Secret Quonsar: The run-up, the run-down, and general preparation (2010)

It's that time of year again! For the past several years, we've enjoyed swapping gifts in a secret Quonsar swap. I'll be organizing it this year (with the help of Indigo Rain, last year's organizer) My goal is to open signups on November 15, and do the ceremonial giftee random draw on (American) Thanksgiving Day, which is November 25th. There was a list in the last few weeks of a bunch of weird places to get christmas gifts. One was the american science supply and the author commented that a similar list was put up last year. Searching metafilter and ask metafilter has proven fruitless. Can someone get me back to the post? thanks.

Hey Matt, in the gifting spirit, how about a link to the give-a-mefi-membership gift option somewhere on the Blue? Did the "beta" period work out? If so, don't be shy. It's a great feature. I just used it. But I had to hunt and peck through the MeTa archives to find it :)

Currently in beta: give a mefi account as a gift. I think all the bugs have been worked out. You put in your friend's email, pay the five bucks, and they'll get an email letting them pick a username, password, and other details. If you try it out, let me know if you or your friend gets any errors.

Gifting a Metafilter account

Can I give the gift that keeps on giving? Meaning, a mefi account? As it stands I could pay the five bucks and sign somebody up, but the giftee wouldn't have any control over her username or password and can't change them after the fact.
