We'll be convening around 8 p.m. (although I myself won't get there until 10 p.m.)

The Beer Garden is outdoors, so's you can smoke and drink at the same time. A rarity in NYC. Come celebrate my impending unemployment.

Also, I can actually come. So attend or stay away as that influences you.
posted by dame at 8:23 AM on April 14, 2006

And it is easily accessible by the N/W train.

I'd love to join you all but the taxi ride home would be long and very, very expensive.

No can do... the lady and I will be out on cursed Long Island, celebrating various Easter related events.

Bummer, yet another one I have to miss. (This time because I'll be at the family house in the boondocks of NJ.)

I'll show. Ironically, the brand new beau lives around the corner and I thought my first trip to Astoria would be to visit him, but he's out of town this weekend. You guys will do, though.
posted by CunningLinguist at 9:24 AM on April 14, 2006

you have a beau? what about a Luque?
posted by jonmc at 9:25 AM on April 14, 2006

I figured you'd approve if he's an Astoria man.
posted by CunningLinguist at 9:27 AM on April 14, 2006

Of course I approve, and you'll get to see me and Pips happily reunited (and mildly sozzled). As Jackie Chan said to Chris Tucker, Come back to my crib, I will show you my 'hood...

wasn't it 50 Cent?

Fuck. I always, always, ALWAYS am in NYC either the weekend before or the weekend after these meetups.

*shakes fist* Some day, NYC, some day . . .

Well, Ryvar, tell us in advance and we can have one just because you're coming. Silly.
posted by dame at 10:38 AM on April 14, 2006

aw, I would stop by but I have to be on the LES by 9ish, so y'all are starting too late for me to swing by. have fun!

Fuckin' sweet! That's like three blocks away from me. I'll be there around midnight.

I get a lot more life affirmation out of consistently (seriously, this is like the fifth time in a row) missing these things than I would making a fuss about my rather bland real-life self. It's all good, and I'm not going anywhere anytime soo-*gets flattened by a bus*

Seriously, these people love any excuse to drink. And they're fun to drink with. Do it!

what are these 'excuses to drink,' you speak of, earth creature?

Damn, I wish I were still in Astoria -- I love the Beer Garden, and I miss all you bastards. Somebody hug jonmc and pips for me (yay for happy reunions!), and raise a beer in the direction of Massachusetts.

hat, for a one-paragraph summation of my two month foray into single life in the city, see here and here.

Shit, languagehat, I didn't know you were in Mass. I'm out by Sudbury. We should do a Boston meetup sometime (after April).

I'm convalescing in the midwest. Otherwise I guess I would have had to consider going.

I am going to Brimfield in May - anyone else?

Ooo, turns out there's a reception for new members of my church after the service, and since I *am* one, I have to at least make an appearance. Will probably get there closer to.... 10:30 or 11:00. Nobody have any fun until I arrive.

I have plans at Revival tonight, which is where I think the last meetup was. It goes without saying that Alanis Morrisette would have a fit if she heard about this situation.

I was just out at Astoria Park. It's a beautiful day for a meetup.
posted by Captaintripps at 1:44 PM on April 15, 2006

Hey - An Astoria meetup. Awesome. I'll most definitely pop in at some point in the night. I have a feeling it's going to be insanely crowded considering the beautiful weather. We might want to consider flares or neon signs. Perhaps a hastily carved ice sculpture.

Oh, damn. I saw this last minute. I would have gone tonight!

On the subject of meetups, here are the photos from the recent *largest ever* Melbourne meetup, including shoutouts.

Hmm, asok, you probably want to make a new post with those pictures, so people will see them.

Don't know too much about flickr, but here's some photos of the meetup. I might clean it up when I'm a little less -- well, wasted.

*crashes* What a bizarre meetup.

Umm, yea. The cheeseburger was good, though.

I've gone through the pictures and identified everyone at least once.

So I dragged my ass all the way to Queens and ran into a 45 minute line outside the joint and promptly dragged my ass back home. What a glamorous, exciting Saturday night: riding the N train. Looks like you guys had fun though. /grump

Thanks—and I'm proud to be in such distinguished company!

CunningLinguist: Damn, that's a shame. I hope you brought something good to read on the train...

Thanks for the fun time, folks. Kielbasa should be served at all meetups from now on.
posted by Gamblor at 8:09 AM on April 16, 2006

I missed the kielbasa and the shoutouts just to go talk to some people at another table for 40 minutes. Next time I promise to give extra shoutouts.

jon, I'm not sure how I'm paying for that pickled egg...but I know I'm going to be paying for it somehow.

Things I learned at Metafilter Meetup Queens:

1) my username apparently means I'm gay

2) jonmc can drink for twelve hours straight and still do a fine job as peacemaker

3) walking around the beergarden screaming 'metafilter!' is not a good way to find anybody, really

4) the best way to exit any altercation, "I'm sorry I said I was gonna kick your ass, but I did, and I would." (breezeway)

I was sitting right there (right in the middle at the beginning, actually!), and it was RIDICULOUS, afroblanco. You don't even want to know. Somebody came to the party with their "Jerk" hat on. Whatever.

details!
posted by andrew cooke at 11:13 AM on April 16, 2006

Heh. I essentially got trolled. A complete stranger was randomly and purposefully antagonistic for no real reason, and I went full-tilt into what's-your-fucking-problem mode. It didn't help that I was also determined to make it utterly clear that he was an asshole of goatse-esque proportions.

I overreacted because of my own insecurities and memories of childhood bullying, and he was just a general shitcock who probably had some issues going on as well. And we were both drunk.

So, that's that. Stupid thing. Sorry if I caused any undue stress at what was otherwise a really fun evening.
posted by icosahedral at 11:36 AM on April 16, 2006

Thank god you didn't bring handbags.
posted by jonmc at 12:00 PM on April 16, 2006

Yea, that's what happened (said the person who was sitting right there when it all started). I hope meetup noobs don't think that sort of thing goes on at all meetups; it most certainly does not.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 1:01 PM on April 16, 2006 [1 favorite]

Don't lie to them, pinky. Remember the last meetup when gaspode leaped across the table and cut my throat with an oyster knife? You have no idea what its like to attend meetups as a disembodied soul.

Shut up, bitch, or I'll kill you.
