Thanks. Wow, 543 Mbytes/day. And most of that is text. And of course it's always fun to look at search requests. After looking through them I had to go off to google and look up "hensel twins" - I thought they may be adult film stars or something. But no, they're just conjoined twins.

All I can say is that somehow mefi got 9 hits via MY page. That's kinda weird, but considering the hit or two I get per month via my mefi profile, I guess fair's fair.

I propose we come up with a nonsense "meme," talk it up in MF and then see how long it takes for search engine hits to start finding it. A while back I searched google for "strawberry shakuhachi" and got a ton of hits. Switched to "papaya shakuhachi" and that still gets 11. "Shakuhachi porn" gets 69. "Toboggan porn" gets 68. And then there's "shakuhachi toboggan." Somewhere, someone is poring over their logs and saying "yow! Someone is searching for "shakuhachi toboggan"! Now that is weird."

What strikes me about looking at the refer log is that it is "game over" for the search engines who are not Google! I feel very sorry for my friends at Inktomi... How long before Excite, Lycos and Alta Vista are simply portals to Google search results ... which will have the effect, of course, of killing off the meta-search engines (like my favorite, Profusion, whose raison d'etre is the existence of a multitude of discreet search technologies.

The fact that other search engines are not sending lots of visitors here does not mean that they're lacking users. It's more likely that they haven't indexed MeFi as well as Google has. Excite and Lycos are both in the top ten most popular sites, and AltaVista is number 11 on that list. Admittedly, many of those visitors are using the sites for something other than just their search feature, but even the experts don't know what the future has in store.

Baylink: It's not me... I'm not even on the top 10 list. Besides, my MeFi stats page hardly hits the site at all. Maybe 60 requests everytime I run the scraper.
