Metafilter + bacon = delicious/WTF? March 1, 2007 10:57 AM   Subscribe

Sorry if this has been addressed before, but I am logged in and see ads from fmpub.net on the front page. The ad presently displayed invites me to "chew the fat at serious eats". It's the same ad after multiple refreshes also. While I am a fan of bacon, I don't normally see ads when I'm logged in. This is all the more curious given that I'm using adblock plus and don't usually see ads on any site. Is this a temporary thing, or is bacon now an integral part of the site?

It's national pig day, Matt is serving images from metafilter (which is why adblock didn't kill them) in relation to this awareness day.
posted by Mitheral at 11:11 AM on March 1, 2007

It's just a one day ad for a friend's site. It'll be over soon.

But we've discussed this before, and yeah, I still serve small 125x125 ads to both members and non-members and I'll make that a preference so you can kill them.

Bacon is an integral part of creation.

Ok, I had skipped right over the image link to the fmpub javascript. I understand now sort of. I note with some dismay there was no similar celebration of National Pie Day.

I like the ad, and I learned that it is national pig day. It sure beats the drab, and to some disturbing, AT&T ad.

Only in America do you celebrate an animal by killing an eating it. (Unless it's done in other countries and I just don't know about it, in which case it's weird there, too.)

Yeah - animal sacrifice is unheard of outside of the US.

Here's the history of pigday, it was apparently an american thing made up in 1972 and you're supposed to celebrate pigs, not quite eat them, but how else do we enjoy pigs?
posted by mathowie (staff) at 11:29 AM on March 1, 2007 [1 favorite]

Well, we're arguably celebrating it for having been killed and eaten, and doing such a tremendous job of it. And mastication is the highest form of flattery.

Yes. And the more of it you eat, the more honour it accumulates. At the end of the year, the souls of the most honourable pigs are sent back to Earth to incarnate as new pigs. Holy pigs: pigs whose every rib glistens with pious grease, each delectable slice of belly a literal cornucopia of heavenly flavour. Upon the seventh incarnation, the sounding of the World Squeal will call all barbecue-lovers, bacon eaters and chophounds to the Promised Land, where a river of sausage gravy will carry us to a picnic table of infinite size.

While we're (sort of) on the subject, would it be possible to make the fmpub adds the last thing to load, rather than loading before the page content, and then position them into place with CSS or something? It kinda sucks having the page stop loading for half a minute when fmpub's servers are swamped or what-not, and encouraging people to use AdBlock or the like to deal with this seems like the Wrong Thing.

See, this is where most deists have it wrong. Rather than arguing about creationism, meaning of the universe, primacy of humanity, life after death, blah, blah, who-gives-a-blah, they should argue proof of deity by the existence of bacon. That is: Bacon is proof of a Benevolent God. God loves us and so Gave us Bacon.

This is why Judaism and Islam are wrongo---not because they read different books or revere different prophets, but because of they Deny Bacon. This doctrine is more inclusive than traditional Cristian theology, because most of south-east Asia Embraces The Pig, and thus are Saved by Bacon!

I think it would be cool to have the ability to comment on the ads that go up there. Maybe advertisers are too squeamish, but it would be a good community idea.

The ontological bacon argument: imagine the finest, smokiest, best-cured... well, in short, the most perfect side of bacon ever. Now, if you didn't possess this side of bacon, then surely it would be even better if you actually did... but since it's perfect, you must.

Enjoy! It turns out it's magically self-replenishing, too.

I think it would be cool to have the ability to comment on the ads that go up there. Maybe advertisers are too squeamish, but it would be a good community idea.

This gives me a perverse idea: a shades-of-wiki community site built around the idea of the footnote as sole structural entity. The only relation that new content can have to existing content is in the form of footnote-about.

Adapting mefi to this model, the front page of the blue would be the main page, a list of links and paragraphs. A thread would be a footnote of a given block of text; slashdot-style nested comments would be the analogue of chaining footnotes on individual comments within the base thread-as-footnote object; metatalk threads, too, would formally be footnotes of the things being discussed. And cell divide's idea would be the natural result of footnoting the ads.

And it'd all be very Web 2.0, with cool dynamic footnote-creation and -management tools to make it easier to create your recursive commentaries.

It could be called Footnotr, or something equally obnoxious. "The plastic.com it's okay to cite."

Did I say I buy third-rate bargain-bin pork rind rejects? Good, half-inch-thick, butcher-carved American-style bacon is the only thing that truly elevates us as a people. Canadian bacon is just a vegan plot to substitute lean, salted recycled shoe leather for meat. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I think cortex is on to something. I'm guessing you could land $2.5m in Series A financing if you just put that in PowerPoint. But you should call it "Footnoter" and then let the VCs think that it's their idea to get all 2.0 and remove the extraneous vowels.

Let me also note that (1) god, I love pork products and (2) I have absolutely no problem seeing a small ad once in a while 'cause Matt's baby needs new shoes.
