I stumbled across "...Free, Easy Instant Discussion Space...." at www.quicktopic.com (sorry, can't get link to work) Seems anyone can instantly set-up Metafilter-like community blogs/boards. Are there many others like it out there ? Is this good or bad for Metafilter?

Lots of bloggers used it before comment-addons like dotcomments, the late blogvoices, or reblogger became available. There are also Phil Greenspun's Lusenet and any number of mailing-list managers from topica to Yahoo Groups.

Is this good or bad for Metafilter?

I noticed clouds in the sky the other day. Is this good or bad for Metafilter?

it doesn't have any effect on MetaFilter

Metafilter was exposed to gamma rays at a young age, it is invincible.

Just don't get it angry. You wouldn't like it when it's angry.

....I recall back when I was just a mere sprat, and there was a great ruckus out on the moors. The womenfolk would keep we young'uns locked up in the cottage, and the men would take up their rifles and go afield. Some never came back, and each night we'd hear the baleful howls in the night, freezing our blood in our veins, you know. I asked me pa about it years later and he said, "'Twas the Metafilter out on the moors those nights, a'hunting the county bloggers and feeding on their trollery..."

It still gives me the chills to think about it, and remember those howls of anguish and delight as, in my minds eye, I imagine the 'filter, giving chase across the barrens under the light of the harvest moon and tearing into a poor flamer...
