OK to post stories from plastic.com? February 27, 2001 2:35 PM Subscribe
Directly arising from a thread that I posted on Metafilter about the pill and its effect on mate choice, another question arrives inexorably - I found the article in question via Plastic.com - which as we all know is the 'Metafilter it's not OK to like'. I suppose this is an issue of etiquette or policy - is it appropriate to post stories for discussion here which have already been covered there?
I think it's fine. Apparently Matt agrees, because starting in March he will be giving a $150 prize to whoever posts the most Plastic links here at MetaFilter! Right Matt?

I looked over Plastic.com and it seemed ok. Just out of curiousity, what is everyone's bone to pick with plastic.com? I guess I didn't pay enough attention.

I don't know. I would ask people if they like seeing posts lifted from slashdot showing up here as well? Sometimes it sucks (personally, I think about half the time), other times I'm glad someone did it (I don't read slashdot anymore). I think the same could be said of plastic, if something gets posted there, and it's amazing, by all means post it here.

I don't think cross-posting is really a bad thing. I don't read Slashdot or Plastic. But I do read Metafilter. Having to see posts over and over is an unfortunate side-effect of reading multiple weblog-type sites.
After all, no one complains when articles are crossposted between MeFi and The Stuffed Dog. What's up with that?

I don't read plastic, so I don't see them twice. I'm sure there's more than a few people in my boat too. So, in my view, go ahead.

No problem here; I don't read Plastic or Slashdot either. Having checked out Plastic a couple times, though . . . does anyone else have a problem with the freaking load time? When it launched, I checked it out a few times, and I grew beards waiting for the thing to load. I just checked it again . . . same thing. (It may be the work PC . . . I don't get it. Why do they give me a T1, and then hook it up to a bloody box with a terrible modem, 64MB RAM, and paleolithic processor?)
Pay no attention, please, to the fact that I can go off-topic multiple times in one single post.

I think the crossposting is ok IF people would just put [via so - or so]. Sometime I'll see an interesting thread on slashdot but can't handle the 200+ posts on it, and I'll really hope it turns up here to see what discussion follows. But if I actually have some work to do that day I can skip over the [via memepool] and [via slashdot] stuff..
