E3 Los Angeles meetup? May 11, 2005 7:19 AM   Subscribe

Now that E3 is one week away, I feel it's time to revisit the Los Angeles meetup. How about it, west coasties?

Perhaps we can pretend that the idea of a whole bunch of video-gaming Mefites travelling three-thousand miles and spending hundreds of dollars to stand in line to play 15 minutes of unreleased video games is a bug. Yeah, yeah, that's it.

unreleased video games is a bug.

You've just jinxed your 15 minutes of game-playing by mentioning the b-word. Sorry.

I can see it now:

* Plutor waits for 3 hours in line
* Plutor picks up the Xbox 360 controller
* A massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake rends Los Angeles in twain, causing Plutor to fall into a bottomless fissure.

I'm still going.

Nothing has changed for me; I will be there all 3 days, with a PSP, with a video of a masturbating walrus on it. On Wednesday, I'll be wearing a red shirt with an image of The Cheat from homestarrunner.com, so if you see me, please don't hesitate to say hi. I will have clients in all week from out of town, so I probably won't be able to attend an official meetup, but anyone actually AT E3, I'd love to say hi.

I'm still up for a meet-up...what sort of meeting place are we going for? Bar? Deli? Beach?

Somewhere with food. Food is good...

Somewhere with food is good. Somewhere with seating. Somewhere with drinks? Somewhere close to downtown might be good, since the expo is at the Staples Center. Anyone know if the Kibitz Room next to Canter's Deli is any good? Asparagirl, you mentioned Canter's in the previous thread and the Kibitz came up in my bar-searching.
posted by Plutor at 11:19 AM on May 11, 2005

I like Canter's Kibitz Room, but it's not near downtown -- it's in Fairfax District, which is probably about 6 or 7 miles away (and, more to the point, not a particularly quick drive at 6 p.m.). For downtown, off the top of my head I always think of Figueroa Hotel. I know there are other bar/pub type places in that area, but maybe someone who actually works downtown (yes, a rare breed indeed in this city!) might have some good ideas?

Oh, and my coworker just suggested Ciudad for its excellent happy hour, though presumably we'd be staying beyond that.

So that pretty much taps me for downtown suggestions.

I will nominate Guelaguetza. Not only is it one of the best Oaxuacan restaurants in the US, it's also big, has big tables, and it's on Olympic directly West of the Convention center. Also it's inexpensive and has great margaritas.

Plutor - be careful, the expo is NOT actually at the Staples Center. It's at the Los Angeles Expo Center, which is also downtown, but is a separate and completely unrelated building. The Staples Center is where our basketball team used to play for the Championship at around this time last year before they decided to suck.

Not going.

*sigh*

well, at least no one will skin me and wear my outsides as a disguise.

Jonson, I only said I wasn't going to make it to E3.

You're local, I can skin you anytime. ;)

chaz, that place sounds good. Solves the various issues of eating/drinking/convenient location/seating a bunch of people. Seconded!

Wow, a 9.4 rating, and only one dollar-sign. I'm in.

Are they at least near each other? When I Google Maps'd the convention center, the thumbtack was surprisingly close to a grey block marked "Staples Center".

Not going to E3, but very definitely interested in a meetup.
Let's do this people! Yay for HappyHour.

Okay, so what is the scoop? I'm going to be there, I'd love to meet you guys for food/coffee/beer/skinning johnson and wearing his outsides as a disguise...whatever cranks your tractor.

Here is the funny thing, being a true-eastcoast boy...I'm actually timid about coming to the west coast (thanks to the media and GTA).

BUT I'LL be THERE.

Look for this guy and he'll tell you where I am (chances are, I'm him)

oh, and is anyone heading this up? I would be up for exchanging contact info with him/her/it. (Actually if you want to do that, I'll contact you when I get in town, just email me: scott AT sthig dot com)

ooh, Guelaguetza's incredible! Great idea. Thirded.
posted by scody at 10:25 AM on May 12, 2005

Plutor, the convention center is next door to Staples Center. It's the older, slightly uglier building to the west.
posted by malocchio at 10:38 AM on May 12, 2005

I guess the next step would be to pick a day... people who are actually doing business or whatever at the convention center should be the ones to decide on it, because they're in town for a limited time... so, suggestions?

How does Wednesday (the 18th) at 7pm sound?

Do we meet outside until we have a good idea how big our party is? Or is there a bar we can take over?

18th sounds good to me

I can't make it by 7, but I'll just show up a bit late...I get off work @ 5:30 or so, and will be taking the bus downtown from the palisades...

I'm in for Wednesday evening, too!

Do we meet outside until we have a good idea how big our party is? Or is there a bar we can take over?

I've only been to the Guelaguetza on the other side of town, so I'm not sure of the layout of this one... Chaz?

Sounds like fun - I'll try to be there.

I'd like to do this. Only 3 people showed up at the last meetup though (hiya willnot & katemonkey~)
