You may have noticed: we've just started testing some new ads from Carbon, on the front pages of MetaFilter and Ask MeFi. Please let us know about bugs, issues, etc. [more inside]

Anybody else miss the old Metafilter Text Ads system?

Anybody else miss the old Metafilter Text Ads system? Those were great, the ones where you just paypal $20 and get a little text ad for your blog or whatever. The only site I know of that still has that system (which I believe was pioneered here at MeFi) is Kuro5hin. Anybody know of any others?

Metafilter + bacon = delicious/WTF?

Sorry if this has been addressed before, but I am logged in and see ads from fmpub.net on the front page. The ad presently displayed invites me to "chew the fat at serious eats". It's the same ad after multiple refreshes also. While I am a fan of bacon, I don't normally see ads when I'm logged in. This is all the more curious given that I'm using adblock plus and don't usually see ads on any site. Is this a temporary thing, or is bacon now an integral part of the site?

Ads on user profiles

Has anyone ever been propositioned to put ads on their Mefi profile page? I was shocked. Well, not really. (mi)

Jewelboxing ad

I heart the Jewelboxing flash ad in the Blue sidebar! I have wasted many happy seconds mousing over the case to watch in infantile fascination! ...open the case... close the case! ...open the case... close the case!

a way to replace the SG revenue

Matt's clearly not being compensated adequately for the time and $$ he spends on this place, and the avenues open to him are apparently distasteful to many of us. As fun as it is to complain about SG, it might be even more fun coming up with a way to replace the SG revenue ourselves. -->

Suicide Girls TextAds

So yeah, suicide girls. After some teeth gnashing, and asking all my female friends about taking on suicide girls image ads on mefi, I decided to take them (they seem tasteful to me -- I dropped the ones showing too much skin) with the caveat that a simple click and anyone could hide them forever. Here's what I said when I took their first textad long ago and the same applies here. They are as racy as I will go, and this won't start a slippery slope as they're the exception to the rule.

Advertising policy and spammers

I have a question about Metafilter's Textad policy. In general, I find the ads relevant and useful --- I'm far more likely to click through here than on other sites.

However, I noticed today that there's an ad running that asks people to "Play Texas Hold'em", posted by checknraise. Those of you who run Movable Type or Wordpress blogs might have noticed a recent wave of comment spam advertising "Texas Hold'em".

If I had ads on my blog, I wouldn't accept them from people who are also spammers. Does Metafilter have a policy on this type of thing, and is there any way to dump the "Texas Hold'em" ads?

Questionable use of Ellen Feiss' likeness in this ad

While the fad still exists, does anyone else have an issue with the textad for the Ellen Feiss parody? (scroll to nearly the end of the page) I'm not crazy about promoting profit from the theft of someone's likeness without their permission, but then again, this isn't my site. Should the bylaws of the textads merely weed out offensive material, or should they extend to intellectual property issues as well? While they may be two different things, a recent story on NPR highlighted that cafepress is deleting "Ellen Feiss" related stores as fast as they are created.

Any update on the No Talent Ass Clown idea?

Spotted T3's "Give my ass a job" textad today(find it yourself), and it reminded me of something. Matt: Any news on the notalentassclown idea?
This has been your daily trainspotting moment.

Ad Farm is a text advertising network that has recently sprung up

Ad Farm is a text advertising network that has recently sprung up. It remains to be seen whether they're repeating the same old mistakes, making brand new ones or doing something cool.

Micro advertising

Micro Advertising - a way to make niche internet publishing profitable?: "It's all about targeted micro buys of advertising space - the old principle of getting the right message in front of the right group of people. Buying 10,000 impressions of your message in front of a very targeted audience for a low fee. " Thomas has created a Yahoo group to hash out the issues further, if anyone's interested.

You got a problem with Text Ads?

TextAds. As Matt promised, unobtrusive and inoffensive. I certainly don't have a problem with these. What does everyone else think?

Should we run ads?

Okay, we've discussed it before, but now having looked at the stats for the last couple of months, ADs are a real possibility. Last I checked the average AD payout was $1 ever 1000 page views. Now, with MeFi getting over 5,000,000 a month, that's $5000 a month in revenue. That could keep Matt happy all year round and MeFi up for life. Comments?
