Has anyone else gotten anonymous hate mail from an etiquette-minded MetaFilter user? Fun.

Here's the mail, which was in response to this post:

Subject: Someone hates you. Smile.

FROM: I Hate You <nobody@raging.nu>

Someone has sent you hate mail from http://raging.nu/ihateyou.php

Here it is...

Hey, since metafilter is having problems why not refrain from posting links everyone in the WORLD already knows about. Fuckedblog has been up and running and known by anyone who hasn\'t had their head under a pillow for a while now.

THINK before posting.

The anonymous and private part is what's lame. But questioning the quality of a post is part of the process.

Also, this person sounds kind of mean.

Whoever it is is a coward. And also incorrect: I hadn't heard about Fuckedblog until it was posted here. And I'm an information junkie.

FuckedBlog was new to me too. The only other place I saw a mention was on Stating the Obvious. I searched MetaFilter and MetaTalk before posting it.

My anonymous friend wasn't actually as anonymous as I thought. Before he used raging.nu, he went from my MetaFilter user page to my Web site in search of my e-mail address. (Which pretty much spoils the whole point of using raging.nu -- I've got his IP address.)

I have gotten my share of mean letters via Metafilter. I thought it was a good link, I never saw it before, and I actually laughed out loud. What else could you ask for? Any link that shows me my good friend Anil's name in large type is worth a click too.

I thought it was a great link, and brand new to me. Actually, just today I was thinking that someone should be keeping track--so I was happy to see that someone is. Screw the chicken-boy (or -girl) emailer.

Although I had thought this meme had already traveled its course before rogers posted it, I didn't mind seeing it again. Of course, my perception is skewed, I knew about the page before it went live.

But what offends me about the coward who sent an email is not just that they are rude, inconsiderate, and, redundantly, cowardly. Those are egregrious but not unforgiveable sins.

No, the true offense is that they are so unaware and short-sighted that they thing something so obscure as a compilation enumerating personal sites in a specific community which have shut down or gone on hiatus would garner enough attention to be ubiquitous.

"everyone in the WORLD"...? Indeed, the lack of perspective and profoundly self-centered nature of this particular malcontent's ill-tempered missive to rcade reveals a profound ignorance of the vastness and richness of the internet, and its ability to render obscure even the most popular items in our particular community of the web.

But more importantly, it reveals the self-absorption necessary for a person to personally contact another human being through the veil of anonymity and assail them without cause.

Please understand, anonymous mailer: Your attempt to "protect" metafilter was not only unwanted unnecessary in this case, it was also inappropriate in its delivery. Assailing other members without recourse is a much surer way to destroy the community of MeFi than the occasional redundant or obvious thread posting.

Which this was not. So do us all a favor, coward: Excuse yourself. And apologize.

And, oh... Thirteen is my friend. :)

I got one too. And I got a post to FuckedWeblog this morning asking me if I was aware that I was ripping off fuckedcompany. Duh! I tried to respond but it was a fake address.

As for FW being a new link rcade, it is. You caught onto it within five days of me creating it. I thought you were really quick to post. The only other mention I knew of was on ALA.

Discreetly e-mailing fellow MeFiers about issues of propriety at MeFi is generally acceptable... the sad thing is that this person chose to blow the whole thing out of the water.

I liked the link, FWIW.
