Actually, it's possible someone else will have booked the downstairs. Anyway, my number is oh-sheven-nyne-ate-sicks-fyfe-phour-for-sicx-sevin-fahve.

You limeys have funny spelled numbers.
I kid because I love.
posted by Plutor at 12:40 PM on March 24, 2005

Did you feed that number through the Drunken-geordie-ator?

I'll be there of course and I'll be bringing my camera, my harmonica and my Chas & Dave records. OK, just the camera.

Looking forward to it, guys. You've got my number...

I'm gonna go get wasted, and call P_G. Just another Thursday night!

Get the fucking British out of northern Ireland. "United Kingdom", my ass, fucking emperialist scum.
posted by McGuillicuddy at 5:00 PM on March 24, 2005

P_G, is that big space done on purpose?
posted by Jim Jones at 5:10 PM on March 24, 2005

What big space? The one in my wallet?

btw, McGuillicuddy is serious.
posted by Pretty_Generic at 5:42 PM on March 24, 2005

Only half serious, P_G. The myopic view of many young Londoners about the continued occupation by British troops and denial of true Home Rule in Northern Ireland is disturbing. But does it make you a bad person? Well, yeah probably. But I too pay taxes to occupy a nation divided by our presence, I can't really pass judgement. So I will henceforth refer to the US as the United States of America and Iraq in your honor.
posted by McGuillicuddy at 6:01 PM on March 24, 2005

I doubt even Gerry Adams himself would deny that NI is currently part of the UK. But anyway, it would be hard to justify forcing home rule on the democratic majority that doesn't want it.

Dude, that's actually charity. The ones that didn't kill each other after a few weeks would starve during the first winter after all the British left.

Just say England it's easier.

WELL ACTUALLY THE BRITISH MILITARY PRESENCE HAS HALVED IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS, BUT WITH IRA ACTIVELY RETURNING TO ARMED CONFLICT I THINK THAT A SUBSTANTIVE-

...sorry, I don't know what came over me there. What I meant to say is, yes, I'll come and get pissed with yous (providing this bastard cold has cleared up a bit by tomorrow).
posted by flashboy at 2:52 AM on March 25, 2005

McGuillicuddy = troll.

No surrender to the IRA.

By the way, I have no money. I will be swopping anecdotes for drinks. All I need now is anecdotes.
posted by Pretty_Generic at 4:20 AM on March 25, 2005

I'll tel you an anecdote ABOUT KING BILLY AT THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE IN 1690-

gah! It happened again!
posted by flashboy at 4:56 AM on March 25, 2005

"Hello Bertie, what are you doing?"

"What-o Bingo! I'm just eating one of these roast Irish babies. They really are top notch grub"

"Jolly good. But isn't eating babies a bit, well I don't know, barbaric"

"Not at all my old chum. Jeeves tells me if we don't eat their babies then they'll just go on producing hundreds more and then they'll bring their horrible roman catholic ways over here. Or at least I think that's what he said."

"Well in that case Bertie you'd better pass me one as well!"

Bear in mind that The Fitroy Tavern stops serving food at 9.30pm. Get there early.

Have a good time, all. B.T.W. if I don't get a shout-out, I'm gonna get, ermmm, upset or something. dash_slot-; I'm missing you already.

The myopic view of many young Londoners
In comparison to the myopic view of many young Americans who assume that the UK consists of the three counties Londoninium, Scortlandshire and "the queen".
posted by seanyboy at 7:30 AM on March 25, 2005

Oh, only half as many foreign troops to impose democracy on the locals at gun point. Well, that sounds almost like freedom. But Heaven forbid the Irish in northern Ireland want a force to protect their rights too. Lord knows a New Northern Irish Assembly that gets dismissed regularly by London isn't what was bargained for.

Is this like sneakers for the Arabs, guns for the Jews? If it's trolling to remind somebody that Northern Ireland is not in a united kingdom, but a territory Britian continues to occupy, then color me green and trollish.
posted by McGuillicuddy at 7:42 AM on March 25, 2005

My famous stiff upper lip and rapier wit will be lost if no one shouts me.
Not that anyone will notice, I shall just go over here and pout.

McGuillicuddy, I'm sure everyone realises that, just because you have that hate thing for goats, doesn't mean you're a troll. Ditto living under a bridge.
posted by NinjaPirate at 8:55 AM on March 25, 2005

If I remember rightly, the recent dismissal of the Assembly wasn't initiated by Westminster - it was the elected Unionists who refused to share power with the elected Sinn Féin members, whose staff were spying for the IRA. Would you prefer anarchy? I doubt the Northern Irish would.
posted by Pretty_Generic at 10:02 AM on March 25, 2005

NP - you say troll like it is a bad thing... Compared to tacit support for the continued oppression of a foreign people, I find internet trolling fairly benign.

But have fun everybody. Buy P_G a drink. Next meetup:

Mahmoud's Cafe, Ramallah, the West Bank, Israel

(on preview: Anarchy, no. Local automony instead of continued British rule, yes. Some actual Irish on the "Royal Ulster Constabulary", sounds good too.)
posted by McGuillicuddy at 10:15 AM on March 25, 2005

McGuillicuddy reeks.

I could be wittier than that, but a gormless prickweasel who'd try to troll a simple meet-up thread doesn't deserve it.
posted by Decani at 10:19 AM on March 25, 2005

Not to break up the sectarian fun or anything, but I'm going to try and swing by.

After years of lurking it will be interesting to meet some faces to go with names.
posted by JPD at 10:28 AM on March 25, 2005

Re shout-outs: Is someone taking a camera?

Cause I'll send you a fiver, P_G, in exchange for a shout-out. As long as you promise to spend it on beer, and not a plate of Fried Northern Irish Babies and Mash.
posted by gramschmidt at 10:36 AM on March 25, 2005

If you mistake trolling for a minor disagreement on a public internet forum (so it includes swearing and name-calling, naturally) over a decades old problem, step away from the keyboard for a while. I didn't imagine P_G's prestine meetup thread would suffer because we yelled offensive shit at each other between the "yeah, i'll be there too" discussion.

If I've inhibited conversation about the meetup, my apologies. Alas I'll not be able to join you for a pint to make amends.
posted by McGuillicuddy at 10:45 AM on March 25, 2005

flashboy - have you sent the monkeysignal? I can't see it on Mofi.
posted by dash_slot- at 10:52 AM on March 25, 2005

Sorry McGuillicuddy, I didn't mean to join the pile on, I was trying to suggest that you weren't a troll by playfully presenting the criteria you didn't fulfill.
There's probably a fantastic Greek word to mean just that.
I realise that you don't live under a bridge and, for all I know, you have a fondness for goats.

Promise I don't think you're trolling.
posted by NinjaPirate at 11:27 AM on March 25, 2005

Fucksticks - working until 8 about 150 miles away ish.

Enjoy yourselves lads.

I shall update the Monkeysignal. Trouble is, I already know the regular London Monkey meeter-uppers are all out of the city this weekend. Bastards.

McGillyganglycullywhatsit, you seem to be some sort of fool. What sort, I'm not entirely sure yet. It's not so much that you mistook my obviously jokey shouty comments for a real argument... it's that you're actually losing that argument all by yourself.

And yes, by the way, I say that as a Northern Irish Catholic (lapsed), whose parents were heavily involved in the civil rights movement, and who knows plenty enough about that poor province to appreciate that you spout, dear sir, the purest shite.

flashboy: I see Mr. Mc-can't-spell-Gillycuddy hails from Boston. I do try not to be prejudiced, but in this case I couldn't suppress an instinctive "Oh, that explains it".

Some of you should try www.sluggerotoole.net, it's more suited to this sort of thing.

Well, the weather is quite bad, so we thought of just going to a pub - but still meeting at 2pm at Hammersmith tube :) See you there hopefully!
