Do we know the demographics of metafilter users?

Reading the recent user survey summary, I see a lot of talk about the identity of the user base. Do we actually know what the demographics are of MetaFilter users? Has there ever been an attempt to survey the users' identities? It would be interesting to know how people think of themselves in terms of nationality, politics, gender, race, sexuality, class, etc. I often read assertions in comments about the identities of the user base, but I am wondering if they correspond to the user base in reality.

What makes people stick around?

One moment, you're a noob; the next you're old furniture. If fairly lax criteria were applied (say at least one post, even if it's only a brief lackadaisacal or flippant comment per month - but no no less! (more prolonged absences, for whatever reason, counting for nothing, whatever the original date of joining), just how many old-timers or veterans (inveterates even) does MetaFilter have? Who are these people? The interesting question being, of course, what made them (you) stay and, as it were, stay regular, despite all the alleged turmoil and changes we've been through?

P.S. This might be a silly question and I'm not painlessly aware of this.

Can we close signups now?

Can we close the door now? I'm genuinely happy to have some new blood, but here's the problem. Pretty much everyone who's been reading the site with their noses against the glass has been let in. Hereafter, we're going to get a bunch of folks who happen to be wandering by, and know nothing of how things are done around here. (I don't know if that's the case with notmtwain, I'm only using his/her post as an example because it glares so.) We can always open it up again later, but can we have a moratorium on new users? Just for now? Please?

MeFi census?

The success of the Political Compass thread a few posts back got me to thinking about an interesting notion: Might it be time for a MeFi census?

Fat through Short: Metafilterists as Common Populace

Fat or short , it seems like Metafilter is the internet's answer to the island of misfit nerds. As a short guy (we prefer the term "diminutive"), I'm curious about how many of the 16000 of us would be condidered "average" people. Can the members of MetaFilter be considered a fair cross-section of the population?

What's the gender breakdown on MeFi?

The large penis thread got me thinking -- along with going bowling with nine guys during MeFiSea -- what's the gender breakdown on MeFi, for those that have a stated gender?

There are some young teenagers here.

Twice in the last couple days, posters have identified themselves as much younger than I expected to find here. One said he/she was 13, another was in the "10 to 14 group." I'm not surprised, exactly, but maybe a little uncomfortable. I don't want to underrate a 14-year-old's ability to handle "adult" discourse, but I'm wondering whether there is the potential for some problems (speaking very generally) here.

Have we leveled off at 9075 users?

The number of users has been at 9075 for a few days now. Have we levelled off?

userbase has been growing at a near-exponential rate

So, it seems like Metafilter's getting pretty crazy lately? This might be the reason: the userbase has been growing at a near-exponential rate. (I wrote a little script to plot the number of users over time to a graph. Hope you like it.)
