the adminis awful busy helping people license stuff under creative commons. how does one fill day after day doing that, i wonder? and how much is it worth? and how useable is a site that's never up?

A programmer friend has rewritten the way comments are handled here, which I've implemented in the past couple days. I'm moving to his optimized homepage changes next. You should notice (when the server is up) that comment pages come up faster.

Once these changes are made, we're moving on to another wave of optimization to see where the problem lies.

I wouldn't mind having a look at the logs, to see exactly what's happening at the exact moment that MeFi augurs in.

Matt, is there any chance that you could put up the logs, so that those coders amongst us could try to help with the problem? Obviously, the IP addresses would have to be stripped first, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

Matt- I wonder about the redesign of the website (the contest late last year). Is that simply cosmetic, or will it affect the underpinnings that are frequently going belly-up these days? Or is the whole redesign on hold until the underpinnings are more stable? Or is it just being bandaided to death? I'm not a programmer or anything, but I'm just curious about what the future holds for MeFi.

Anus: I decided to start this thread based on this comment from someone else on MeCha. Still no riches of the heavens; I'll get back to ya on that.

The redesign was cosmetic and nothing else, which is why it was always on the backburner.

I'm going to continue working on the site with some outside help until we get this problem licked.

One of the worst archetypes of internet community user is the prophet of doom who shouts incessantly that the end is nigh. Have the MoFi guys been compiling star charts? Because otherwise, I don't see how they can leap from server glitches to the demise of a community 20,000+ strong.

Matt, I noticed just a few minutes ago that when I go to page 13 of my comments, it actually only shows comments 500-550 (or whatever) rather than the whole list. This is a huge fix, and one that people have been asking for for ages now.

Thanks for fixing it, and thanks for putting up with all of us whiny junkies whose lives revolve around this little project of yours.

Doohickie: I just meant that, while there have been some very snitty reports of MetaFilter's downtime, there has also been, in fact, quite a bit of downtime. What's exaggerated about saying that MetaFilter is down a lot? It is. If you haven't noticed, you must have a life or something.

Hey matt, regarding those changes to format: will you give a heads-up before those changes are rolled-out, in case any third party tools rely on the current formatting? You don't, of course, have any obligation to do so.
