Why is Plastic down? September 25, 2003 3:52 PM   Subscribe

I realize this topic has nothing to do with Metafilter but, does anyone have any idea what has happened over at plastic.com? The site went dead on Tuesday night and I have been unable to get any information? Apologize about this, but would appreciate any information. Thanks in advance.

all the editors' fevered egos collapsed into a black hole and the site imploded?

(carl's still cool though.)

You left them at my house. In your pants.

The MeFi logo with the slogan "it's the plastic.com it's OK to like" made them all so upset they went home and cried.

Don't hate the player, dg. Hate the game.

Have you tried emailing carl@freedonia.com, MAYORBOB?

Mayor Bob has an obsession with Plastic I would say.

I think someone spiked the punch tonight here on Metafilter.
posted by crunchland at 8:13 PM on September 25, 2003

Guy -- I tried that yesterday and got a notice saying the email was not deliverable.

jason -- Yeah, I just keep burning up the lines here at Mefi over Plastic, don't I? A total of two posts on the subject in over two years.

http://chat.plastic.com/ is up.

"The topic for #plastic is: We don't know why, or when it will be back."

But ask anyway. They'll appreciate it.

I call dibs on the tagline...
MetaFilter: The plastic.com that still exists.
posted by wendell at 12:25 AM on September 26, 2003

What's wild is that if you go back to Sept 11th, 2001, Mayorbob's post on MeFi says "Plastic is down! Could this have something to do with today's events in New York?" or something like that. Is that not bizarre, or what!

BOB, has Plastic finally succumbed? I don't know; I spent the last week laid up from a heart attack.

I will note however the most obvious difference between Plastic and MetaFilter: Matt doesn't fuck with the infrastructure. If Plastic truly has expired, Carl has no one to blame but himself.

not seriously...?? if so, i'm extremely glad to see you!

Welcome back, mischief, glad you're still ticking.
From personal experience (CHF, not an attack), the worst thing about being laid up in a coronary ward is they didin't let me have anything high-tech enough to interfere with the monitors... no cel phone, no laptop (ceratingly no internet connection, therefore, no MeFi), they wouldn't even let me hook up my TiVo (or I would've brought home some cool shows from the Baby Channel)...

bshort -- Thanks for the info. If Plastic chat is still up then there's still hope, I guess. BTW, whenever I have tried to log onto Plastic chat using java, the dialog box compresses so that I can't communicate.

Tim -- Sorry to hear about your latest health difficulties. Hope you're back on your feet soonest.

I haven't laughed this hard over something on the Internet in months! Thanks, Stan...you should get a gold star for that (d'oh!).

migs: As you are not a plastic regular (that I know of), you may not know that my heart disease has often been the impetus for some of my more audacious antics. Being laid out gets really, really boring, and provides plenty of time to develop some real off-the-wall zingers.

Your sentiment however is much appreciated.

re: holgate, the last I knew he was cornered away in a private corner of plastic chat with nephie.

wendell: Same here. The worst (for me) is the day before the attack I had just bought a new laptop with all the fancy wireless you can stuff into one of those things. But nowadays, cardiac monitoring is also wireless (telemetry), so of course, my new toy had to sit at home. ;-(

From Plastic IRC:
Carl is making some major hardware/software adjustments. Since Carl is not a technical person, he finds a complete outage the easiest way to manage.

Tim,

Thanks for the copy and paste from Plastic IRC.

No prob, BOB!

Off on a tangent: The MeFi purists can scoff at Plastic, but BOB, you and I both are aware of how extensive the cross-population is between these two sites. ;-P
posted by mischief at 10:31 AM on September 26, 2003

I think the concern of the #plastic regulars was not so much that Plastic had expired, but that Carl had. Of course, if he had taken two seconds to write one line to one person (Such as "I'm busy working on it"), no one would have worried. Rather irritating, really.
posted by Shoeburyness at 10:37 AM on September 26, 2003

As one Plastitute astutely put it, "It's not Carl I'm worried about, it's Plastic!"
posted by mischief at 11:39 AM on September 26, 2003

Heh... I'd miss Plastic more than Carl, for sure-- but without Carl, there is no Plastic.

I'd just like to mention that Carl is a very nice man, who changed my long-dormant Plastic username to StavTheWonderChicken (as the 'ros' wouldn't fit) a while back, when I asked.

After which I made one comment, then sank back into the Meta-morass again.
