Bad Formatting on MeFi Threads September 23, 2001 11:08 PM   Subscribe

MetaFilter’s code is messed up. The front page is fine, but all of the threads start with an unclosed anchor tag. This is bad. To be more specific, there’s only the left angle bracket and the insides of the link. You’re missing a right angle bracket and the closing tag.

I don't see this, even on the specific thread you did a screen cap of. You might want to give some details about your platform so it can be looked into.

I'll email you the code I'm getting on that same page, and see if that's what you're seeing.

The problem only occurs when I’m not logged in (I updated the page to show that). For the record, I’m using Opera 5.12 on Windows 98. Matt emailed me, I emailed him back, and he’s presumably figuring out the problem as I type this.

I have the same problem, which I think was mentioned earlier in "Bugs." I'm at work, running Windows NT with IE 5.0, though I think it happens at home too (Win2K, IE 6.0). Curiously, if a post has two links (like this one), I don't see any text until the second link. For example, in the thread mentioned above, all I see is: "Electrotank's Minigolf on the cute and addictive scales." (Sorry, I can't do a screen capture at work... At least, I don't think I can.)

I just looked at the code, and there's no     >     to close off the initial [a href] tag. Again, only when I'm not logged in.

It happens to me when I am logged in, but not in all posts. Right now I can see all of machaus's original post in the simple pleasures thread but only "fark]" on mathowie's tiny windows games post.

IE 5.5, Win NT.

One other note, if I Preview a comment in a thread where this happens, the original post reappears in full.

When I attempt to access the front page, the status bar rapidly alternates between the standard "Start downloading from www.metafilter.com" and the words "startpage.ms". The first time this happened, I got one of those "Would you like to set your homepage...." java prompts. I selected no. Subsequent times, the prompt has not appeared, but after the status bar message flickers, the browser crashes.
