Rolling out some updated site documentation

We're updating some site documents today to better reflect contemporary MetaFilter.  Today's updates include the New User pages that potential new community members move through when signing up, the site's core guidelines page, and a new document discussing common microaggressions and being mindful about the impact of dominant-culture dynamics on a diverse membership.  I'll talk in more detail about all that below the fold. Looking for articles on processes in community blogs

i'm looking for articles/opinions summarising (self-)regulatory processes of community weblogs such as MeFi, as orientation for the latest bouts of antville soul-searching.

the policing of public space

On metafilter, there is a bottom up approach to the policing of public space. Ie, citizens flag “bad” posts and then have meta discussions which really serve as trials by a peer group, if you will. The analogy breaks though because the jurors are not randomly selected and thus usually have a vested interest in the decision (which can lead to name calling, etc). Ultimately, these discussions are formed such that mathowie and jessamyn have moderating powers “in check” by the people. They can weigh in on the issues, make decisions, and face public scrutiny when a decision is made, especially if the decision is vastly unpopular. What are some of the other ways that you can think of to police public on-line spaces?

reason for deletion?

I don't think deleting Metatalk threads asking to clarify the deletions of Ask Metafilter threads is good for the community. [+]

Can I link to my organisation's new product on Mefi?

I work for a large organisation that has launched a new web product. Its a paid for service. I'd like to post a link in the blue, as I am personally interested in what people think about it. I do not work on the product, but I do use it. Is this against policy?

Choosing to remain anonymous, then being an ass

If you can't beat em, join em, eh? I have finally reached my tolerance threshold for people who choose—and are allowed—to be anonymous on this community site. If folks can remain anonymous and hurl invectives toward my wife (who is not even a MeFi member) then the time has come where I too must become anonymous.

I know it has been discussed before, but anonymity has no place in a community such as this. If people can't stand behind their own words then perhaps it is best if they hold their tongues?

Thoughts on online communities

"One of the things that separates Synapse from other online communities, is that its members have the opportunity for their words to be shared with people outside the community, by being published in Mindjack Magazine." So say the Synapse guidelines.
