If you - the stealthy MetaTalk keyboard-katana weilding warrior - feel the need to snark and bitch at me instead, feel free to vent. But point it this way, m'kay? I'll only find it amusing, and curses make get me all hot and bothered. You should also probably know I'm naked right now.

Otherwise consider this a gesture of good will and useful information gathering for those that can really use it right now. I too have used my AskMe question this week.

Clearly, the solution to every closed thread is to start a new one. Do it enough times and eventually they'll have to give in!

Brendan Loy has a good list of resources on his sidebar, as well.

Why, how nicely you ask. Have you seen the Wikipedia page and its list of External links and sources?

Katrina Check-In - people looking for others can post, and people that are OK can post - all organized by location.

Are we sure this won't simply be scraped for some asshole's ugly news blog?

Is Katrina Check-In actually working? It seems to be down.
posted by milovoo at 4:47 PM on August 31, 2005

Docgonzo: Eww! Good eye. I didn't even think about checking his profile.

Uhm. Damn. What the hell do I do now? I mean, it could be a valuable resource and a good thing in general, but that site is just hideous and obviously ad-driven.

I was just trying to do a good thing. He wasn't too friendly in his own thread, but I just kind of leapt to and grasped at the hope he was just stressed out. I feel kinda icky.

*sheepishly* Uh, Matt?

Hmm . . . let's not collect the names of charitable websites because someone on the Internet might copy our list?
posted by Mid at 5:33 PM on August 31, 2005

Agreed. Someone call Google, I'm sure they can put it on their list.
posted by Plutor at 5:50 PM on August 31, 2005

Yeah, I really don't personally care who copies and archives useful information, especially in crisis situations like this. It does just seem a little odd, and will kotow to whatever decision the MeFi community or Matt makes.

I mean, sites and orgs like CNN and FOX news obviously profit hand-over-fist in times of crisis and misery, and we hardly bat an eye - and they provide even less utility most of the time, and far more panic. All while leeching from any and all sources they can get their grubby mits on.

So keep 'em coming, I guess.

Look, I don't give a tinker's damn what our charming friend does with this info -- if the four people that check his site do something with whatever is gathered here, great.

But I find it a bit hard to just roll over and do this asshat's work for him given his behaviour in the previous thread.

Everyone else, thanks!

Chill, docgonzo. No one is forcing you to contribute.

No, that's true -- but let's just recall what our friend said in the other thread:

I'm trying to help friends from New Orleans to help find shelter, family, and friends. Go fuck yourselves if you're not going to help. Hurry and finish jerking off before you're late for work at McDonald's.

You wanna do that assmunch a favour, fine; I don't believe in rewarding assholery with free labour, especially as it appears to me it's not for "friends from New Orleans" but just content for his shitty blog.
posted by docgonzo at 10:38 PM on August 31, 2005

I could frankly give a crap about his blog. If it helps any, consider this just being for MetaFilter and NOLA.

It's entirely possible that A) he has a scummy for-profit strip-mining adblog, B) he's not normally an asshole, but given the stress and the piles of shit thrown at him, he blew up and C) despite operating what might be a for-profit adblog, he might actually be trying to help people.

All of the above could also be totally false, and having a thread full of resources could still be helpful to Mefites and others without him using a single link.

Chill out. Please stop pooping in my thread. We're not clueless. I'm pretty sure anyone that makes it to MetaTalk is probably aware that their efforts of posting a link or two could be used by someone else without their permission. It's the internet. Chill, man. Chill.

You're putting a sour taste into my mouth, and even possibly scaring off folks that would like to contribute. It's benign. It's not like we're conducting extensive marketing research for a baby-eating experimental drug research consortium that supports slash and burn rainforest farming and also happens to make landmines and nuclear weapons and runs a payday loan and rent to own furniture chain or something. Chill.

FWIW, this is my flickr set. I'm adding pictures daily. My brother in law just escaped the gulf coast and he has a digital camera full of pictures of the devastation. I've got to get a card reader at the store today, but I should have those pictures up later tonight or tomorrow.

Sorry about all the "cute baby" pictures.

In all seriousness... I apologize for my remarks yesterday.

I have been placed in charge of helping college students misplaced by Katrina to find a university for the next year... that is why I needed the lists of blogs...

Secondly... and not to be taken as serious... I kinda like my 'crappy news blog' ... I would rather have it than some page that doesn't exist (docgonzo) or some totally rad photo page whose hits can't keep up with mine.... thnx.

don't apologize or let it get to you, bama--keep on doing what you need to. And thanks. : >

Question: I went to the main Red Cross page to donate today and clicking on the 'Donate' button causes Firefox to slap up a security warning: domain name mismatch on the cert. I donated yesterday using the same laptop and this didn't happen. I have no illusions that somebody would try to hijack the donations page, but could they? Is this just my browser acting up? Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this.
