Not really very pleasant at all....I'm not sure if singling someone out is the best thing to do, but there's no email address on his profile, the URL is dead, and all of his comments have been like this of late... we all have bad weeks, but this just stuff is just pointless.
Is it worth noting, or am I being too much of a schoolmarm?

Blah blah blah.
I really don't see the point of posting in a thread you find boring. That's why, for the most part, I don't even read 70% of the threads anymore.

I vote schoolmarm. Sorry, Stavros.

all of these comments are on a par with the "booga-booga" debacle, IMO. obnoxious at best.

starvo....

welcome to metafilter

This site is built upon the idea that your thoughts are only as good as the few days they are on the "front page".

This is right on par given the "holier than thou" attitude here. I applaud statements like this because they are exactly what this - and I use this term very loosely - "community" works for and fosters. This place is just another flame war with the exception that people use words with more than 3 syllables when they say F___ __U. When I see comment like this, I laugh.

Frankly, the only reason I come to this site is to watch people shit on each other and to see which is the comment deletion du jour. Which will probably be this one, by the way. One out of, say, every 50, links will raise my eyebrow. The rest of them, all I can say is "tell me something I don't already know".

No offense though Starvo. Really. I just had to chime in.

This place is just one, long, slow train wreck. I'm gonna miss it when it is gone. Which, mind you, I hope won't be for a long time because it is just too amusing.

Well, I guess it is time for a new UID as this one will be deleted soon.

and to think, I actually gave money to this site a long time ago.

The line is kinda hard to draw, but I'm gonna go with Stavros on this one. Pointless comments like these should be politely called out and discouraged so that everybody knows what is/is not a "good" post here.

Ah, I was wondering how long it was going to take PrivateParts to find a new IP address.

why not just email the guy instead of calling him out here? It's not like he was really going off///
posted by chaz at 4:41 PM on September 9, 2001

chaz: Because while emailing Satapher might change his behavior, it has no effect on the community at large. People complain a lot about the repetitive navel-gazing that goes on in Metatalk, but this is the only way that we're going to establish any sort of community norms. Metafilter is made up entirely of posts... how would you expect us to establish a community with rules and customs? More posts, of course.
posted by gd779 at 5:59 PM on September 9, 2001

Chaz -- Satapher didn't provide a way to contact him via e-mail.

and to think, I actually gave money to this site a long time ago.

Now that you're holding the money over Matt's head, let us know how to reimburse you. I'd be glad to pony up a few bucks for the "pay off the troll" fund.

Gee, rodii, I must be part of the "asshole sector" (along with, I'd guess, about 80% of MetaFilter's population.).

I don't know what keeps me coming back here more:
(a) The pissing matches, or
(2) Hearing the "old timers" whining about "how MetaFilter used to be/should be".

Seems to me that last one should be read with knowledge that it was a very stressful day for many people. Don't hold it against Satapher too hard.

In fact, the sentiment of the last few words "be happy you're all alive..." is one I share.

this is a quiet thread. i miss my friends.

I hear you, and I'm sorry. But, you know...maybe there's more to life (and MeFi) than watching people shit on each other after all.

Ever since reading that MetaFilter parody its been hard not to see it as just that. a perfectly cyclical redundant system of the same comments over and over.

if trying to say "hey, youre all saying the same thing about microsoft (or whatever) over and over and over, try changning your angle" is considered pointless...

There's always the main way of thinking and the alternate way of thinking, and quite frankly the alternate way is usually just as popular as the mainstream way.

and the alternate thinkers tend to outcast any other alternate way of thinking as much as the mainstreamers do to them.

A terrible tragedy has taken place recently, and it wasn't 10 minutes before the inane bickering started. Regardless of the thousands of those now gone.

If challeging the thought processes and switching angles on subjects is something to be looked down upon, something that im "at again" - then whats the point?

would it be much better if the only division we had on this board was that of Democrats/Republicans and Other?

apart from the "blah" posts (which im sure took place on the ppan of maybe a bad day or two) I dont see how any of the posts are wrong at all. but even those posts were getting the point across... repetitiveness of opinions. where are the real alternate opinions? how different can some of us really think out things?

they do go against the "metafilter grain" but all the statements are undirected (and usually stated as such) and not meant to do anything more than possibly try to get at least someone to stop and look at something another way or at least stimulate some aspect, or at least to go take a walk and get away from the computer to gather your thoughts.

i dont think i was "really going off" as chaz agreed.

my e-mail is now satapher@home.com - i initially left it off however long ago i registered to avoid spam.

the website is just old... ill put it back up eventually.

well, yah.

and i find it really depressing that on such a terrible day last tuesday, two people went out of their way to post me "going at it again".

depressing and scary.
