You're a fine-looking bunch. Great photography, too. We need to get y'all out to the East Coast to take flattering portraits of us, too.

Triode's photos are now online. Including the infamous (ahem) beer photo-shooting technique.

Heh. That last Triode photo is awesome.
And that's pretty much how DaShiv looked the entire evening.

I added my DaShiv technique shot after I remembered about my other memory card, too. I'm glad the flash got some use, I'm always happy to do available light. :) I *did* get my 20mm f1.8 today, a day too late.. ah, well. Good times.

(as for the shoutouts, my apologies, they are in focus and the faces are not for the most part.. no depth of field shooting wide open :) )

kcm, I usually get around that by giving the focus ring a small twist to put the focal plane somewhere between the shoutout and the subject's face if the two are close enough together, so that I take advantage of the DOF on both sides of the focal plane. Alternately: the 85/1.2 I was using gives beautiful backgrounds but virtually no workable DOF, so for this photo with erisfree I asked her to hold the paper closer to her chest. Although due to being a drunken boor at the time, I may have used a different word in my instructions -- I've forgotten exactly what I said...
She didn't slap me, in any case.

yeah, I was being pretty passive all around out of sheer lack of energy so I just shot people as it came .. and from what I hear out of her own mouth she only slaps people she "likes", IYKWIM.

How fun! My former roommate grew up in the Sunset and Yancy's was (still is) the hangout for his group. I've sat at that very table many times. Cheers BayFis. Someday (not too) soon.

How come West Coast meetup pictures always look to me like they were taken in such well-lit spaces?

Fancy camera equipment and the fact that many of the meet-ups have taken place in well-lit spaces (at least by bar standards) or outdoors.

I'm hoping pictures of me from the upcoming BMD meetup will look good for the opposite reason: dim lighting and shaky camera work. We should know after this weekend.

Well I wasn't there but my friend Suzanne (bottom left), who moved to SF all of 3 weeks ago, said you were nice folk and she had a good time.... except for someone who ribbed her about being a lurker/party crasher :) I paypal-ed her $6 so she can join up and avoid future ribbing.
If she fails to do so I give my hearty endorsement for future harassment. Don't be T, Suz.

Great turnout! No complaints from me about the lighting this time since kcm was kind enough to allow me to monopolize his flash the entire time, so a big thanks to him for making my photos possible. I was taking my candid portraits the whole night; for shoutouts and other candids, see kcm's and caitlinb's photos. Triode's photos should be forthcoming.
Anyone on the market for a new MeFi crush? According to caitlinb, she'd like to organize the next SF meetup sometime around Valentine's, and we hope to see you all there as well.
Thanks to everyone for a great time!
Confidential to ambrosia and purplefiber: yes, I'm a sadistic bastard for unscrupulously taking utterly unguarded candids of people eating and drinking. (See also.) Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.
