Any chance of another NYC shindig before 2005? Y'know, for those of us who missed Jucylicious' visit?

Will there be killing? I'll come.

we were planning some time before christmas so i guess planning now is better than nothing.

sure...how about the week before Xmas?

(and there'll only be killing if paris actually shows) ; >

I'll come but it really depends on the date, and as of right now I am not sure which of the two weekend days I am going to be busy.

Hooray! My first shindig! Count me in.
posted by 4easypayments at 10:25 PM on December 3, 2004

Please not the week before Christmas. My birthday party is already the 17th and it got moved there because my boss's Xmas party is the 18th.

On a more general level, it's a bad idea to try to plan things that week. There are already 8000 parties and it never works out as well as you hope. Trust me. I've been trying to have parties around then for 25 years now.

What about the weekend before? That is, this upcoming Friday or Saturday?

Why the hell not.

We just had an impromptu mini-meetup for my birthday. Pictures were taken.
posted by jonmc at 6:57 AM on December 4, 2004

That was a meetup? No it wasn't.
posted by Adam Greenfield at 7:35 AM on December 4, 2004

So you're saying you don't want any holliday presents? Okay.(scratches name off list)
posted by Smart Dalek at 7:35 AM on December 4, 2004

It kinda was. Also, last night, I ate a salad for the first time.
posted by jonmc at 7:49 AM on December 4, 2004

In that case, you're definately not getting any candy!
posted by Smart Dalek at 7:53 AM on December 4, 2004

NYC meetup! Where do these things happen? How 'bout a late afternoon/early evening Sunday (perhaps less likely to conflict with other parties)? Count me in!
posted by fingers_of_fire at 8:01 AM on December 4, 2004

I already have possible office parties on the 15th and 16th but any other day (preferrably not bordering those two, of course) would probably be fine with me.
posted by cyrusdogstar at 10:47 AM on December 4, 2004

Well, why not next weekend? And, I think that an announcement of some sorts is a requirement for meetup status.
posted by adampsyche at 11:24 AM on December 4, 2004

Now that I'm able to participate, I'd love to meet some of you.

yay. :)
posted by clubfoote at 11:49 AM on December 4, 2004

Aren't there a few Mefi birthdays this month? I know Dame's is coming up and so is amberglow's. Mine is the 28th. How about a birthday meetup? Not sure if I can make it, but any reason to meetup.......
posted by Juicylicious at 12:03 PM on December 4, 2004

I can probably come, depending on the time. Will watch this thread

juicy: mine just was, and jon's too.

thanks for the gift, btw ; P

Oh, it'll be fun to meet newbies, so definitely come, you new folk--we ran out of virgin sacrifices ages ago.

awesome! I get to be fed to the Lions. Called it. [/sticksouttounge]

Do Sunday nights work? How about the 12th?
posted by Vidiot at 3:02 PM on December 4, 2004

I'd love to finally try and make one of these. (No dates necessarily better or worse for me, but life can often intrude. I'll make it if I can.)
posted by LairBob at 4:01 PM on December 4, 2004

Ok, this is the point in the thread that someone has to nail down a date. Next weekend? Can anyone make it on a Sunday night (I can), or do we do Fri. or Sat.?

Next, we can discuss a place.
posted by adampsyche at 4:36 PM on December 4, 2004

I can make it for an hour or two Saturday or Sunday but Friday is not so hot. I vote East Village because the L or JMZ trains are best for me and because someone has to start suggesting areas and places. Sophie's Bar on Ave. A and 5th is nice and so is DBA on 1st Ave between 2nd and 3rd.
posted by idest at 8:38 PM on December 4, 2004

How does 6-7-ish Sunday the 12th sound? And East Village has worked well before. DBA has worked well in the past, as have the Cherry Tavern, Veselka, and a few other places.
posted by Vidiot at 8:48 PM on December 4, 2004

Not DBA. Last time, they turned some of us away for lack of ID, and I can't guarantee I'll have a new one by then. What about tile bar?
posted by dame at 10:35 PM on December 4, 2004

Tile Bar's a little small and cramped for a meetup, unless it's damn near empty.
posted by Vidiot at 11:56 PM on December 4, 2004

Here's another vote for Sunday, and can we have it at the Ear Inn?
posted by lilboo at 6:28 AM on December 5, 2004

The Ear on Sunday works for me... and uh, what about afternoon as opposed to evening?
posted by idest at 8:16 AM on December 5, 2004

aw, the ear inn is one of my old childhood memory places... but it gets a bit crowded. The Fish Bar, on 5th street off 2nd ave, is cute and somehow a strange fluctuation in the east village-weekend continuum in that it's quite uncrowded most of the time. Mostly just a few old locals, typa thing.

Are we talking a week from today?

How about Rififi?
posted by nicwolff at 8:50 AM on December 5, 2004

Afternoon after 3 or so sounds good. (I'm going on the Forgotten NY walking tour before that.)
posted by Vidiot at 11:36 AM on December 5, 2004

I don't understand the concept of having a meetup in the afternoon.
posted by bingo at 12:37 PM on December 5, 2004

The Magician on Rivington & Essex would be good. It's owned by the Tile Bar folk and features the same cheap booze and excellent jukebox (any juke that has both "Same Stone" and "You're A Better Man Than I" is good, right?), plus it's more spacious with more tables.
posted by jonmc at 12:55 PM on December 5, 2004

I don't understand the concept of having a meetup in the afternoon.

1) To get advance ideas for the evening.
2) To provide a valid reason for having one's picture taken while still wearing dark sunglasses.
3) Latecomers feel guilty arriving after sunset.
4) Try getting a fresh hot dog from a vendor cart after 9pm.
posted by Smart Dalek at 1:24 PM on December 5, 2004

5) You can drink for longer.

And the Magician sounds good.
posted by Vidiot at 1:26 PM on December 5, 2004

5) You can drink for longer.

....well, OKAY then.
posted by bingo at 2:06 PM on December 5, 2004

So, 12 December, 3 p.m., the Magician. All bearing presents for at least one of the birthtees.
posted by dame at 2:12 PM on December 5, 2004

I hate to spoil the suspense, but my present will be a beer, and it will be first come first serve.
posted by bingo at 2:43 PM on December 5, 2004

Citysearch entry on The Magician.
posted by jonmc at 4:07 PM on December 5, 2004

...and it dosen't open until 5pm, iirc.
posted by jonmc at 4:07 PM on December 5, 2004

Could we make The Magician a second stop?
I really don't feel like standing outside while screaming "Abracadabra! Appear, already!" for two hours.
posted by Smart Dalek at 4:33 PM on December 5, 2004

I don't see why not.
posted by jonmc at 4:46 PM on December 5, 2004

No, but have you considered that others might enjoy observing from a bar across the street while you do that?
posted by bingo at 4:47 PM on December 5, 2004

We could gather at Dempsey's. It's on 2nd Ave, between 3rd & 4th, is open from noon, and is fairly spacious in back.
