This brief What You Can Do guide was the standout link I saw in the main thread. It lists places to donate and other ways to help. [more inside]

Earlier today in a thread, there was a comment from Quackles:

“I know this is slightly off-topic, but as someone who hasn't made a post on MetaFilter yet, do you have any advice on what to consider, uh... worthy? I suspect I am beset by the same anxiousness.”

I know that we have the FAQ (lots of helpful advice in there), but I thought it'd be nice to just have a place to discuss how to ease into making a first post. People can share their tips, their suggestions, their own experiences making a post, finding out it was a double, or how some posts just don't fly and how some just take off into weird and wonderful places. General MetaHelpfulness with putting something out there for the community to engage with. Please share if you feel so inclined.

Is there some sort of informal way that we can self-organize into a network of volunteers that can provide local assistance to AskMefites in need? Or maybe have the option for location information on AskMe questions so that we could receive alerts to local questions a la IRL? Or something? DisasterFilter Pony: This spring has seen some horrific devastation around the world. Is there any way, using our profile locs or something where we could compile a list of mefites near disasters so we could make sure they're ok, or see what help we can get to someone who is already on the ground where it's happening? I NEED HELP.

Okay, I know this isn't the point of MetaFilter, but I'm desperate and I don't have time to find out this information on my own.

I have a friends mother who is trapped in New Orleans and I need to find out who I need to contact to let them know where she is. Red Cross is no help. If anyone out there knows who I can contact, please let me know.
