The title of the AskMe page reads "Announce Metafilter" February 5, 2005 9:34 AM   Subscribe

While I'm as excited as anyone about announce.metafilter.com, I wonder if the fact that the title of the ask.metafilter.com page reads "Announce Metafilter" is a bug?

Blargh. I see this has been mentioned before... (thanks sebas)

((grumblegrumble))

Well, while we're reiterating what's been said before, in a thread Matt will probably read and delete for redundancy, I still want to suggest tell.metafilter.com (TellMe) as an alternate name.

The red is awesome.

I like that there will now be a MeFi section without a double-post problem . . .

I was thinking MetaJobs was gonna be the red.
posted by abcde at 10:16 AM on February 5, 2005

Shouldn't MetaJobs be HireMe?

TellMe is like, totally, a thousand million times better. For serious.

And the red is hideous.

please reconsider the red

aw, I like the red. It's time we had red, isn't it? We need a warm color, at least.

But red's my favorite color, so I'm biased. I agree it would be a bit intense for a page you visit all the time, but TellMe is less likely to be so intensely full of new stuff everyday, isn't it? How many times a year is the average member gonna have a project they feel is worth posting there? I think it'll be less than how many times they get curious about dog thoughts or pissed off at each other, or come across an interesting article online.

I like the red until I navigate away from the page. Then I can still see the red. And it's creepy.

{ketchup}

yeah, actually the yellow links on red do mcdonaldize it a little... I wonder if the link color could be shifted a bit (to more like peach, maybe?) to counterbalance that.

Umm.. hello people? It hasn't been finished yet. Runtime errors happen in such circumstances.
posted by Saucy Intruder at 11:09 AM on February 5, 2005

love the red -- but is it a trap? like we're incouraged to self-link and then we get instantly banned?
posted by matteo at 11:18 AM on February 5, 2005

On this olde iMac, the red is colour-vague and annoying. Guess it's time to upgrade....

The red literally made me flinch. It is harsh, Baby.

I dig the red, but red is one of my faves too so I'll just hang here in the red corner with mdn. ;)

Whats ok to post there then? Anything one is setting up/have set up? Nice pony. Nice red pony.
posted by dabitch at 12:15 PM on February 5, 2005

I'm dabitch and mdn on the red. I like! And "TellMe" is inspired.

A question: I notice that the blurb in the top right hand corner simply says "no links since your last visit" and not "no links and no comments"- is this page link-only? I would imagine that some people might post things seeking feedback, and that some of that feedback could be instructive to others working on similar or related projects, so to allow for comments might enhance the usefulness for everyone.

But I realize it might add more complexity than Matt intended.

Consider this another vote in favor of "TellMe" -- really just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?

*with* dabitch and mdn. I previewed, really, I did.

As long as metafilter never adopts slashdot's baby shit on white theme I'm a happy man.
posted by shepd at 12:40 PM on February 5, 2005

And on a side note, I'm guessing a consistent top nav bar will be showing up on announce.metafilter.com soon, right? It's a bit disorienting at present without any nav cues.
posted by killdevil at 12:43 PM on February 5, 2005

I'll put in another vote for "TellMe". I just like the way it comes across.

I played around with a version of the MeFi Classic Logo in order to
a) Demonstrate variations on the red color and
b) Promote "Tell MetaFilter" as the name...

Here's the red Matt used: approximately #8B1F1F:

And something a little lighter (#CC3333)

And a slightly darker "browser-safe" maroon (#990000)

Here's an even-lighter peach variation (#FF5555)

And, just to show that it could be worse... orange (#FF6633)

I prefer Wendell's "browser-safe" maroon, personally... the current red looks too much like tomato soup to me. (Possibly I just need to adjust my monitor. Or am I hungry? I can't tell.)

I'm going to redesign it in the new winning design later this weekend, and it will be a couple shades of maroon for accent colors.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 1:12 PM on February 5, 2005

Well, I rather like the color since it looks like the shade I chose for my user page. Of course, I do not see it often...

I like the red, and a vote for TellMe
posted by nile_red at 1:44 PM on February 5, 2005

Yeah, red is my favorite color so I generally always like it, but the current red is LOUD. A darker red would be good. (My very favorite color is the rich, dark but somehow bright red that's the color of fresh blood.)

Tell.Me -> Teal -> #006666 -> For example (with white text and links in various "#ccXXXX" yellows)

MeFi Projects is probably as good as it can get. For the millionth time, it won't be called TellMe.

Too bad. It's a way better name than either of the two you've come up with.

This is what happens when you back down Matt. We all start thinking like we can change your mind if we keep pushing the issue.

TELL ME!
posted by Quartermass at 6:42 PM on February 5, 2005

Whether or not there's a "Tell Metafilter" logo in the upper corner, I think the damage has already been done, and many people are going to start calling MeFi Projects "TellMe" despite Matt's distaste for the term (similar to the "FPP" issue). Sorry Matt.
posted by DaShiv at 6:55 PM on February 5, 2005

Exactly, DaShiv. Anybody remember "Not Doctor Street" at the beginning of Song of Solomon? I see that happening. If it's not "TellMe," it will be "Not TellMe."

It might not be named TellMe, but I doubt you'll have much control over what it's called :)
