Asheville meetup pictures! April 11, 2005 4:42 PM Subscribe
With sheer glee and drunken merriment, the Asheville MeFi meetup celebrated its first convergence this weekend. Photographic evidence abounds. (after a while you may be able to guess who is who)
Quotes:
"I have horrible hangovers but that doesn't stop me from being a problem drinker." ~Mygothlaundry
"Tell him it's an art project." ~ChrisTN, in reference to asking the wandering fellow to hold up our Free Quonsar sign.
"Where are the Weeners posts? Oh shit, this isn't Fark!" ~Moonbird
"You all better not be firemen or I'll have to shove a 2x4 up your asses." ~Wandering self admitted schizophrenic guy.

Actually, amber, we all saluted you and in my pre-shoutout scribbles, I had you down but my brain stopped working when it was time to play with my marker.

Are the drum circles at full power yet this spring? That was one of my favorite things, grabbing a growler of green man ale and heading on over to the drum circle...
Looked fun...wish i could have been.

Yes the tulip tatto is such a neat idea, so is the (I assume) reflection hosiery. Asheville is in N. Carolina, peacay.

I got a shoutout, thanks! Wow, am I famous now?
I have that exact same marker too. Those motherfuckers last forever. Looked like a good time and I must concur with the awesomeness of that tatt.

Moonbird - anyone ever tell you you look like a young Eric Begosian? And I do mean that as a compliment.
Nice organizing job there with the sign and all. Looks like a good time.

And a good time & one helluva lot of beer was had by all. Took me 24 hours at least to recover - but it was worth it. Thanks for the kind comments on the tattoo; it's from a 17th c. Dutch botanical & I love it.
No, Asheville is not part of the scary South (grumble, grumble, the south isn't scary) in fact it is an extremely blue, some would say deep purple, enclave in the Western NC mountains, full of a strange & often wonderful assortment of odd people from all over. You can't swing a yoga instructor here without hitting a bluegrass musician and y'all should come & visit the next time we do this!

Nowhere near the sprawly horror that is Raleigh - here, look. That's Asheville smack in the middle & I couldn't even zoom out enough to get Raleigh in the same picture. It's way off to the right, down in the flatlands where it gets horribly hot all summer long.

Amberglow, Asheville is also very beautiful, with interesting architecture, the beautiful nature, and belly dancers!
And of course the standard of living is very, very high: here's what a typical Ashevillian's house looks like.

museums? gay bars? good shopping? can you get around without a car? is HighPoint (that furniture place) nearby?

Here's the general all purpose tourist site.
Art museum.
Romance and travel. Gay bars yes.
Shopping can be iffy, not having a car limits you to downtown which is getting more expensive by the minute, alas. High Point is far, far away.

c'mere amberglow et al! we've got 2 major gay bars, 3 marginal ones, and downtown shopping is pretty unique... at least to this area. for any would be out of towners, i'd be happy to help with getting around. it's fairly easy.

In trying to put my finger on the flavor of Asheville (and why it's not part of the "scary South"), the phrase that popped into my head is "the Berkeley of the Appalachians." So, not quite, I know...but that's all that came to me.
