Outage, whoops May 4, 2005 5:44 PM   Subscribe

Sorry about that, but for the first time since I started hosting mefi at server matrix, there was an outage:

D2 OUTAGE: www.metafilter.com Last Updated: 05/04/2005 19:05:17 Details: This server did not come back online after reboot. We will investigate shortly.

(bwalker-05/04/2005 19:05:17): This server would not power on. We have swapped the chassis and this machine is now powered up and responding to ping and RDC.

But all should be good now.

I was just wondering whether the new live-in nanny will be able to reboot the server when need be....? [Just sayin']

Hell, I started spewing theories and opinions to my coworkers. They were all like "That site of yours is down, huh?"

Jeepers, I thought maybe the FBI had confiscated your servers and was desperately trying to decode the meaning of pants-fish.

Wow. I just figured it was the baby taking you away from mefi. I'm sure I'm not the only one that figured there might be problems for the next few days. We don't care, Matt. Spend some time with Fiona, we'll be back.

Yeah. What bh said. Congrats. Enjoy every day, because time, as you perceive it, has just begun accelerating. I can clearly remember my son's birth, the first time he lifted his head, crawled, walked. He starts college in the fall.

Kay is an awesome pimpette because she allowed herself to be photographed so much at the hospital! And the pictures to be posted for everyone to see. Wow. Beautiful daughter, Matt and Kay. Good luck!

Fiona totally broke the internet. Metafilter, Audioscrobbler and Hotmail were all having intermittent-to-extended problems yesterday and today and beyond that, the internet's just, like, some random doo-dads or something. She obviously has special powers of some sort. Notice any radioactive spider bites during the pregancy?

Has there been an official CONGRATULATIONS! WELCOME, FIONA HAUGHEY! thread yet?

mm hmm

also, is the name a roundabout reference to macintosh via pop folk? or am I just playing word association by myself...

Does Audioscrobbler ever actually do anything interesting? I signed up, played a thousand songs and weeks later still had no recommendations, neighbors or anything else. I deleted the thing since its sole purpose seemed to be to extract information about me without giving back anything of value in return.

I worry about this every time now. I so rarely work at corporate offices and have been for the past few months. Do they do things like that?

oh my yes. my sister works for 8e6, which produces blocking software. they sell mainly to schools, but companies buy their stuff to block shopping, gambling, online gaming, and of course, pr0n. (Sis surfs pr0n sites 25 hours each week. so much ickier than it sounds.)

You need a diaper genie

Ha! The first time my wife and I saw one of these at a friend's house, we snickered and thought it was the lamest thing ever. Four kids later, and a bazillion diapers later, and I'm like, "screw the environment, gimme the genie." For those who don't know, it's a little baggie dispenser that seals off each fetid diaper so it doesn't stink up the whole house.

I feel that somehow, the term "diaper genie" should be turned into a verb and used to describe the treatment of questionable posts. Maybe in honor of the new arrival the [!] could be temporarily replaced with [gimme the Genie].
