Askme: rein it in, please December 11, 2004 4:54 PM   Subscribe

Can we please be done asking questions that aren't actually questions already?

I think we should call the green "JeopardyFilter". I'm sorry, can you phrase that as a question?

What is, "Get Your Own Damn Blog"?

Yo, you can't play along in both threads Doohickie... one or the other.

Not much effort at all taken to obscure the fact that it was just an excuse to offer an unsolicited opinion and try and start a chat about it.

And you know what they say about assholes and opinions.

Thumbs down.

Well, now, you open up the site to anybody with a Paypal account and a fiver, and don't issue smackdowns regularly to keep the n00bs in line, and this is the shit you get.

Reap the whirlwind, people. Reap the fucking whirlwind.

Saucy's not a real n00b, for what that's worth. I think the "question" is fine, though. The real solution, which I understand is coming soon, is better categorization and archive management.

Yeah, that post is more appropriate for Craig's List rants and raves than AskMe.

Can we please remember to actually ask the question on the front page and not just make some vague mention of the topic and allude to [more inside]?

I think people are hoping by forcing people to click on the comments to even see the question, they'll get more responses. In actuality, it's freaking irritating. Just ask!

I don't bother clicking those links.

Maj, you should put a link to MeTa in the question thread. If only one person learns that AskMe is a precious and fragile flower that must be protected, it'll be worth it. This has been happening way too often lately.

Can we please remember to actually ask the question...

Sorry, bonheur, I should have mentioned that the problem was with audio specifically, but I thought it was a larger problem and knowing that 95% of people use Windows I took it inside to save space on the AskMe front page.

"Maj, you should put a link to MeTa in the question thread"

Done.

Except I'm not Maj.

I hope that's all right.

Maj, no. Magical, yes.

Ah, but is he magically delicious?

It's all right, crash. Everything's going to be all right now.

It's a real question, as to whether he thinks he's singing or it's part of the variety show tradition. I'd be interested to know myself.

(not that he's that bad)

This may have been a veiled attempt to express an opinion, but I have always wondered the same thing. Kept checking back tonight to see if anyone posted a real explanation. Food for thought.

Wanna bet?

Cryptical Envelopment: It's much more useful to ask your question, briefly, on the front page, and then include further information inside. For example, you could have asked: "Why are Windows Media Video files silent on my OSX Mac?" Which is much better than saying: "Problem with WMV and OSX on Mac regarding audio specifically."

See?

"Dad, I.. I think I've had my first Metatalk callout!"
"Son, it's completely natural, and it happens to lots of kids your age."

Don't worry, I'm not going to go apeshit at Matt for canning my Garrison Keillor question, but I submit for the record that it was a real question and not posted in bad faith. Granted, it's no "fab-4 - what does it mean? Is that where Intel made the 4004?", but that kind of ideal is tough to shoot for when one has finals next week.

So I'll do the responsible thing now and flame majcher for starting the metatalk thread.

Make sure you apologize after a while and start posting comments with cute little attempts at humor to comfort your bruised ego. Christ, it's windy out today.

Right before we had that crazy make-up sex. Don't you remember?

About an hour before your crazy make-up sex with EB, and just before your cute little attempts at humor to comfort your bruised ego ended with me giving you homemade cookies and covering you with a plaid tartan as you fell gently asleep. (and - shame on you, EB!!)

"is that what they call pity sex these days ?"

A specific variety thereof, yes. Not in general, though.
