To further clear up any lingering confusion let me attempt to explain: The idea of a Orange McSwan burger was in reaction to this comment. The connection to Chuckles and Co. stemmed from my (perhaps incorrect) belief that it in Britain it is illegal to kill or eat swans unless you are part of the royal family (thus the very limited demographic for any such swan burger).

A quick google on the subject proved inconclusive, but it did turn up this:

The mysterious bond that exists between man and swan stretches back into antiquity and is celebrated in countless European myths and fairytales, but the mute swan's original value to our ancestors was more down-to-earth. From early times in Britain swans were kept in a semi-domesticated state as a source of food .......... In fact swans were such valuable commodities that by the end of the Middle Ages they were being marked as belonging to the Church or noblemen by special nicks carved onto their bills or feet. These identifying marks were registered with the Crown under the supervision of the Royal Swan Master, and all unmarked birds were considered property of the monarch. It was illegal to kill a 'royal' bird, and this may well have saved the species from being hunted to extinction in Britain.

Oh, and Is there any better job title in the world than 'Royal Swan Master'?

Matt, I've always wondered why posts to MetaTalk weren't on an approval basis. I understand why MetaFilter is a free-for-all, it works well that way, but MetaTalk posts are really site suggestions/problems that should be directed at you.

I know you don't have all the time in the world to admin this site, but wouldn't it be better for posts in MetaTalk to appear only if you think that they warrant discussion by the community? What about a /. or plastic.com style queue that let you seperate between problems you could address, problems the community should address and shit that doesn't belong here.

It would get rid of the chattiness of the section, I'd think.

Perhaps some people find issues of community more interesting than you do. Metatalk is, ostensibly at least, a place to discuss issues of the community. I don't think it necessarily follows that this means only pressing issues are up for discussion.

I'm certainly all for the deletion of pointless metatalk threads, but I don't think limiting it strictly to grievous issues of etiquette and technical glitches is necessary. The occasional how-do-you-feel-about-this thread doesn't hurt anyone, appeals to what is apparently a healthy number of people who post here, and would be easy enough to curtail if it became to rampant.

I hate to be seen as kissing the boss's butt here, but come on. If you (or most everyone else here) have credentials that display interest in 'issues of community' that are anything approaching the gravitas of Matt's (noting along the way the light touch and lessons learned in how he's managed to guide this ship of fools for 4 years and more now), I'd love to see them.

I'm talking about some of the more frivilous inanities--as some people may seem them--of communities that someone like Miguel likes to discuss (you know, why people act certain ways, how it affects them); that sort of thing. In retrospect, I probably phrased it poorly, but I think my point is sound. Mr. Haughey obviously isn't as interested in this, as he commented on keeping these issues to "pressing" ones.

Also, I'll make clear that I'm separating pointless, self-referential threads about McJokes, and simple questions for other members that would be better reserved for e-mails, from the aforementioned trivialities of community that some of us might be interested in. I would support a harsher approach to the moderation of the former (time willing), but I don't think the latter is all bad.

I'm sure some of you disagree, and I'm thoroughly ok with that ;)

posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 5:05 PM on November 12, 2003

Maybe I wasn't clear before but I'm interested in the whys and hows of the community, it's just that threads often speak to those goals after 15 or 20 posts, and after 50, you'd be lucky if it's not some total goof-off thread like this one.

I can delete any post I want, and I seldom do because there is at least some merit to most of them in the original form, though whenever I'm away for a couple days I'm surprised at the ones that do get posted and get commented on. My point is that much of metatalk is now just chating and making jokes or posting funny photos and that's healthy for the small devoted fans of the community that engage in it, but I don't think those types of posts speak ot any larger community needs or goals.

I guess at the most basic level, I'm seeing several metatalk threads a week become the 1142 and 9622 threads and even though those former fun zones spun off their own communities, and IRC has lended a real-time play area to the site, there's still a high level of chattiness going on. It seems there needs to be a third "parlor" type place for people to interact, or I need to make the IRC area more prominent or something.

posted by MiguelCardoso at 6:21 PM on November 12, 2003

That's a fair assessment, Matt, but it's hard to strike a balance between all-out academic prose and having some sort of bond with fellow members, isn't it? I mean, I suppose some people would be perfectly happy if we stuck strictly to hardline logical arguments and agreements, but there are some of us (I assume I'm not the only one) who enjoy that personal touch, or the occasional comedic relief.

The parlor idea is certainly an interesting one, one that I've actually considered before. It would be interesting--of that there is no doubt. But I wonder, would it take anything away from this site (both blue and grey, respectively)? When a thread in the grey degenerates (or evolves) into an occasionally mindless, but sometimes funny, back-and-forth, does it actually depreciate the value of what was originally discussed?

Also, I'll reiterate something I've said before: I'd be all for the axing of threads such as this one, which crop up when you're off for the weekend or whathaveyou, even if they've already eclipsed the century mark.

In other words, when it's looking most dark and dire and the shit is gonna hit the fan, we get more serious ... or we get more silly. I'm not sure which.

It would make MeTa easier to monitor, and I'd think a MetaParlour wouldn't take much monitoring because it would be an anything goes sort of place where MeFites can just have fun. Or have some really bitchin' pun wars. In any case it's plain the MeFi kids need a backyard in which to run wild or they'll just keep trashing the interior of the house. Not that I'm pointing fingers. I've broken my share of lamps.

As discretely suggested by orange swan, there absolutely must be a U in Parlour, though. Otherwise, I'm against it.

how about MetaDen?

You're fighting human nature any time you try to compartmentalize human thought. Play is a big part of any human interaction. I'm not saying that Metafilter is the place for it; just that it won't neatly go away just because it's not welcome.

(When the server is hosted in France, maybe, Miguel!)

Brainstorming suggestions here:

MetaLockerRoom

MetaBoudoir

MetaSalon

MetaBackAlley

MetaLounge

MetaNook

MetaRumpusRoom

MetaCellar

MetaAnteroom

MetaGallery

MetaPeanutGallery

MetaMezzanine

MetaLevee

MetaAtrium

MetaForum

MetaCranny

MetaSanctum

MetaCommons

MetaCavity

I'm sure I could come up with more, but as that last one suggests, it's probably all down here from here.

Gallantly as we may fight for "our" cause, Migs, I'm sure Matt will decide in favour of MetaParlor if it comes to that. But all is not lost. I cling to my Canadian/British spellings of things in my own comments, no matter how many times the spell checker may try to correct me in its smarmy, ethnocentric American way.

Oh, and rush, I do think the creation of a open chat area would help clean up MeTa just as MeTa has helped clean up the blue. It won't be perfect but it will be better. We can handle compartmentalization, it's just that the appropriate compartments need to be there.

I like MetaCellar.

But already I'm looking forward to the first MetaParlour post suggesting a new area be created - a no-holes-barred MetaCage, where anything goes - to clean up the pink*, which cleaned up the grey that cleaned up the blue.

*MetaParlour's got to be pink, right?

MetAbattoir?

Damn, mischief, I thought I had all the good ones.

Migs, if we go with a "no-holes-barred MetaCage" I don't think I'll be visiting it. I expect people to respect my holes.

But as an Visual Arts (part-time) student, perhaps I can suggest some good colours:

A MetaParlour would definitely have to be pink - let's say a nice tasteful rose tone.

MetAbattoir would have to be blood red.

MetaRumpusRoom would have to be Shag Carpeting Green.

MetaCavity would probably be black.

I'd be more than willing to contribute Metalifter.com to be the MetaParlour. I'm currently seriously underutilizing the bandwidth on my hosting account that encompasses it AND WendellWit.com. I already set up a MeFi-like front page (in brown) to use, but the Comments function in my non-standard blogging software (Nucleus CMS) has near-fatal bugs in handling HTML and timestamping. And we'll need a way to manage membership... Administrator, please hope me!
All I ask is the right to put up the first topic: What questions should appear on a "MetaFilter Purity Test"?

We can handle compartmentalization, it's just that the appropriate compartments need to be there.

It's the lack of presence of all compartments that I was referring to, so I agree. Even a tech support site develops some aspects of community over time, and they don't set out to define themselves as a "community" from the outset.

I'd be more than willing to contribute Metalifter.com to be the MetaParlour [sic].

Unless it could be integrated with Metafilter as closely as MetaTalk, I don't think this would serve the intended function. We've seen that such spin-off sites don't work. 9622, IRC, TribeNet...only a few dedicated folks ever make it over there, and fewer stay around. If it did get the official tie-in of official blessing, however, it might become popular enough to have the desired effect.

I was thinking it's like organizing a closet or a room in your home. I have a junk drawer in my kitchen for all the extra stuff that is really useful but that doesn't belong anywhere else. Maybe if there got to be too much of one kind of thing, I'd have to move it to a cabinet or a shelf in the laundry room. That's sort of what's happened to MeTa - it has a definite purpose, but other stuff has clogged it up. So, it's a good idea to transfer some of that stuff to another drawer of its own. And people will respect that organization fairly well.

Oh yeah. It needs to be on the menu to work. I didn't even know about IRC until mathowie mentioned it above.

And the [sic] is very cute, rushie.

So who gets to clean out the Catbox?
posted by languagehat at 5:15 PM on November 13, 2003

I once had three cats, hat, which required me to clean the catbox so often that I had to quit my job. (So, not me. And jinx on the duplicate time stamp, btw.)
posted by taz at 5:21 PM on November 13, 2003

Wasn't Mr. Jinx a cat in an early Hanna-Barbera cartoon?

And, since Matt tends to ignore very long MeTa threads, shouldn't somebody tell him the direction(s) we've taken his "parlor" suggestion since he made it?
