all, MeTa is all about the crapping.

And here I was thinking that the default colors of MetaFilter and MetaTalk represented sky and earth.

Ew. :)
