When to Post December 25, 2003 9:00 PM Subscribe
How important, with MeFi or Meta posts and comments, are extraneous factors like time, caffeine, midwork intervals or alcohol? Is there really a before and after coffee; a morning and late night inflection; according to how long you've been up and what you've ingested to get through the day? I think there is. Is the time-stamp your best counsellor and friend? Specially considering the wildly disparate time-zones? No names mentioned; just saying. In my humble opinion, the hour (and the perceived condition or, more generally, circumstances) says as much as the name. If not more.
Huh? *hic* lisshen buddy, I'll opst anythinn i want to aaand it dronk matter if I'nm dunk or not.
(Okay, in all seriousness, anybody who says those things never affect their posting style either doesn't come here very often, or is some sort of cyborg.)

I have only begun posting, and only when drunk or at work. Same thing, really. The time stamp is meaningless, and I am sure it only applies to those who argue about American politics.

I work third shift (for another week anyway), and that seriously fucks with any kind of routine sleep schedule. I am usually rushing on caffeine from 8 pm to 6 am, crashing from the high until 10 am, and then knocked unconscious by Ambien from noon on.

judging by the time stamp of your post, miguel, you either feel very frisky in the early morning hours, or you've been up all night drinking Portuguese eggnog...

I have to apologize for most posts made by me around 3pm weekdays Australian time - about the time I'm getting sick and tired of work and feel like "having a go" at someone on Metafilter. It's usually about the time of day I start dreaming of a peaceful anarchist utopia, and come down particularly hard on conservative types. Similarly, I should apologize for some late night and weekend posts, when I've got a few drinks in me. You can usually disregard any post by me with glaring typos or messed up words. The time-zone thing is funny though, isn't it? When I'm usually at my PC, Metafilter is kind of dead. When I wake up the next day, the front page has flooded with posts that have appeared and fizzled out in the night.

Would it be better if everyone's post had *their* posting time put on it? This post could say "posted at 14:20 GMT" - taking the GMT from my preferences page.
Of course, i can see that being a lot of work.

Matt's out of town WOOO!
[sticks dick in the mashed potatoes]
I post when I can, which is during 1st coffee, mid-afternoon at work, and sometimes in the evening. I have eased up on the evening drinking in past months and have found myself in (slightly) fewer altercations and those of (noticeably) lower pitch. My morning posts, like this one, are v e r y slowly composed and often meandering.
I second djacobs suggestion and will be happy to join you by your virtual hearth for eggnog and chat, Miguel.

Miguel - I'm not sure, or - rather - I AM sure that you're right overall. But you really liked this "comment" of mine (a short story of sorts, really). You may have missed my subsequent post on that thread :
"MrBaliHai - Well, no. That was a different ex-girlfriend who - when I met her, was working as a farrier - shoeing horses, that is. I hope the other ex-girlfriend doesn't read that little bit I just wrote there and kick my ass.
Plep - I'm glad. I blame it on a nip of "Yukon Jack" chased by a 40oz bottle of Bush beer.....
Miguel - Thanks. That means a lot, coming from you......"
Perhaps I'm just repressed, or tightly wound.

No matter what I ingest or how many naps I take, this post still remains pointless. Though while drunk it was pointless and I just couldn't work my keyboard to reply.

I've figured out the point of this thread, thus:
Since the site does not allow a new MeFi FPP until 24 hours after the last one, and the most prolific of posters mumble mumble Miguel can't post anything until 24 hours and a few minutes, inevitably the 'time slippage' results in being forced to do your FFPs at inconvenient or awkward times. With a little statistical analysis an obsessive-compulsive MeFite mumble mumble Miguel could determine which hours of the day/night at which to do posts about Music, Food & Drink, Philosophy, Art, Way-Too-Personal-Stuff or Headline News while getting the most positive comment-attention and the least negative. And a pony.

Napalm? Yeah, had it at Thanksgiving Dinner with my in-laws three years ago (either that or over-microwaved canned gravy... pretty much the same thing).

Well he once killed a man with a guitar string
He's been seen at the table with kings
Well he once saved a baby from drowning
There are those who say beneath his coat there are wings

Keychains? Licorice? HA! - Some can kill through deftly applied guilt.
It's the delicacy of the method which establishes the artistry - the use of minimal force or effort. Some rumours have it that the The Way of Emotional Assasination contains methods for murder by annoyance. This is apocryphal me though, as I can't find a copy anywhere.
