Maybe some html tags should be disabled. August 6, 2004 11:26 AM   Subscribe

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to disable some HTML tags to prevent ...poster shock as it were. I've noticed the 'comment by x' nested inside a comment by 'y' in several threads already, and there seems little to prevent a similar slight of hand on an actual FPP. Too nitpicky?

a recent (admittedly rather flagrant) test case to meta bore out my assumptions (as at least one Mefite can attest). Is community self-monitoring enough to prevent such kinds of abuse?

it's a very old trick, easily spotted, everyone has seen it before. if you actually look, the small font does not match, and matt strips "class=" so the font can't be made to look authentic.

nothing to see here.

Well, it's no bucket of cocks, Stainless, but I still appreciate you taking the time to insult.

We should disable the ability to end div tags, because I hate it when you bastards do that.

I saw it, thought it was pretty convincing, especially since on my screen it was sized so that I couldn't see the real user information at the bottom. The next second it was gone though..mathowie's friggin quick.

the only difference I could see is the font color in the 'posted by' section, which could be duped up by img files, right?

Imagine the link then pointing you to say 'www.metafllter.com' (that's two lls and currently unregistered) and a fake page with faux Matt pleading for funds ...a paypal button on the side

...but then I maybe think a little too much about these things

dude, trotsky, if someone wants to go to that trouble of spoofing any site, there's always going to be a way to do it.

Currently, it's fairly clear when people attempt to fake it (even using an image wouldn't match a user's font settings), and it's pointed out everytime.

I'll add a check to remove div close tags through, but otherwise I think this is much ado about nothing.

If it comes up in the wild and I need to do something more about it, I will.

People could just do the same thing in an image anyway.

sleight. not slight. sleight.

e.g., "Through a nimble sleight of hand, the prestidigitator turned the bucket of cocks into a bucket of writhing, delicious pike."

it's pointed out everytime

that's quite the assertion.

that's quite the assertion.

No one has been fooled by it yet. Whenever anyone does a double-take, someone points out that it was faked.

And if this goes to the world of images, and it gets out of hand, eventually images will be banned.

if images are banned, then only bands will have images?

Sorry, but we've only pointed out the fakes that we've noticed. The fakes that got by unnoticed were not, naturally, pointed out.

For instance, this "five fresh fish" user has actually been a continuous, unnoticed series of fakes. Note how quonsor always has a post in the same thread? He is a sly monkey!
