Now.. What part of the city?

West Philly? Center City? Anywhere but old city, please?

Standard Tap? Bob and Barb's? Copa?
posted by Blazecock Pileon at 1:31 PM on January 22, 2007

As noted in the thread, I vote Dalak or Abysinnia. Not an expensive dinner, still fun for the non-alcohol drinkers, and it allows god particle to follow my advice to get to know his own neighborhood first.

lunachic, I defer to you on West Philly, though -- any other good options?

(I do like the idea of luring the newlyweds back into the wilds of West Philly, sans mugging and window-breakage this time. Knock wood.)

Anyone up for boozing afterwards could head to South Philly Taproom, conveniently located for onedarkride, splatta, me, others. (kalimac? Are you listening?) I'm always up for Bob & Barbara's, too.

Watch out, desuetude: mere proximity to us may get you raped by mutant ninja bike thieves armed with shuriken made of broken glass!

I second Abyssinia or Dahlak - cheap communal food-bonding and good West Philly atmosphere for god particle, if he'll come. He seems new to MeFi - I hope we can lure him in here.

abysinnia sounds good... and i can walk to dahlak! nice atmosphere in both.. (and theres also an upstairs bar over abysinnia with (a tiny bit more) selection.. though more cramped space-wise. also there's better luck with parking than probably anywhere else. ..if all else fails, just park at the cvs around the corner. just please... god please... no south st!

As long as you are said mutant ninja bike thief, that'll be fine. [bats eyelashes] be gentle?

That sounds hot. Plus, miagaille will end up with a bike. A+++ WOULD ABSCOND WITH AGAIN!!!!

People have to be made to drink lager? Who are these people, nuns?

abysinnia it is!

boozing: i vote taproom.

Someone page god particle and tell him his presence is required.
posted by desuetude at 6:25 PM on January 22, 2007

it might be worth mentioning that i'm not yet of legal drinking age, and i don't live in philly yet, but i do live just outside. i'll see what i can do.

God, I love Abyssinia. When?
posted by graymouser at 6:14 AM on January 23, 2007

god particle: how old are you? you should at least come for the food.

what part of the outside do you live in?
posted by onedarkride at 6:55 AM on January 23, 2007

god particle, we've got some non-drinkers in the group anyway...don't sweat the age thing. (Um, you're old enough to have a driver's license, right?)

When is a good question. When?

Weeknights are better for me, but I bet they're not for everyone else. In case we can't get it together in the next week, note that Feb 3-6 I'll be out of town.
posted by desuetude at 7:47 AM on January 23, 2007

I'll try and make it to this outing as well. Just let me know details and I'll make the drive into the city.
posted by galimatias at 9:40 AM on January 23, 2007

be gentle?

Mmmmm... maybe we need a safe word... like, "Help! Police!"
posted by miagaille at 9:52 AM on January 23, 2007

Weeknights are also better for me & dmd. I'd also kind of like to avoid a Friday/Saturday affair, so that crowds/noise/traffic will be lower.

What about a Thursday? It's like the poor man's Friday. So... 1/25 or 2/2? (Just making suggestions. We're pretty good most evenings.)

god particle: If transportation is a problem for you, can you take SEPTA? I commute via the R5 to University City every day. That might mitigate parking woes.
posted by miagaille at 10:04 AM on January 23, 2007

Oh yeah, and does anyone have a good approach to mefi-meetup recruitment etiquette? I know there are a whole bunch of mefites who have attended or expressed interest in past meetups - I'm always worried that they'd want to come but missed the MeTa threads...
posted by miagaille at 10:08 AM on January 23, 2007

Thursday nights work for me! I'm still pretty new to the area, and couldn't make the last mefi-meetup. miagaille, you mentioned taking septa...I'm on the R7 line. Could I transfer to the R5 and then walk to the restaurant from the nearest stop?

Mmmmm... maybe we need a safe word... like, "Help! Police!"

I'd appeal to your husband for protection, but he'll be too excited by the girl-on-girl action. Sigh.

Thursdays are actually very good for me. Miagaille, go forth and e-mail the other Philly MeFites, I say.
posted by desuetude at 11:11 AM on January 23, 2007

lagreen: I take the R5 just to 30th Street, so you'd do the same on the R7. From 30th I take the trolley/bus/walk to UCity.

So you'd take the R7 to 30th St Station, then from there I think the simplest way to get to Abyssinia (if it's too cold/far to walk) would be the El to 46th & Market. Abyssinia is at 45th & Locust, about 3 blocks from there.

I'm 18; I live maybe 20-30 min from the city (by train)
posted by god particle at 11:42 AM on January 23, 2007

im ok with thursdays too.
posted by lunachic at 2:04 PM on January 23, 2007

I want to come! Can I get a cab home from Abyssina, though?
posted by footnote at 2:31 PM on January 23, 2007

Thurdays should work for me as long as the time is later (2/1 or 2/8). I work in Conshohocken, so I'll have to fight traffic on the Sch . . . umm, I-76. Been here a year and I've already given up on trying to pronounce or spell the name of that stupid river/highway. . .

galimatias: "Been here a year and I've already given up on trying to pronounce or spell the name of that stupid river/highway. . ."

Neither does google: "Did you mean: churchill"
posted by 31d1 at 3:51 PM on January 23, 2007

Of course, it would help if after 25 years living here, I knew how to spell it.
posted by 31d1 at 3:53 PM on January 23, 2007

Okay, so let's say Thursday, 2/1, at Abyssinia. Is 7pm too early for people who are coming in from the suburbs?
posted by miagaille at 4:02 PM on January 23, 2007

galimatias: If you say school-kill you're close enough.

Note to any Philly-area lurkers worried about the dining choice: Ethopian food accomodates vegetarians, carnivores, timid eaters, and not-timid eaters.

everytime i see "taproom" i see "tampon" and wonder what kind of bar names itself tampon......

alas, we will have a guest in town on 2/1 and i wouldn't want to impose a meetup of crazies mefites on her.

but have fun!

Penciling it in...
posted by youarenothere at 11:46 AM on January 24, 2007

2/1 is no good for me. i have some folks at work tomorrow coming from japan and wherever the other dude is from that i have to help out. they're workaholics or haven't adjusted for timezone differences.

galimatias: i work in radnor, and i take 476 south to 95 north. yeah, it's a few more miles, but it takes less time, the stress level is lower, and the odds of going from 70 to 0 in a second is infinitely less.

footnote: easily, but the train would be cheaper.
posted by onedarkride at 3:38 PM on January 24, 2007

Is 2/8 better for people [misanthropicsarah, onedarkride]?

I just made up 2/1 cause there was some slack lying around and no one was picking it up... we can be flexible here!
posted by miagaille at 4:12 PM on January 24, 2007

radnor? what do you do there?
posted by god particle at 5:38 PM on January 24, 2007

The 8th is better for me. I'll try my best to make it at 7:00 depending on if I can wrap up at work and brave the traffic.
posted by galimatias at 6:49 PM on January 24, 2007

misanthopicsarah will be out of town on 2/8, so that is not good for us. :( (She'll be back in the Homeland from 2/6-2/10.)
posted by monochromaticgirl at 9:06 PM on January 24, 2007

Either is fine for me.
posted by desuetude at 6:05 AM on January 25, 2007

go for the 8th if it's better for y'all. don't want to hold it up on account of me!
posted by misanthropicsarah at 9:42 AM on January 29, 2007

So...the eighth, then? Can we have a round of confirmation? Preferably a rousing one?
posted by youarenothere at 10:38 AM on January 29, 2007

The eighth works for me--I'll be there!
posted by lagreen at 12:20 PM on January 29, 2007
