I’m not sure if this is a pony request or a bug report.... I often browse through AskMe by clicking repeatedly on the random button. On a desktop (using Chrome, modern theme), when I hit “back,” it takes me to last random thing I was looking at. On my phone (iPhone 8, modern theme), when I hit “back,” it takes me back to the last place I was before I started hitting the random button. Is this just me? I would prefer the desktop way. When I click "Random" to generate a random AskMe question, I'm constantly taken to this question about DVD commentary tracks. Why would this be the case? I probably hit it once every few days? It seems statistically unlikely with a random generator? [more inside]
From what I can tell, the last improvement to the Random option was allowing users to search for random posts within their favorites. I have always dreamed of having the option to pull up random AskMe questions within a specific category archive. (When I want to get my human relations fix on, I don't feel like wading through computer questions from 10 years ago.) Is this something that would be easy enough to implement? Is anyone else interested in this?
Would it be possible for the "Random" link to be included in mobile view? I like this feature a lot as it's a great way of finding cool FPPs from the past, and some old MeTas are just...wow. But to get to it I have to switch between the mobile and desktop views, which is a pain on my phone. On desktop it's between the "Popular" and "Best Of" links so could it be put there on mobile as well? Does anyone else even use it on a regular basis?
I would love to have a "random" button that is restricted only to my list of favorite posts. Is this feasible? [more inside]
I was just browsing AskMe via Random (great sport!) My finger was already clicking on Random again when I realized I still wanted to read it, so of course I got a new Random. I hit the back button and found out Random wasn't appending to my browser history! Please make Random leave footprints in my history like all the other links I click? [more inside]
An odd giveaway. A New York Area MeFite writes to us "I have two tickets to see the AMC Batman triple feature on July 19 in New York City. Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances I can't go anymore, so I thought I'd give them to you guys if you want to give them away." [more inside]
Steven Chu is not considering a bomb was one of the funniest things I've seen on this site in weeks. [more inside]
Hey guys, remember way back in 2005 when I had that AIM bot that let you talk to random people on the net? It melted down frequently due to some restrictions of the AIM network, and I lost interest in it. Apparently, the community didn't because people have MeMailed me about it since. I talked about doing a AJAX version, but never got around to it. So I thought you might like to hear that someone else did. [more inside]
Would it be possible to have the pop-out player in Metafilter Music play randomly? [more inside]
Pony request - auto ban for cracked.com posts [more inside]
We have a fandom post feature now, which of course is excellent. Now how about a random user feature? It could be called 'Get to Know A MeFite' or something like that. I think there are a lot of interesting user profile pages which many people have not and may not ever see, which is a shame, and this would be a potential way to highlight some of them. As an added bonus, this feature could lead to more Metafilter meet-ups as people stumble upon other users who they may not have known lived so close by. It could also lead people to explore their randomly chosen MeFite's posting history which may, in turn, lead many to discover several excellent (and awful) posts, questions and MeTa screeds which they may never have come across before.
What are the chances of getting a random result on the green, for setting as my homepage?
I think "random post" buttons for both AskMe and MeFi would be awesome. You would click on them and they would take you to a completely random post in their respective sections. They would function a lot like the "random article" link on Wikipedia. Not to mention - they'd be perfect for our ADD society.
Anyone with me?

My latest FPP might raise a few eyebrows and get called out here on MetaTalk. I just wanted to say here first therefore that I've left a trailing empty link at the post's conclusion on purpose. Yeah, I looked at the guidelines and I don't think this breaks the rules. And yes I have a legitimate reason for leaving the empty link, although I want to wait before disclosing what that is here on MetaTalk. I am doing this for the better of MeFi members however.
I realize this topic has nothing to do with Metafilter but, does anyone have any idea what has happened over at plastic.com? The site went dead on Tuesday night and I have been unable to get any information? Apologize about this, but would appreciate any information. Thanks in advance.
Eureka! A couple of weeks ago in this thread I pleaded for some help in setting up my browser so that it would load a random website each time I started it up. Now that I've cracked it, I thought I'd share the link with you as a thank you to all those who pitched in ... it loads mostly weblogs completely at random ...
I have Mefi set as my Home Page on IE but sometimes I wish I could just randomly have a different weblog (or website for that matter) each time I start the browser from a list I can specify (perhaps using a section in 'favourites' or a file on my hard disk). Is this possible? Anyone want to take a crack at it?
How about a link which will pull up a random thread from the archive?
As I'm too damn lazy to find good links or write witty comments, I'd be hoping for something like the Front Page Post Generator.
Blog of the Moment? Perhaps you could randomly cycle through the user database and highlight a blog every 10 minutes or so, like at the top of the sideblog. It may be a way to temper the urge to self-link.
I used to work as a P.R. in the music business, and I have a huge collection of concert tickets and "all areas" passes. I was also wondering what to do with them, maybe ticketstub would be the best repository, and public!
It’s boring, though.
