Again, a non-virtual Metafilter gathering in NYC should be proposed. Cool/odd/appropropriate location? Williamsburg, BK, or within line of sight of the computer. Does anyone know anyone who owns or has connections with such a venue?
Self-self post, but the Fringe is fun. My friend put on Opportunities of a Night last year, and her friend Dido Furens (sp?)

I'd second Williamsburg, since that's where I live. I know of several good bars to recommend. I'm in. Let's do it before the end of August.

In all seriousness, Williamsburg would add to the sense of adventure. Lower East Side is cool too; Soho is not.

Anil, aren't you one of the guys who had never been to Ludlow Street? You know, one of the most popular night-life areas in all the five boroughs?
For our New York Metafilter get-together, I propose Rain Lounge, Friday August 10. The Rain is at North 6th Street and Bedford, one block from the Bedford L stop, which is itself one stop from Manhattan. Opened two months ago by musician Bobby Bell, the place continues to draw a low-key, low-poser crowd, straight and gay, black, white and Latin, creative and international. The other night, just a normal night, I met a Japanese student couple, three Danish girls (one local, two visiting), two new arrivals from San Francisco, an English musician and a German composer. The bartenders are nice (among them a DJ, a painter, a French art student, an actor, a musician), Bobby is friendly, and there's a small garden in the back. Drinks are about $4 for a bottle, $6 or so for a mixed drink. If we draw more than 15 people, the place might be a little to cozy...
Failing that, propose another date and a place from here. Take a look at Black Betty and the Stinger Club.

I should add that the review of Rain Lounge at the link above is pretty crappy. Beers behind the bar include Red Hook, Rolling Rock, Coronoa, Red Strip, Heineken, Amstel Light, Budweiser, Bud Light, usually two kinds of Sam Adams on tap, and a couple of others, I think. The place is not a Juice Bar; I think he's confused with the place on a corner one block away on the same side of the street.

Actually, I think none of us had been there... I'm still not sure that you didn't lead us into the East River. In your defense, though, I will say to everyone that Grant is a man of taste, and I will defer to his suggestions.

What time are you proposing for that Friday? I tend to find Bedford Ave a bit zooish on a Friday evening. Then again, there is that dead time after the happy hours and before 11pm or so.
If the weather is here is Iona on Grand, which has a decent tap selection and a nice little backyard. Right bank also has a nice outdoor area. Mugs also has a little beer garden that is pretty easy to deal with on a nice night and nearly 30 taps with really clean lines. The Mugs website's ugliness is only surpassed by the ugliness of the Mugs t-shirt though. A 5 block walk from the Bedford L.
I put a vote in for the Brooklyn Brewery though. They are open on Friday and Saturday nights from 6 to 10 pm. Not open the latest, but maybe a good place to start. Sometimes they have free munchies. It is rather bright, there can be alot of kids and you have to smoke outside. However, there are lots of tables, the beer is cheap and fresher than what you will get at other places. And yes, fresher also means it will get you drunk faster than normal.

Ace Bar is, like, so five years ago. Although they do have pool, pinball and big booths. It's at 531 E. 5th Street in the East Village.

Sardines' for Brooklyn Brewery (in Williamsburg),
mine for Rain Lounge etc, (in Williamsburg).
Please vote on this before this Sunday, August 5, so that we can spread the word after we've decided.

Yes, BB is strictly beer - another drawback. And actually I should have just offered those as suggestions as opposed to proposals. I think I was a wee bit "coffeed-up" last night.
I am really up for anything. The Rain at HHour sounds like a good start. I was walking by there last night after logging out and the crowd seemed quite reasonable and the place looks rather comfy too. Reminded me of that place Blue Bar on Driggs and 8th - loungy, good music and a decent crowd.
The kicker is that there are enough places around (finally) that you can pretty much decide as you go along. Especially at that time of night.
I change my vote - I'll go with the Rain scenario.
Ill abstain on the date - It is really not an issue for me. Any day is fine.

From Park Slope, you can take the F, I believe, transfer to the G Queens-bound, get off at Metrpolitan and either transfer to the L and take it one stop Manhattan-bound to Bedford, or just walk from there. About a 15-minute walk, if you don't stop to buy drugs.

It might be fun to start at the tippity top of Bedford (with the bar that used to be a car garage..lots of outdoor space) and hit every bar on Bedford(I think this has been mentioned) all the way down to Turkeys Nest(the last bar on Bedford). That should be about 7 or 8 stops along the way...not including Bodega pit stops for the block or two with no bar(gasp!).
