Great Dane meetup photos! September 10, 2003 11:20 AM   Subscribe

Saturday evening's meetup at the Great Dane brewpub in Madison, WI was a success. Fun was had. Beer was consumed. Photos were taken.

Cool, looks like fun (and like a cool bar).

How come the only names I recognized were interrobang & rocketman? Is Wisconsin both a dairy-rich and a lurker-rich state?

Thanks for posting these (even though interrobang looks like I farted in picture 7).

(even though interrobang looks like I farted in picture 7).

Is that why interrobang's jersey is 2 shades darker than the others in the 3-jersey picture? What the hell have you been eating, man?

Hey, I don't think of myself as a lurker.

The meetup was a lot of fun, by the way. Thanks to rocketman for suggesting it, and thanks to everybody who showed up (especially those who drove from other parts of the state). And thanks to aine42 for posting the pictures!

Sorry I missed it, guys.

I gotta get one of those shirts.
posted by blueshammer at 1:03 PM on September 10, 2003

Next time, blueshammer. Judging by the reaction to this one, we'll have more.

You know, I'd love to check out those photos, but the net nanny here at work is blocking shutterfly.com. How bizarre.

Anyway, yeah, it was a great time, but kinda came to an end after I threw a drunken strike that landed on interrobang's skull. It had something to do with the synchronization of Zaireeka, but I can't remember why I was so upset about that.
posted by rocketman at 1:14 PM on September 10, 2003

...And thanks to everyone who showed up. Next time we're going to Visions, followed by breakfast at Bennett's!
posted by rocketman at 1:19 PM on September 10, 2003

Yeah -- there were no Zaireeka Fight Night photos, unfortunately.

And there definitely should be more of these little gatherings. (Maybe we'll even throw one here in MKE and invite you Madtown folks over.)

I'm wondering something - at these MeFi meetups, do people learn each other's real names or do they address each other by user names? Seems a lot easier to do that latter, unless one has a unpronounceable user name.
posted by orange swan at 3:35 PM on September 10, 2003

We mostly went with real names, I think. At least I tried to. I would have felt silly calling someone crystalblue, mouthnoize, or interrobang in a bar. Hell, I feel silly enough using them on Metafilter itself.
posted by UKnowForKids at 3:52 PM on September 10, 2003

Sounds like it was a good time. Work kept me from going to this meetup, but provided that it isn't sometime in the next three weeks I'll definitely be at the next one.
posted by Inkslinger at 4:19 PM on September 10, 2003

man, i'd forgetten about the part where interrobang got punched-and i'd also forgot about how i grabbed his ass (i didn't know that camera was there!) - what a wild night that boy had!

Actually, it wasn't until today that i started feeling back up to 100%. You're a cruel, cruel lover Barrister's Brown Ale...

and it was really nice to meet everybody!

Although judging by the pictures, I seem to be developing into a Wilson. Maybe I should start addressing people as "Neighbor". (Or not.)

Twas fun.

What a great night it was, all the sweated nicotine staining the back of my shirt notwithstanding.

I'm not sure whether I don't remember being punched in the head because of all the alcohol, or because of the punch in the head. I *did* wake up with a huge headache the next morning, I remember that much.

The highlight of the evening was definitely when 111 showed up, though. A real gentleman in real life, even if he did manage to trick everyone into buying him beer all night. What a storyteller he was!

A MeFi meetup here in Wisconsin? How is it possible that I was unaware of this? I better start reading the memos more carefully.

jonmc -- we actually were going to do some shoutouts, but got kind of distracted and forgot. Next time.

MrBaliHai -- there will be future gatherings. Count on it.
posted by aine42 at 8:39 AM on September 11, 2003

interrobang -- I am shocked that you do not remember the punch in the head. That (and the resulting argument between you and rocketman regarding the punch), along with the fact that it was 3:30 am and aine42 and I still had to drive back to Milwaukee, was pretty much what led to the end of the evening for aine42 and me. Punching (whether by me or by other people) pretty much signals the end of the evening's festivities for me. :)

Funny/strange how so many woke up the next morning with wicked or unpleasant "headaches." (And I'm being serious about that: The last few times I've had more than one drink at the Dane, I've become ill at some point within the next twelve hours. Methinks they've got problems with their taps and/or lines.) All the same, I'm sorry I missed it -- I forgot it was happening at all.

MrBaliHai: A MeFi meetup here in Wisconsin? How is it possible that I was unaware of this? I better start reading the memos more carefully.

I put together an e-mail list of all Madisonians and Milwaukeeans who had their zip codes in their profiles. I think that's how the meetup was announced closest to the actual date. A quick glance at your profile reveals you must be too good to put your zip code in there, so don't come whining to me!

(I hate putting disclaimers at the ends of posts, but past experience has shown me that I should say I'm just joking here...)

Gosh, now I feel kinda bad about it...
posted by rocketman at 9:42 AM on September 11, 2003

rocketman -- don't feel bad about the punching because it signaled the end of the evening's festivities. For me, when punching starts, that is a big red flag that enough drink has been had and it is best to end the evening before more punches are thrown. I think aine42 can verify that, in my case, it is better to call it a night when I start throwing punches. :)
posted by crystalblue at 10:04 AM on September 11, 2003

Most definitely.

And it wasn't just the punch. The fact that it was 3:30am kinda helped.
posted by aine42 at 10:06 AM on September 11, 2003

Exactly. It was 3:30 am and I had been up for close to 24 hours at that point.

A good proportion of shirts there! Is this the highest number of mefi-shirts ever documented in the same place at the same time?
