Besides the fact that there's a perfectly active thread over here, the front page is not the place for your barely coherent rants exclusively populated with Google links.

I'd actually love to see Matt nuke all of the Schiavo posts at this point. It's newsfilter, boring newsfilter, inflammatory newsfilter, repetitive newsfilter, and none of our fucking business newsfilter. This one is the well needed straw.

Off to flag...

This is simply a remarkable troll. How else to explain the opening sentence:

"I was listening to a talk radio station last night, and a guy called in and said that he heard on FOX News"

a) talk radio
b) FOX News
c) hearsay supposition

I mean, it's easy to see, it's obvious, it's probably time for the banhammer.

weblog as conversation... The links in this post show a different angle than any that's been presented here. I checked. The google links show that there are abundant/redundant sources for this side of the story. If this story is something worth discussing, this is an angle worth considering. If this post seemed like a troll, then there is some nuance missing somewhere. The post was meant to seem outrageous, because I think that style nicely frames the "debate", it all just seems out of whack and wrong from the beginning.

That was my point. That's something to consider.
posted by airguitar at 8:34 AM on March 24, 2005

You could have made that point in one of the other threads, I reckon. Also, I'm not sure that it's news that there's a great deal of misleading and contradictory information out in the blogosphere.

The google links show that there are abundant/redundant sources for this side of the story.

1. One problem may be that Google is a little... vast. You might consider whittling down your position to a few, genuinely interesting, succinct links that we can parse through.

2. As anapestic notes, your post is probably more appropriate in many of the other Schiavo threads that are still boiling over
posted by AlexReynolds at 8:39 AM on March 24, 2005

Wow. Not being in the U.S., I find all this Terri Schiavo media fascination especially macabre and bizarre... Also bizarre, the recent realization (via MeFi) that the Lacey Peterson (sp? too lazy to look up) case was especially significant because of the fact that she was pregnant, and that the huge public interest was possibly all connected to "right-to-life" anti-abortion stuff somehow. As a mostly American site, MeFi is particularly enlightening in its obssesions and compulsions, however bewildering. (Which is not an argument in favor of the horribly doomed post cited here — just a useless comment from one who has been seeing this subject rise up like a rash covering the entire internet, and who feels she must finally say something along the lines of w. t. f. ?)

1. I liked the google-effect, but I see your point

2. I could concede someday, just between you and me, that indeed this was my mistake. I guess I put it on the front page to stand out clearly. I like all y'all, but I had no idea, from reading here, that this is was the Right has ready for anyone who supports her peaceful death. That's some serious political haymaking bullshit. True or not, it's not out place to know. But I wanted yous all to know that this is the big hatebrush people about to be painted with when she dies... Just disturbing all around, this here is...

Any chance we (and by "we," I mean "Matt") can designate a single post for discussion and updates on the Schiavo case? Preferably with a note in the sideblog? I believe it's been done before for topics that were spawning a post or more a day until there was a designated thread for them.

Within another week or two, there'll be another major update, either "feeding tube reinserted" or "Terry Schiavo dies" which would go just as well in a still-active thread as it would as yet another FPP. There are currently FIVE threads on Schiavo on the front page. Really, people.
posted by DevilsAdvocate at 9:08 AM on March 24, 2005

There's just no way to tell if a post has been flagged or not. There should be a notation to show how many times a post has been flagged. If it's been flagged 100 times or more then you're pretty sure it's going to be deleted and you don't need to do a callout.
posted by Jim Jones at 9:08 AM on March 24, 2005

Meh. I've seen worse. In fact, I've posted worse (although I can't link to them because they were posted to MeTa and AskMe and were deleted because, well, they sucked).

Also, I'm not sure that it's news that there's a great deal of misleading and contradictory information out in the blogosphere.

no, but since a majority of Bush supporters believe that WMD's have been found in Iraq and Saddam did 9-11, well, it's always good to point out when the American Right tries to pass off complete bullshit as gospel truth.
with this kind of confused and confusing MSM coverage (and the dishonest talk-radio wingnut-blog coverage) soon enough many Americans will start to believe that Schiavo can actually understand what people say to her and is able to create speech, however slurred.

I have a question, why isn't there a flag directly in the FP? It would be easier. (gosh " ...listening to a talk radio...heard on FOX News...", that almost causes physical pain)
posted by nkyad at 9:21 AM on March 24, 2005

For future reference, most issues have many different angles than what is presented at MetaFilter. Sometimes, these are called out in the threads. (Sometimes, these are best called out in the threads on some site called "FreeRepublic," as well.)

Don't feel too bad about it all, however -- MetaFilter tends to show more professional judgement in relation to the validity of angles than the news media does these days -- i.e. The news media reports both sides no matter how outlandish any side's claim might be. MetaFilter's readers, though they often disagree, are ultimately useful at putting things into perspective.

Consider your post, then, a calibration of the filter.
